Her canru is worth 8134,000, of which Astoria contributes SllG.000. The New Tacoma telegraph operator has been arrested for alleg ed embezzlement of the company's money. The fall term of school in upper Astoria will begin on the first Mon day in September, with Mis3 Allen as teacher. Capf. Hustler calls attention to the fact that five per cent, maybe saved by paying city taxes before next Monday. The new steamer Queen of the Pacific, arrived with a cargo of rail road material at San Luis Obispo, last Tuesday. Mr. E. C. Holden, who took a dip to The Dalles with his daughter, Mrs. V. J. Strong, returned on fyes terday afternoon's boat. The sociable at Liberty hall to morrow evening is under the auspices of the ladies of Grace church. There will be refreshments furnished. a heavy blow set in. ami at - o'clock a. m. the oilier boat went into the breakers and was not i-ecn again by them. The boat that landed at the cape was considerably damaged, but Mr. Desmond assisted in repairing her, and she left Monday morning for San Francisco. It will be remembered that owing to the fact of not being able to go on the Oregon the four men mentioned start ed from here, with the result, so far as stated. Bricklaying m Astoria. Work began on the brick building across the street, 3'cstcrday, and the occasion of Living the first brick in Astoria drew a large crowd. Instead of the usual noise of saw and ham mer, the click of the trowel and the cry of "mort."' was heard. Consider able discussion was prevalent as to whether brick or stone was the better for a foundation exposed to the action of the water, but as those most inter ested concluded it was more desirable to use artificial material, of cotirso brick goes. The bricks are set in ce ment, and after once rising above the level of high water the work can be pushed forward with rapidity, as there is a large force of men employed. As soon as the work rises to the level of the street the corner stono will be laid with the impressive ritual of the order, the ceremony will mark a new era in the history of Astoria, and will be worthy of remembrance. Kin sky: Di:ui Sin: I have the following proposition to make to the common council of Astoria through yon, to furnish a youd supply of puro water to the city of Astoria, on the follow ing terms: I will construct a reservoir capable of holding 2,000,000 gallons .f water, lined with cement and brick, 180 foot above high tide water, with pmujis and pipes of .mi trident rapacity to keep the .sinif tilled with water with sufficient pressure t throw water through a one and a half inch nozzle eighty feet in height 0:1 the custom house block, and will furnish stiiiiciunt water to throw from four nozzles at the same time that height for six bonis continuously, and will allow the citv of Astoria to attach not more than twenty hydrants. 1 will adso furnish water to the council cham ber and engine houses, also town hall and any other public building the city may erect for city purposes, for the sum of one hundred dollars per mouth to be paid monthly in city warrants, and the works to be exempt from city taxation. The said contract to extend for ten years from completion of the works. The works to be completed in one year from ftiguing wf the contrarct. I will also obligate inyeolf to furnish 500,000 gallons of water of pure quality daily to be consumed in the city on the same terms as water is furnished the citizens of Portland. The city by ordinance to give me the right to lay down pipes for the purpose of carrying the water in any of tho streets of the city, on my filing a bond to put the streets in as good repair as before the pipes were laid. The new Presbyterian church is a handsome building anil looks very well from tho exterior. It is confi dently expected that it will be ready for dedication about October 1st. A Presbyterian church at New Tacoma will be dedicated about the same time. Astoria has new waterworks! The establishment is located on Squcmoqua alrect just west of where that thor oughfare intersects with Cass street. By attaching a filter it is believed that the new enterprise will prove of great convenience to families in the vi cinity. Misery loves company. The Port land folks are in nearly as bad a fix about water supply as Astorians. Wo commend the condition of Oregon's two principal cities to the considera tion of the temperance folks. They can discourage the consumption of spirituous beverages by providing a supply of water, and it needn't "sparkle," either. E. M. Giannini, who has beeu arrested for the murder of Iticco, at Skamania, implicates his employer, C. F. Candiani, and says he is the murderer. Candiani is a nativo of Piemonte, northern Italy, is a noble man in his own country and when ho arrived here was possessed of 25,000 or 30,000. He look a colony of Italians into Yamhill county, where ho purchased eome land, but having no.business tact, he mado i poor in vestment and lost his inonoy. Ho had also a number of valuable diamonds on which he was forced to realize and lie went to cutting logs. After a while he and Giannini turned iheir attention to making syrup from pota toes, but that was not panning out. Candiani afterward complained of his ill-lock and was mortified at his fall from a high station to that of a Hay laborer. Considerable excitement was I manifest in a retail establishment, in this city yesterday, occasioned by too much water. The clerk, whose duty it was to attend to the water faucet, got tired of running around at 7 o'clock "to seo if it was running," and left the appendage open. The result was when the first arrival appeared in the morning the steady drip from the ceil ing showed that it was "running."
