Politics In the Abstract. Ah tlie time draws near for the convening of the Legislature the senatorial fight becomes more interesting: to the1 contestants. The candidates are rnumereus: , first, of course comes .1. H. Mitchell: then come Judge Boise, AY. Lair Hill, W. D. Hare, Geo. H. "Williams, and two or three others who hope to figure as a dark horse. Mitchell seems to have his forces in the best training; yet it is claimed by main' that if his opponents concentrate they can make if extremely tropical for him. - Butt is pretty generally conceded thatMitchell will be nominated in caucus and put through on the first ballot. -'Tis interesting in the abstract to note the course of "polities' which to the average candidate is confounded with place. In every fight like the present the prospect ive bowls of soup constitute the prize for which all are striving. The man that is out of it is the best off. Years ago we ran for of fice and, luckily got left, because we told the people in our speeches just what we believed to be the truth instead of what they wanted to hear. 'Tis like the measles or whooping cough, or falling in love, or getting vaccinated: it comes to nearly every one semetime: lie gets over it, and goes on all right. But, seriously speaking, it is worthy of note how much the getting and holding of office has come to be a profession. ' It is a trade by itself, and one that requires skill, tact, and a long apprenticeship in whicli to win success. It lakes a high order of talents of a certain kind, and we know of nothing in our civilization that more apth illus trates the doctrine of natural se lection than the perseverance with which men continue to seek for of fice and profitable emolument and so arrange that ultimate triumph may crown the result. As for be lieving all that is said of a man in prominent position none but the depraved or utterly foolish do that. A man that has no enemies doesn't amount to a hill of beans. The fact that he has no enemies shows that he has no individuality; that there is nothing positive to him; that he never "stays with" what he says. Of course we don't mean that the possession of one's neigh bors' ill will indicates any exit a ordinary cleverness; but our mean ing can be illustrated by the re mark we once heard an old man in Wisconsin make in reference to a neighbor ot whom 'twas said "there was no harm in him.,, "No," was the rejoinder, "nor is there any -good in' him, cither." As Frank Pixley says in the last number of his free-spoken paper: "The man .who-has no enemies deserves no friends. The man who has never made a mistake, or done wrong, . is the man who never had the cour age to attempt to assert the right. The man who has never slopped over is like the empty bucket that has no contents to spill, and the man who can, truly say that he has changed no opinion, and has been ever consistent, makes the broad .. admission that he is an idiot who has had no opinions to change. It is better to be right to-day tHan consistent with 3Testerda3'. The broad-minded man of brains who has the courage to thinkisl neces sarily progressive. He keeps pace with 4 events. CHc keeps abreast with the time. He changes with conditions. c He rises to the level of his surroundings, lie has the couragejto 'breast 'the popular wave'and to stem the popular cur rent. "When the Augean stables '"were cleansed-of their accumulated filth by the labor of neicules, tiie dung of oxen floated with the cur- ijrent of the stream. It is the amp ly bottles and the rotten apples that, drifting with the.tide, proudly exclaim: 'See how we swim.5" STEW TO-DAY BOOKS FOR THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS! CARs, ASL5R.
