Westpoiit, Jnly '2?,A, 1882. j EtHTon Asteriax: Township seven north six west is urisuvvoycd, it corners within half a mile of the store and postoflico at this place, and has terr actual settlers on what is supposed to be section one and two. Each year, for the last five years, they have signed and sent a humble petition to the honorable furveyor general to have this land surveyed, all of which he has re jectcd. The district attorney, however, does not neglect his duty, as a deputy marshal, nrado his appaaraco last week and arrested Mr. Miller, one of tho settlers, for the offense of cutting cord wood on the land he wished to clear, three green trees and some down timber, less than a hundred cords in all. Ho was placed tinder bonds for trial and informed that one hundred dollars and costs was the least penalty under the law. This amount of money taken from one industrious family is a serious matter to them, it represents a great deal of hard work and self denial. Setters are not impres3rve spectacles when dressed in their ordinary business suits, and as a general thing they do not want the best. Rut their light to live upon, im prove and have this land surveyed, is nurely a jnst one which should be recognized by the govornment ollicors, one set of which neglects, while auotht?persecuto3 them. 0T OP THE T. per press back aroused doubis as to his sanity. It was a stormy afternoon last Janu ary that Lawrence sped around Asto ria's streets to get a license and a min ister: both wcie secured, "and fn the p.irlor of the Occident the marriage ceremony was performed, ami he and Miss XellieSloan were jin.nonnocd hus band and wife; the next morning they sailed fur San Francisco on the steamer State of California. Then came the nine days' wonder-, the Irneing up of singular actions on the part of both the actors in the social drama, and then a languid interest in 'how it would e:.d." The partner's in dupli city went acioss tho continent, and i took steamer for Europe.tin.illy halting at Derne, Switzerland. Here the in evitable result took place, arid Law-. rence wrote his injured wife begging her forgiveness. This request was ig nored and proceedings instituted for a divorced; tiring of his illicit freak, he sent the companion of his eight-thou-Band-nrilc tnp back to her 'uncle' in JJlooimnglon, Illinois, having been pre viously compelled to dKgorge some of the coin that he had taken in a lit of abstraction from his wife on tire oe- jcasion of hrs leaving Portland. Here the public had about loc sight of l ho scamp, and had almost forgot ten him, when, to lire infinite fair-; prise of everyone, be stepped oil the gangway of the Columbia on the Dili of last May, as she lay at the dock in Portland. The man of many aliases was ".lack Livingston, of New York," this timo, ami registering at lire Clar endon, procirred a carriage and started irr search of hii wife. Thi3 poor lady was completely prostrated by the shock of his sudden appearance, and when her frierrds had realized that he was ically back again, they promptly had him arrested upon a charge of bigamy. The impression upon every one's mind when thev heard that he had come back again, was that he was "a bigger fool than Thompson's colt." He insisted that his motive for corn ing back was to see his wife and bc;r her forgrveness; the assump tion that he was out of money, out of luck, thoroughly disgusted, and relied upon his suavity io induce the injured woman to again take him back, he says has no foundation irr fact. Ho said he had hoped that by repentance he would be allowed to agaitr resume his place irr society, arrd probably was rieht in his conclnaiods, j but was too sudden, too abrupt, as it were, for tho average Oregonian to catch on. Probably had he done his lepenting elsewheie, and dropped back after a season f sackcioth and husks; the fatted lf and "even the ring might have been produced; as it is, it is as it is. The alleged crime having been com mitted in Cl.itsop county he has been taken here, lo stand hii trial. It is i.ot our province to comment on his case; what wo have written has been simply a resume of facts that occurred; with the question of his irrrxocerrce or jjuill w have nothing to do; Your lVitfe Want Ore' of tho-eoil sIomm; neat ami eon- venieiii.
