Haas, of Salem, hilled him self, i:st Frday evening, preferring death to yielding "to the temptation to drink. .1. 11. Mitchell, smiling and deb onair, was among the outward bound passengers on the Queen of the Pacific yesterday. J. M. Spencer, an employe of the O. R. 4t X. Co., fell from a gangway on the Queen of the Pacific, last Fri day, and was fatally injured. Those rookeries at the" southeast corner of Main and Cheuamus street arc to be torn down, and handsome brick buildings erected by Cant. Flavel. The great tides of the last forty eight hours have brought down at the obb an unusual quantity of drift wood which floats in immense masses in the channel. From Rand, McNally and Co., Chicago, Ills., we are in receipt of an indexed county and township map of Oregon, which is in convenient shape, and well gotton up. The Astoria arrived up from the forts yesterday on time. The Canby will receive a thorough overhauling, and until such time as she is com pleted the Astoria will take her place. The rain came down yesterday in a perpendicular and business-like manner, and any danger of combus tion, spontaneous or otherwise was reduced to the lowest maximum of probability. Dr. Jno. A. Child, of Portland,is at the Occident. lie is making official visits to the several lodges of A. 0. U. W., of which he is G. M., for this northwest coast, lie will, in his olficial capacity, visit the lodges at this place during the week. A pleasant social gathering at Pythian Hall last Friday evening in augurated a series of entertainments that will be a desirable feature of As toria society this winter. It is a step in the right direction, and will doubt less be successfully kept up. In the list of tax payers in yesterday's issue, "M. Wright" should read Megler fc Wright; Wetherbeo & Thome's assessment should be $7,000, instead of $43,817; West Packing Co., $11,300, instead of $7, 000, and John West, $43,817 instead cf 611,300. Our Cape Hancock correspondent writes: "Game is coining in plenti fully from Shoalwatcr bay; one man brought in 250 pounds of geese and ducks to-day to Ilwaco. The sloop Mary H was driven ashore on the Il waco beech yesterday during a blow and was considerably damaged. There is a heavy surf on Chinook and a break across Sand island."' The land department of the O. & C. Railroad company, wliich corpora tion has claimed the imaginary title to "The Astoria Land Grant' has no tified its agent at this place that hav ing concluded to discontinue the exe cution of contracts for the sale of the unearned lands, no more such con tracts will be made. Hall on Friday evening October 27ih, many of the best citi zens of Astoria enrolling themselves as members. A constitution and by laws were adopted and the following officers elected: President. F. D. Wiuton; vice-presidents Mrs. I. E. Parker, C. A. Hansen, G. T. Parker: secretary, J. R. Coon; treasurer, Mrs. E. McGregor; councilors -J. Mc Cormac, E. Goodall, Miss Carrie Field: doorkeeper, S. M. Cole.f Miss Emma H olden read a selection which was evidently appreciated. The following resolution was chosen for debate at the next meeting. Re solved, "That labor unions tend to anarchy." .!. McCormac assisted by Mrs. I. E. Parker, will aflirm. and C. A. Hansen assisted by X. E. Goodall, will argue on the negative. Miss Carrie Field and Mr. G. F. Parker were appointed to furnish se lections for the next 'evening's enter tainment. The society is already a success, and the next meeting will he held at the same place next Friday evening at 8 o'clock. Mr.Mr.r.i:. A Good Number. The North American Review for November presents an unusually di versified table of contents. ' English views of Free Trade' by the Hon. John Welsh, of Philadelphia, is a clear and forcible exposition of the difference between the economic situation of England and that of the United States, and of the considera tions which make free trade impera tive for the former count jy, if she would retain her present position as the world's workshop. Joseph Neil son, chief judge of the Rrooklyn city court, writes of "'Disorder in Court Rooms," a subject of profound inter est to good citizens at all times, and moie especially now in view of cer tain recent occurrences. The obiter dicta of the learned author touching the Guiteau trial and the Lawson Gray incident at Dublin,are character ized by the best judicial temper. Dr. Wm. A. Hammond, cx-sui;geon-gcncral of the United Stales Army, offers ,rA Problem for Sociologists, the problem 'Jieing to determine the degree of responsibility before the criminal law, of persons affected by certain forms of insanity. "The In dustrial Value cf Woman," by Mrs. Julia Ward Howe, is a very able reply to an article recently published on "Woman's Work and Woman's Wages."' "Advantages of the Jury System' by Dwight Foster, formerly a Justice of the Massachusetts su preme court, will command the atten tion of every thoughtful citizAi, be ing a grave and learned defense of an institution that it is becoming :he fashion to belittle and decry. The remaining articles arc, "Safety in Theaters," by Steele Mackaye, the dis tinguished actor and theatrical mana ger; "ilie JTctcnsions 01 Journal ism," by Rev. Geo. T. Rider; and a symposium on suppression 01 ice, by Anthony Comslock, 0. P.. Froth- ingham and Rev. J. in. Luckley. On the 27th insl., a young man named James Kelley, who was log ging near John Day's river, while crossing that stream in a skiff, lost his balaucc and fell out of the boat, being almost instantly drowned. An inquest was held at the coroner's rooms last evening, from where the funeral will take place at two o'clock, lo-day. Senator Canficld, who has been in public life in Illinois for nearly Jt quarter of a century, and who dropped in yesterday on his way home from a protracted visit in this section of the union, says we may look for a large immigration in the spring; that "folks back there don't realize what a country this is till they comeandseeit.' There's plenty room here for half a million from the Mississippi valley. Dr. Pierce's "Golden Medical Dis covery" has become so thoroughly es tablished in public favor that were it not for the forgetfulncss of people it would not be necessary to call atten tion to its power to cure consumption, which is scrofula of the lungs, and other blood diseases, as eruptions, blotches, pimples, ulcers, and "liver complaint." Wiley I. Allen, the popular music dealer of Portland, is in the city. Mr. Allen has by far the largest stock of sheet music on the northwest coast, and has built up a line trade in the me tropolis. All orders by mail filled promptly. Carl Adler arrived from San Francisco vesterdav with the largest and finest stock of uood ever brought to Astoria. Will begin opening tomorrow. Old Times. On yesterday's steamer there was a large party of Catholic clergymen and sisters of charity, who have come to Oregon to establish schools and churches. C. E. Pickett, in a book boon to bo published, gives some reminiscences of the arrival of Catho lic missionaries in Oregon 111 early days, lie says: "In July, 1S41, I was stopping with two old friends at Astoria Colo nel 31 cClure, who had taken up a G10 acre pre-emption claim (the Oregon pioneer allotment), on which the lower and main portion of that town is built, and' J. M. Shively, pru-emptor of the adjoining claim fronting the river above, including the bite of Astor's trading post, called by the Hudson Ray company, Fort Geurgo, after the war of 1812 had caused its surrender to the Rritish. Shively still lives there, and retains, unlike nearly all the defrauded and impover ished native and pioneer Califoruians,n remnant of his poverty. Late in the afternoon of the first day of that month, Shively and I loft McCIurea's house in the bight to go to his cabin, in the forest on the up per portion of his claim. As we gok out in tho stream where the mouth of the river could be seen, we observed a vessel coming over the bar. Since neither of the semi-annual arriving Hudson Day company's vessels, nor the annual one belonging to Cushing Co. of Post on (traders to Oregon) was then due, and it being a rare event for any other ship to put into the theu solitude of that river, we concluded it to be a whaler. Know ing the dangerous nature of the en trance, we watched the vessel's course with much solicitude. The outlet over the bar was then south of whero it now is, which, after being crossed, the channel ran at right angles north toward Cape Disappointment and into Raker's bay. Rut the vessel did not thus alter its course, appearing to have come to anchor, or else steering straight toward us. Arriving at our landing, Shively set up the canoe pad dle in a line to sight whether there was any divergence, but having watched till niglitfal! without perceiv ing the least, we concluded she must be agronud, and as the sails were still set, supposed that these were being used to wear her oft" the sand spit. We slept little that night, thinking that the craft was inevitably wrecked. Rolling out of our blankets early next morning and hastily preparing and eating our breakfast of salmon, bread, potatoes and yarb tea, we started afoot orer tho hills to get the Indians at the village to go with their large canoes to the rescue of the supposed wrecked mariners. On reaching the summit, behold! there was the ship just coming to anchor in front of Fort George. Hastening down, 1 got a canoe and was the first person to go aboard. On reaching the deck 1 was met by. the captain, who introduced me to the famous Catholic missionary, Father dc Smet, who has been titled by some the "Las Casas of North America," and his reinforcement of fathers and sisters whom he had gone to Europe to fetch out. These were the first Catholic sisters to arrive on the Pacific coast. Informing the party of our solicitude regarding their un usual entrance of the river, and in quiring as to the way they got in, the captain informed that having neither chart nor pilot, after crossing the bar he steered straight on, sending a boa ahe.d to heavte the lead, and had found deep water all the way up, hav ing anchored for the night near Point Adams. Thus was discovered the south channel of the river, which was xised as the preferable one for a num ber of years." In the case of the two Chinese who recently arrhed on the Patrician, and who were arestcd in Portland, Judge Deady has decided that a per son on board of a vessel of the United States or any one of them is in con templation of law within the territory and jurisdiction of the United States and therefore a Chinese laborer who shipped on an Amcricau vessel, at London, prior to tho passage of the act aforesaid and continued on her until her arrival in the United StateB although after the expiration of the 90 daj-s next following the passago of said act, is entitled. to reside therein.
