C i ) jfe'i. lUM'Jrll'lIj . . Astoria, Oregon, Sunday Morning, October 1. 1882 No. L Vol. xvm. THE VIKINGS i These Northmen or Vikings, were not merely a far-away peo- pie with whom we have nothing! in common, but they really belong; to the selfsame race of men with' most o f ourselves. They were, perhaps, the actual ancestors to t some living Ameiicans, and kin- folk to the majority. They were ', th? haine nice who co!iauered Eng-! i land, and were known as Saxons; j then conquered France and were kuowu as Normans; and finally j ciossed over from France and con- j qucred England again. These Norse Vikings were, like most of us, Scandinavians, and so were leally closer to us in blood and in language than was the great Co lumbus. "What were the ways and man ners of these Vikings? We must remember at the outset that their name implies nothing of royalty. The; were simply the dwellers on a vik, or bay. They were, in other words, the sea-side population of the Scandinavian peninsula, the only pait of Europe which then sent foith a race of sea-rovers. They resembled in some respects the Algerine corsairs of a later period, but, unlike the Algerines, they were conquerors as well as pirates, and were ready to found settlements wherever they went. Nor were the Vikings yet Chris tians, for from the time that Chris tianity came among them they be came more peaceful. In the prime of their heathenism they were the terror of Europe. They canied their forays along the whole conti nent. They entered every port in England, and touched at every island on the Scottish coast. They j sailed up the feeine, and Charle magne, the ruler of Western Eu rope, wept at seeing their dark ships in sight of Paris. They reached the Mediterranean, and formed out of their own number the famous Varranjjian guard of the later Greek emperors the guard which is described by Walter Scott in "Count Robert of Paris." They reached Africa, which they called "Saracen's Land," and there took eichtv castles. All their booty they sent back to Norway, I and this wealth included not only what they took from enemies, but what they had from the very courts they served; for it was the prac tice at Constantinople, when an emperor died, for the Norse guard to go through the palaces and take whatever they could hold in their hands. To this day Greek and Arabic gold coins and chains are found in the houses of Norwegian peasants, and may be seen in the museums of Christiania and Co penhagen. T. If'. Higginson, in Harper's Magazine. Indian Justice. The California Argus of a recent date, says: Oregon Jack, of the Big Valley tribe of Indians, came to an untimely end by being las soed and dragged to death by Tom Benton and Little Ben, two Indians belonging to the Fall River tribe, about 20 miles west of this place. It appears that Jack was a "medicine man," and his patient died, which means death to the doctor. Forty-two well-armed Indians left here for Fall River with the intention of hanging Tom and Ben, unless they can raise and deliver to the injured parties $200 in coin and eight horses. When it was known that Iro quois had won the Derby, proud America swung the hat; and when it was. further known that his beerder Aristides Welch Esq., of Erdenheim near Philadelphia, Pa., indorsed St. Jacobs Oil as a remedy for fine stock, America admired the judgment displayed. The Use of tiie Capital I. i When General Alexander Ogie; served Somerset's ''frosty sons of thunder' m the Pennsylvania legislature, it fell to him to write, in bchalt of the Democratic members, a letter to (Jeueral Jackson, then stepping across the presidential threshold. .Such work of the scribe va a labor of love, and in submitting to tha caucus what he Ind wiitten. General Ogle said: "Gentlemen awl mein- bers of tin Democratic party, I hold in my hand a letter addressed by General Alexander Ogle to General Andrew Jackson, and T have no hesitation in saying that it is a damned able paper." The members, gathering around, agreed that ir was just the thing to make Old Hickory's heart thump with satisfaction, and all except one, a dapper little Philadelphia!), spoke words of praise. This dandy of the house, fixing his glasses and scanning the page with the critic's smirk, ventured to remark: "Par don me General, 1 do not'wish to assume to make a suggestion to so distinguished a gentleman asyour self, but 1 cannot refrain fiom saying that it is customary in the east, and 1 may say in almost all civilized countries of Europe, to write with the capital I, instead of the little li, in using the perso nal pronoun in epistolary corres pondence.' General Ogle drew down his heavy brows, piercing the dandy's marrow with the fierce shaft of scorn that shot from his eye. "Sir," he .said, beginning with a hi-s and ending with aj roar, "when I write to such ij grcat, such a towering man as General Andrew Jackson, Demo cratic President of the United! Suites. J abase myself, 1 abase myself, sir. use as small an "I" as I can put on paper; but, sir, if 1 should ever get to such a low down pitch as to have to write to such a damned little snipe as ycu, I'd use an 'I,' sir, that would fill two sheets of foolscap, so help mc God!" Philadelphia Times.. A Port Townsend despatch says: The collector of customs at this port has received advices from Washington that owing to insuffi cient appropriations, the assistant light keepers in most of the light houses ol the. Sound will be dis charged on October 1st. This in cludes the assistant at Smith's island light, an island station in habited only by the light keeper, and where it will be utterly im possible for one man to do the duty properly. A New York despatch says: It appears that during other influ ences depressing to foreign trade, it is a fact that J. and W. Selig- man have been drawing o:i London and Paris, a sufficient amount to yield between five and six hundred thousand dollars, which they have paid on account of the Panama Canal company to stockholders in the Panama Railway company, who a long time ago entered into an agreement to sell their stock to the canal company. Thcie have been riots in'several towns in upper Egypt, owing to efforts of officials to enfotcc dem onstrations of loyaity to the khe uive. Flags and devices have been torn down by the mob and Chris tians insulted and maltieated. The 30th of November will be Thanksffi vina: day. "Last winter T fell on the ice' writes W. T. Dowdall, Esq., of Pe- oni, 111., "and badly dislocated un (left shoulder, causing mc intense suffering. The first application of St. Jacobs Oil gave great relief, and with the ufce'of less than one bottle T quickly regained my form er strength." A Caid-Player'a Sermon. The synod of the Columbia is composed of the Presbyteries of Idaho, Puget Sound and Oregon. The territory of Alaska is under the care of the last named. The synod, therefore, covers the exten siver area odthc Pacific northwest. It is in geographical extent the largest synod in connection with the jrcncral assembly of the Pres- j b'tcriun church in the United States. It will convene next Tuesday evening in the First Pres byteiian church in Portland. qim) Stoneman, Democratic candidate for imvernor of Califor- i.i - t i . :i .. nia, nas resigiicii nisanuv ii-jmuuh. The resignntiou was accepted last Friday. His letter of resignation was received at the department sonic time ago, but Secretary Lin coln hesitated about accepting and consulted with the pi evident. Stoneman insisted on resigning and the president then accepted the resignation. Upon the reassembling of the committee of investigation as to the alleged attempt of Robt. Ford to bribe 13. F. Nichols, of Wasco, Ford was examined and said that in his conversation with Nichols he was "only joking" in relation lo the 8,000. The Willamette is a many spelled river, and no spelling of it gives general satisfaction but that above.. The last spell at the name is found in the October Harper, where it is jriven as Wahlamet. Army officers and civil employes of the war department are forbid den to make public any informa tion relative to tiie business of the department. The First National bank of Se attle lias hcpn organized, and will be ready for 'business about the 1st of November. A Varied Performance.
