The celobration at Vaiic'iuver, wnch was to have eclipsed ewrvthinc north b' tlaming postcrs.nnd fulsome notices, and the people were on tip toe of ex pectation. A shmu battle b' the sol dies of the garrison, was to have been the leading feature, and the people wanted to sen that more than all the rest of tho exercises, consequentl there was a rush for the boats at nine o'clock, four times as many as tho boats and barges could carry. When the first installment had arrived at Vancover the battle was in progress and nearly over. The steamers Vane-ovver and Lurlinc and two barges, undo the manage ment of the G. A. R.. did not arrive iill 12 o'clock, and were crowded in a most hoggish manner. Someone was bent on making mono at the expense of life and limb, and it is singular enough that man' people were not killed. Cattle in box cars arc seldom treated worse. As it was, women and children were jostled about, knocked down and trampled upon. One lad' had to fall over her baby tc save its life, and tho surging crowd was beaten back b' a gentleman to save the mother and her child. This is only one instance of a hundred similar to it. The officers of tho boats and the managers of tho G. A. IX. refused to allow persons to get on top of the barges, though often requcsied. in or der that people might have a little more room below. The foundation for the celebration was broad enough for n gigantic .flair, ana would have horn n i.;!ivn in the hands of com-1 i . . pclent managers. There were about ',000 ,pcop!o from Portland who wanted to get home on the first boat, and they th-cked en mas2 to the dock. While waiting, a timber in tho whaif civ.cked, and some oiir shouted that tho wharf was break ing down, which created a stampede, and in tho rush people wero knocked down again. After a great deal of time and much forced patience tho visitors got back home. The Travel er was the last to leaw, and had two barges which she lloated down the Co lumbia at tho mouth of the Willam ette. But she was unable to make the turn, and was struggling with tho current when the Lurime reached her, and took one of tho barges. A regu lar kuock-down and drag-out fight ensued among parties who viantcd to crowd fiiim ono boat lo the other, but they all managed to get here about half nast eleven. Thus ended the sham battle and hiiam celebration at Vancouver. Uurlhtiv) Standi' nl. The Pireuiens Association of Oregon. Th bill pending in Congress to pay the expense of President Garfield's illness hn given rise t' unpleasant debate. Lis in tiiu s-cnate, Y-st. of 3 rise to considerable Lisr Wednesday, Missouri, said it was well known that the iafe presi-, denr, it not bntehereo, wa unques-j tioiuiMiy a. victim u iiriipRie'ice iu iih last illness. For twenty' da s ho was physicked, leached probed and lanced, while the bullet that was eating away his life never for u moment came un der the attention of the physicians from a medical or scientific point of view alone. The foes were grossly enormou?, and would not be allowed U3' a court in an ordinary case. Ve?t theu referred to a uew.spapcr charge during the president's illness, that while public bulletins wen; giv ing favorable reports, the president's plysicians were telegraphing in cipher to Wall street brokers Information ex act!' tho it-verse of that which W& being published. He thirught it due to the country that investigation into that chargo should even ! b. nude. He regarded the change of Dr. Biiss of $8000 for ten days nttcuilaucc as exorbitant, and had read at the clerk's desk a statement b' Dr. Hoynton to the effect that on or about August S, 1881, he was informed by the late president that Dr. IJIiss was. a volun teer in the case. In this connection the testimony given b' Dr. P.liss that he was sent for by the secre tary of war was read. H-tle said ho was unable to appre ciate tho force of Vest's criticism upon the medical treatment of the late president as a failure. The fact was universally admitted that the presi dent's wound was necessarily fatal. After further remarks the amendment offered by Corkrill reducing the ap propriation from 75,000 to $52,500, and provisos were adopted requiring claimants to file a release under seal of all claims against representatives of the late president growing out of his illness and burial. Tho section pro vailed as amended, and the bill passed. Some Points. There arc somo queer things nbout newspapers, in spite of their generally superior and edifying character, and one is their way of speaking about un pleasant occurrences.. One can hardly pick up a paper at this time of the year without seeing in it an account of a sad drowning accident, as it there were distinctions in such mat ters, Kinging from "grave, to gay. from lively to severe," and it was the! uiiemiou iu aiiiuv 111:11 1111s particular incident, however it might bo with others, had nothing hilarious about it. So with homicides, it is quite the way to describe them as "shocking mur ders," when, if one reflects on the subject, it will appear that such affairs commonly me so. Of course, there will bu a difference of opinion about the taking off of book agonis and lightning-rod men, but the gonoral principlo still holds good thar, broadly speaking, no murder is soothing to tho mind.
