A correspoxdcxt of the Bulle tin who has been traveling in Ore gon and "Washington Territory, speaking of the increased facilities for communication, says: "Since the management of the Northern Pacific passed into the hands of the Villard combination the travel and traffic between Portland3jPnget Sound and Victoria via rail lias very matciially increased. This is due largely to the increased ac commodations offered travelers on the Sound and across to Victoria. The steamer makes three trips per week now between Tacoma and Victoria, while previously she made only one. Between all ports on the Sound, daily trips are made. You will recollect, no doubt, that Villard bought these steamers a year or two ago from Captain Starr. In fact there is very little in this part of the country in the way of transporta tion business that is not owned 13 the Villard interest. It is quite as omnipresent here as is the Stan ford combination in California but far more popular, or rather far less unpopular. This doubtless arises from the fact that the' are continu ally making improvements, antici pating the wants of trade, devel oping the country in all directions, offering their land at extremely low prices to actual scttleis, .spend ing vast sums of money, luring every laborer who is willing to work and paying him good wages for his services, purchasing largely from local traders and merchants in a word, they are cveiybody's customer. Everybody is busy, is making money, is therefore happy, and consequently not disposed to growl. But when all these im provements are completed; when, instead of being a money spender, they become a money gatherer, in stead of a customer a competitor, instead of bringing mone from New York to Oregon they take it from Oregon to New York, then I imagine Mr. Villatdand his asso ciates will fully realize that the public is unreasonable, and grate ful only for favors to be received, and that they will be no more popular in Oregon than Lcland Stanford and his associates arc in California." The "Tidal W:nc." A Nevt York despatch says: The extent of the Democratic victory is not yet told. Cleveland' j majority in the state will leacii the enormous total of a hundred and ninety thousand, utterly unprece dented in the history of the coun try. Counties that never went Democratic since the Republican patty was otgunied, now have gone heavily for Cleveland. J?ut there is something behind this, for notwithstanding Cle eland's great majority he has not ieceived so many polls as Hancock had in 18S0, when the latter was beaten by 21,000. The fact is, Republi cans either stayed at home or voted for Cleveland. The rebuke to the administration is every where considered complete and terrible. In the 38 th congress the JJcmo crats will control the house of representatives by a majority of 71, the figures being, Republicans 227, Democrats 19S. The state will be represented in the next congress by 21 Democrats and 13 Republicans, a Democratic gain of 8. The assembly will consist of 85 Democrats and 43 Republicans, thus giving the Democrats a ma jority of 42 in the lower house. The senate stands 17 Democrats to 17 Republicans. Tue Liverpool Shipping Tolc graph, referring to the supposed line of stenraers between San Francisco and Liverpool, bays: "A steamship line will slmrtly ply between San Francisco and this 'port, and it is fully expected that it will divert some of the traffic of the Southern Pacific. One iron steamer of 3800 tons, destined for this service, has already been launched at Middlesborouffh, and another is being built. The line ia backed by an English syndicate representing a million sterling. The London Saturday Review compresses a volume into a sino-le Jint where speaking of England, it aajs, "We owe our free trade to The Planter's company have been holding the annual meeting in Honolulu. The have made arrangements conjointly with the government to introduce a large number of immigrants. About 3,000 Japanese are expected in the next twelve months; also 2,- 000 Portuguese and j,000 Ger-I mans. The government pays the I passage of women and child: en. i At the present rate of importation . the custom receipts will be fully ( 500,000 a year. The exports' from the kingdom during the twelve months ended Sept. oO last, were a little over 17,000,000 a larger export in proportion to the population than that of a 113 conn-; try in the woild. The incoming sugar crop is now estimated at 150,000,000 pounds. ItOKX 111 .sioria. jov. inn. l&xi. 10 me v in 1 of 15. F. blevens, a son.
