Jlcnrv V:nl Ueeclier, crt fay tic rtlirrlr in 1 m. itntn. , I mon accenrniion 01 me worn,-is, concerned, burns ins ships behind him in. the. August number of the North 'American Review. In his pulpit he has long1 been preparing for the work, but the act may now be said to be completed. Of the Scriptures he says: "They have authority onry concurrent with (educated human reason and ra tional moral sense." In speaking of the Evangelical Confession of Faith he utters sentences that might have harmoniously fallen from the lips of Ingersoll. The scientific accountpf the origin of man and the nature of sin is, in his words, compared with the ac count given by the 'church, "as health to sickness, as life to death." And again: "Uut the most astound ing jjart of this account of creation is that God, when he had created innocence and inexperience, per mitted them to be debauched, and went on to transmit to the whole human race, through all time, the degradation, sin and suffering of these divinely-destroyed experi mentalists of Eden." This doc trine of the Fail of Man in Adam, .he claims, uis fundamental to the whole orthodox theology of the world. The system could not stand a moment if it be exploded. Every man entering the orthodox church is obliged to - hold and to teach it. There is no difference in that respect between the Catholic, and Protestant creeds." And the doom of orthodoxy, .Mr. Beecher declares, U pronoun ced. The influences that are ac complishing its downfall are those of advancing thought. The :-in-- telligence and sympathy of thc common people" are greater than the clergy. "An audience of fathers and mothers understand what fatherhood is. No ingemi3.t- or eloquence can persuade them that a God, who for ten thousand years has labored to produce an 'infinite population of damnable souls, can with decency be called our Father. Ministers are af fected by the atmosphere. They first gloss the rreed with a new interpretation, then they prudent ly hold'it in suspense, then doubt it, then cast it away." The power . of. the bible to sustain -it is being rapidly overcome. Jts verbal in spiration, Mr. Beceher contends, must be submitted to the test of "nature of which human reason is a part. He can see the gradual adaptation of creeds to present knowledge, in contravention of the orthodoxy vhicli says that "a saintly life dissenting from a barbaric (sic) creed is not worthy of sympathy , or a membership in the church." The indications are in his view un mistakable. "It is beginning to be permitted men to preach their own views undipped by creeds. Sa gacious and cautious men arc qui etly sowing seed which they know will, by and by, destroy old no tions." ITe finds that there arc other men -who testify to the change bv greater zeal in defend ing the old creed. The -prodigious development of physical science within the last half century, thc writer regards as the potent leaven of the advance 'in religious thought. The doctrine of the conservation of forces 5nrJ thc -discovery of evolution, which he unhesitatingly sets down as the method of creation, are tnainly instruments in doing the work. These are fatal to the Biblical account of thc creation of ""'theuniverse and that of man. Mr. Beecher's Darwin ianism ' is evi dently firmly rooted. uThe pre- sumption gains, ground that the hairi of succession is unbroken, and that,.as civilized man unfolded from the barbaric and savage man. ao.the human race itself is devel !In thc Shi f Such scicntiGcj ! revelations as tuese must the truth !of the Kible he selected out, ami ) " " J rojectcl. ll,c creeds of the luiure will bngin where I lie old ones ended: upon the nature ! of man, hi social duties ami eivil obligations, the development of ' his reason, hi, spiritual nature. ' its range, possibilities, odueatiim I ,, , . ,, um uociiiue u numan ieasoi:. of the emotions of the will , man as an individual.man social and S , collective, etc But the distinguished preaehei has no fears for the result. H. sees rather in it the emancipation of religion. The religious senti ment is more widely diffused and firmly held than ever before. The j utility of the churches will pre serve them. They are necessary as disseminators of moral doctrines, benevolences and intelligence. They are simply casting off tin-worn-out shell. The old .sloiic.-.d the Creation and of the Fall of Man must take their places with the myth of other religions, and also the scheme of reparation and redemption, "equally ficti tious and delusive, and destined to give place to a nobler view of divine, nature and providence, and of the divine thought of tip re demption and elevation of man kind." Mr. Beecher is careful lo profess a profound regard for the Bible, while he makes it the ser vant instead of the master of thc human reason. ITc docs not tell us that the immaculate conception and other miracles are to be class ed as legends merely, but leaves us to infer his opinions on these points, and also to be impressed with the idea that he would like to say more to free his soul, but that he has been restrained by prudential considerations. The criticism lo which this notable paper is likely to bo subjected promises to be of an extensive and lively nature.
