The secretary announced the
application of Judge Suspender
Taylor, of Macon, Ga., and the
Rev. Callforth Davis of Bristoe
Station, Ya. Both are eminent
members of high colored society,
and have been known to put on
four clean shirts per week.
"Am dar any candy dales fur de

as a shiver of awe ran down one
side of the hall and up the other,
and set Giveadam Joiie.-s to feel
ing for a quinine pill.
The secretary announced the
names of Commodore Staff and
lion. Holdback Johnson, and ad
ded that the' "were waiting in the
ante-room -to be initiated. The
officers donned their regalia, the
the Most High Reception Commit
tee proceeded to the ante-room,
and the candidates were brought in
and put through the usual exer
cises. Although warned in ad
vance by the janitor that they
need not fear for their lives, the
judge fainted dead awaT during
the tolling of the funeral bell, and
the Rev. Davis became so excited
while in the hands of the junior
warden that the rattle of his teeth
was heard on the street below,
and was supposed b' the police to
be a trial of some sort of wart
removing machinery run by hand
power. .
The 34Gth degree is the Inchest
on which the Line-Kiln Club
works, and the meeting opens on
that degree only four times a year.
J)uring the last three years only
twelve candidates presented them
selves to travel the dangerous road,
and out of this number three were
rejected on acfTount of a squint in
the eye. The successful candidate
for the 140th must have a record
as pure as snow and a character
which would make him scorn a
congressional nomination. DeWoil

The Story of Mrs. Boddy.
Among the sins of omission'that
the last congress is guilty of is
their treatment of Mrs. Boddy's
claim. She emigrated from Kew
Zealand with her husband and
family and settled in Oregon.
The' were in good circumstances,
cultivating a farm and keeping a
store well stocked with goods.
The' were involved in the massa
cres perpetrated hy the Modocs.
While her husband and son-in-law
were out cutting firewood they
were shot down, and her firstj
warning of danger was the horses
galloping. into the yard with the
empty wagon. Herself and daugh
ter crawled on their hands and
knees and hid in the tall grass for
days until the troops under Gen.
Canby arrived. The stores and
houses were pillaged and burned,
and everything belonging to them
destroyed, and besides $S00 in
gold taken. After the capture of
the Indians the money and guns

Broken in health, penniless, disap
pointed and homesick, the unfor
tunate woman now lies ill in one
of the free wards of Providence
lTospital, and she owes that much
consideration to the kind interest
in her behalf of an army officer.
The Minister Ceased to Wonder.
Apropos of the Egyptian trouble,
we wish to relate a little story,
the circumstances of which occur
red during our trip to the Holy
Land several years or more ago.
lie was a devout Christian, and
had made the studv of the Bible!
and a proper understanding of the
Big Book the highest aim in life.
When he arrived at the Sea of
Galilee his heart was filled with
awe, and lie kilt enervated and
cleaused by the throught that he
was gazing on the very spot where
his Savior once stood.
Approaching the boatman, he
addiessed him in his choisest
Arabic, and with Bible and
commentary in hand awaited an
answer.
"Ah! what 'smatter 'th yer?
Why don't yer talk United
States?" asked the man con
temptuously. He was a real live
Yankee who was picking up a
living by ferrying tourists across
the sea.
"So this is the Sea of Galilee,"
devoutly murmured the searcher
after knowledge.
"Ya-n-s."
"And this is where our Savior
walked upon the waters?"
"Ya-a-s."
"How much wi!l3'ou charge to
take me to the exact spot?'
"Wa-al, you look like a cleigy
man, an' I won't charge you
nothinV
The devout one boarded the
boat, and at last was pointed out
where the miracle is said to have
occurred. After ga.ina: at the
waters, and dividing his time be
tween glances at his book and de
vout ejaculations of satisfaction,
the searcher signil'cd his willing
ness to return.
"Charge you '20 to t.'rko you
back," said the speculative
Yankee.
"But you said you would charge
nothing"'
"Naw, didn't. Nothing to
bring you out. Twcnlv to get
back.""
"And do you charge everybody
$20 to take them back?" asked the
astonished searcher.
"Ya-a-s. That's abcout the
figger."
"Well, then," said the devout
one, as he went down into his
clothes, "no wonder our Savior got
out and walked." JV. Y. Dis
patch. The Concord School of Philoso
phy has again adjourned without
explaining the difference between
the "herencss of the there" and
the "wherefore of the thusness,"
or showing why the whencity of the
henceforthness is not identical
with the neverthelessncss of the
