It was one of the Roman customs when a young man was about entering a warlike cam paign, for the mother to present hitn trith a shield, with the terse remark, "This, or upon it." The interpretation of the maternal ad vice was an admonition to the de parting son to bring the shield back or be borne triumphantly to his childhood home upon it. In gathering up the slain after a battle those who were found with wounds in the hack were buried without remark; but those v. ho were slain by wounds in front were placed upon their shields as bWs, and covered with pu lands, and carried with military honors back to the paternal root with song?, and ic ceivea wiui joy y mosp sicrn om i - t i .1 - 11 Roman lHtlio.nnilmuthe. After the smoke of the contest has dis appeared, and the victors and the vanquished are rewarded what honestly belongs to them, how pleasant the memory of an honor able contest, where no word of per sonal bitterness, no unfair state ment, no low and vulgar insinua tions, no private slander and abuse had escaped the lips, or had lu-i-n used to defame the opposing party. "Whether the place had been won or lost; whether victory or defeat had been written on the brow of the contestant, the honor had not been tarnished; and the patriotic fatheis and mothers could take the hand of the conqueror or conquered and proudly claim him as their own. -Speaking of Vanderbilt's piob- able connection with Pacific coast railroad building, a New York special says that for two years past the Union Pacific has contemplated a new route to the Pacific coast and some months since began the construction of the Oregon Short Line, with the ultimate intention of extending the road to the coast. More recently arrangements have been perfected for a second line from Utah through Nevada to San Francisco. The Yanderbilt system proper consists of the most directly connected roads from New York to Chicago, with an offshoot to the Mississippi river and St. Louis. He has personal management of these roads and owns an interest in the Chicago and Northwestern and has recently purchased a con trolling interest in the Chicago Minneapolis & Omaha roads. These under the controlling inter est of Yanderbilt may very properly bo considered a portion of the New York Central system to be worked in unison from that city to Omaha and points in the northwest? The reeentacquisition of the Hannibal " and St. Joseph road, with its web system, will fairhy make connections with it. The combination of these loads with the Union Pacific is highly probable as soon as the latter road shall complete its extension to the Pacific coast, if they do not pre cede that event. "Wuat becomes of all the pins V" remains one of the great unsolved questions of the day; but the question recently jisked by a London paper, "what becomes of all the old pianos?" has been recently answered by a New York journal which goes on to show that ncaity every vessel coming across the Atlantic from Europe brings a consignment of cracked and crazy old pianos, which are doctored and varnished, and otherwise tinkered" up, and finally worked off on unsuspecting American purchasers. Alex. H. Stewiixs has been elected governor ol Georgia bv 50,000 Democratic majority. Fearful charges of cruelty come from New Tacoma, where respondent of the Oregonian says: S They e:e the sorriest looking crowd I have seen for many a day. They were thii teen or fourteen in number; of these six or eight had i blackened eyes, seven of them had scalp wounds, some quite serious and apparently of recent inflic tion. One stated that his jaw had been iracturcd by a blow from" the second mate. Three affirmed that they had their noses breken: one had a bad swelling in his neck, produced, he said, by a blou in- flicted by a bclaving pin; live or six had bruises on their arms and bands, and two or tlnce had black and blue and green blotches over the black and shoulders, and ever' man but one declared tint ! had been frequentlv beaten for lb j 1 - . ,t trivial reasons. The matter has been compromised by those in charge of the work' declaring that no more than $1.50 :i week shall be charjred. The Railway Age reports con struction of 1,009 miles during Sep tember, and the total for nine months of the present year at S,07.3 miles. It estimates the total for the year at 10,500. The amount is far greater than was ever before built in one season.
