1t tl V 3 () XIxc htxlt) stetou ASTORIA. OREOON- SATURITAY NOVEMBER IS, 182 J. F. HALLORA.V. Editor Inspector Hoi.co.mk, in his re port to the general land office, gives an interesting account of the establishment of the land office at Huron, Dakota. October Oth. Monday, was set for the office to open, and at 3 o'clock that morn ing over oOO attorneys assembled in front of the office in order to be ready for business at 9 o'clock when the doors opened. Then there was such a rtHi that the doors and windows were broken and several fights occurred in their eagerness to fde applica tions first. The receiver was com pelled to make the announcement that all applications would be re garded as having been filed simul taneously. Nine thousand dol lars worth of land was sold for cash the first day. One hundred thousand acres were entered, and that was the largest day's work ever done at anj' land office in this countrj-. With tear-bedimmed iyes, Ftvys the Idaho Democrat, and heait bowed down with sorrow we bow to the inevitable. We, in common with five or six other old toucrhs j have been laboring under a fear ful nightmare of delusion. In a word, the free and enlightened people of the territory have de cided by a majority of a thousand or twelve hundred that they wish north daho annexed to Washing ton Territory. Mr. Singiser made the campaign on that issue and won. The question has been fairly before the people and ear nestly and ably discussed. The final result is overwhelmingly in favor of annexation. Xini: years ago Lincoln count3r, Nevada, sowed the wind and now it is reaping the wirlwind. Seized upon by a set of vampires whose bloodthirstiness excelled that of Tweed ring in their maddest da3', the town of Pioche was "run1' by them as a means of private en richmentj and tl count' saddled with an enormous debt that falls due next January. There is not a dollar in the treasury to meet the demands of the creditors, and the Pioche Record jocularly ask: "Why should wc not be happy?1 The annual exhibition of the Cotnstock mines was announced to open on the 12th for two days only. Admittance free. Those who go in, says the Bulletin, will not be the only ones taken in dur ing the 3'car. Xow that election is over, an cfibit will be made to enthuse a little life into Comstoek. mining securities, and the opening of certain mines to the public is presumably in that interest. Tin: defeat of Page, of Califor nia, for congress, is a loss to us of Oregon. He was chairman of the committee on commerce, of which George is a member, and always worked in unison with improve ment and substantial aid. It was ingratitude in his constituents to defeat him, for he had done more for his district than twenty such legal sprigs as the one elected could hope to compass. xV statkmext of the treasury department shows that the annual interest charge is $1.09 per head for all persons in the United States. In 1SG it was at its highest, being 4.21) per person. In the following year it was 4.1 2; a year later 3.4S, gradually les sening until 1S71 it touched 3 per head. Now it has fallen to $1.09 and will soon go belo'.v that. The December number of the North American Review is to con tain two symposiums, one on the Health of American "Women, by Dr. James R. Chad wick, .Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Dr. Dio Lewis; and the other on Suc cess on the Stage, by John Mc Cullough, Madame Modjeska, Jo seph Jefferson, Lawrence Barrett, Maggie Mitchell and William "Warren. The clerks sent out to the Pacific coast by the Indian oflice to award Indian supplies have purchased supplies to the weight of 480,872 pounds, costing over 75,000, being an increase over -the last purchase, in weight, of 04,472 pounds. They icport that supplies in Washington territory cost ten per cent less than on any otber prt of the coast. The agent ot the Flathead In dian agency, Montana, has tele- graphed to Washington that nearly 8,000 laborers and camp followers, the advance "guard of the North ern Pacific R. R., have arrived at the reservation, and asks military l assistance to keep the ste: cheepers i from selhng whisky to the In- dians. i rr-7r-. t- .foiix Shehmax, havinir asked.
