c; V gTc gang sts.vUi?u ASTOKIA. OREGON: THintSDAY t. F. II.4LLU1M.V.. ....Editor Astoria Chamber of Commerce. It is :tn accepted fact in all circumstances that "the Lord helps those who help themselves.' Particularly is this the case wheic the good to be done depends mainly upon the efforts of the parties most interested, f-n all organized and progressive commu nities there is a society organized having for its object and purpose the advancement of the city's best interests and the furnishing 'aid to all enterprises looking to municipal aggrandizement. These societies and organizations, arc of value in direct ratio to their efforts and personal efliciency. "We have here in Astoria an organization the Chamber of Commerce which is directlv illustrative of the jood that can thus be accomplished. In Portland 'tis but necessary to read the records of their Board of Trade to sec what immense bene fit has accrued to that city through the organized efforts of her bui-nes- men. Our home institution has also a worthy record. Among the many points advocated and endorsed by the Astoria Chamber of Commerce may be mentioned its successful effort to have the U S. revenue cutter detailed for Columbia river service; the work of building alight house on Tilla mook rock Is due primarily to the petitions and representations of that body; the improvement of the Columbia river bar has been es pecially advocated and treated upon by the Chamber of Com merce, and the lack of success in its efforts in that direction are due wholly to extraneous causes. Xo place can exist having so many natural advantages as Astoria without having enemies. This is perfectly natural. Diversity of interests and supposed necessity for consequent antagonism on -the part of more wealthy compe titors often result in producing an opposition that has no real icason for existence. Time and perse verance are wonderful allien, and in this case must bo called in. The work on the Locks and the Cascades has been faeiliated by reason of the memo rials from our local trade body, and the presence of the Shubriek at Astoria is due to the most, strenu ous efforts on the part of the gen tlemen composing that body. The office was located hcie. but other .ind presumably weightier icasons were advanced, which moved the office to Portland while the head quarters of the vessel remained here. The signal station now to be built at the Cape, and connected by line and cable with Astoria, was especially petitioned for and advo cated by our Chamber of Com merce. We instance the.-e mat ters which. "have all redounded .to the good of the place, as illustrative of the good that that body has been. It still has a great, deal to accomplish. Vast and pressing are the needs of the place; concert of action and continued unanimity of effort aie required to produce necessary help from those who can aid us if out case is properly represented. Wc again cite the Portland Board of Trade as a good model; they work hard for Portland; they de serve credit for their persist ence. Our Chamber of Com rnerce works for Astoria. In one lseoseithe interests of the two com inanities arc identical; and the. two commercial bodies carr work h -harmony for the advancement of the common good. 1 u conclusion, we -would suggest that of late , there has not been that activity on the part of the Chamber of Com merce that characterized its former course. "We think this is due more ' to the lack of interest manifested in its proceedings by our citizens than to any other cause. The greater part of the members have worked hard for the success of the measures advocated, without meet- inpr that unanimity of individual j endorsement which is always an : incentive to a ood purpose.
