HAIXOEAX.. - r"'m" f--i)t for freedom, for Oregon's Senator. j humanity,, and in the hope that "Caix no man happy till ho dies," said Solon, thus tersely voicing the thought of all ages, that posthumous 'fame alone does inctfop to tne-'meinorv and the merits' of men. ' . Among the many names that we of this coast delight to honor, not even the name -of Broderick, of California, excites more reverential lemembrance'than that of Colonel Baker, United States senator from Oregon, who fell; as the world knows, while .leading his men in the fight at Ball's Bluff, Ya. On the 30th ult., Congressman George, of this btate delivered the Decoration Day. address at Balls Bluff, and, in a eulogy of the gal lant snint, ho said: ."Ho was a wonderful man One of thoscgen- j iuses of nature which flash thwart j across the skv of human existence, i ,-,., - , . ., i i ,' , i it Offoreign birth.he laid down his life for the 'country of his adoption.! We were proud of him. .My state, the most distant on the golden Pa cific, honored him with her highest trust. He was our senator when ho fell. We are proud of our fol-tlicrOur-prator, our statesman, and our heio. Baker was patriotic and magnanimous. His was the clar ion voice in the grand volume of invocation which everywhere rose to high heaven, "Spare us from the madness of disunion and civil -warj" and he wns'the lastl of the senators to give up the hope that something might be done by conciliation and compromise. He hoped, he sympathized, lie strug- gled to the last, but alf in vain. At the linnl moment he nerved him self for the desperaii- encounter. Iniho sendte,tn thfce wnrdshe pro claimed his intentien: 'Now,' I will not vote to lay down arms till, with- out treatythe flag of the United St-ites waves over overy "portion of its territory. Till then give the pi esi- dent a million men, rnve him the whole revenue of the government, the whole property of the people; do not refuse a single regiment; do furl a single sail; do not abate a single- jot of all your embrittled vigor till that hour has ceme: do -not make peace until the glory of the American flag shall be its own defense. Why, sir,' he exclaimed, 'I have heard it said that theie was a time in Ireland when a virgin, alone, unguarded, could ao through all its length and breadth with'a crown upon her head and a golden v.iso in her hand, arid no man dis turb her honor or rob her of her treasure. I desire, before I make - peace, to see the time when a vol unteer drummer boy shall be able to carry the flag of tlio United States in eiery city and in every wilderne-s where it has once float ed, amid the enthusiasm, the sub mission, the profound reverence, of ever' man, woman, and child who-gazes upon its stars.' Ho, like Clay and Webster and Jack son and Lincoln, was for trying thestrength of the constitution. His soul became fired with military ar dor at the attack upon Sumptcr's walls; and At a mass-meeting in Onion Square, in New York, he delivered an address which thrilled the souls of all who heard it. Ho there pledged bis porsonal ser vices to his country as a' soldier, and closed "with these impressive and eloquent words, which wore greeted with' a tlfunder of ap plause: 'And if from the far Pacific a voice feebler, than the feeblest muruiur upon its shore maybe heard to give you courage and-hopo in this contest, that voico is yours today. And if a man whose hair is giay, who is well nigh worn out in the battle and toil of life, may pledge himself on -such an occasion as. this,. and in such nnaudience 'let me -say, as mv lost. word, when amid sheeted fire and flame 1 saw and led the ho'sts'oFNew York as they charg ih contest-upon," foreign soil for the honor of your flag, so "'again, if Providence shall will it, ; this -(coble -liana shall draw a SWOrd never Iyct dishonored act to fight fcr distant honor ia a foreign land, out u ngnc tor country, for home, for law, for government, for consti- " T , J ""'" au" . ..t, um iiciuauuvcr mat oan- ner waves there glory may pur sue and freedom bcestablished.' ' It is a sad coincident, inview of the eloquent oration delivered by Cclonel Baker, in California, on the laying of the Atlantic cable, when he joyfully proclaimed that "thought had bridged the Atlantic and cleared its unfettered path across the sea, winged by the lightning and guarded by the bil low," joining Europe and America, and calling, as he did, for another Field to scale the Sierra Xevadas as ho had sounded the sea, until. the. Atlantic and Pacific had lt'- linked together. That, Mugulni as it may seem, the first mesiage, a few years after, flashed actors the completed link to the Pacific carried a current of sonow to the !P'lP',J of tlio Mebt in j'" J - . thu nouncement of the death of Colo- nel Baker. Ttist So. Talkino about advertising, and the too prevalent practice of beg ging people to advertise, the New Tacoma Ledger sensibly .is: "If men do not believe in advertising, if they do think it necessary for the promotion of their business and it is not infrequently the ease that newspaper advertising would be of no benefit why seek to force it upon them? Are they not the best judges of their own busi ncss, seeing that they have better acquaintance with it both end-ally-and in detail- than anv one else? Do not force it, do not press it, for your own personal reputa tion as a man of spirit and pride in a professon which should rise above the calling of beggaiy. Mako a good paper, put eapitai of labor and coin into it. so that it will win circulation and bc- comu tvamamo as an auverusinir mcriium. Ivven announce the. iact and declare that it is valuable, if you can truthfully doso, just as men declare that their groceries and drygoods are valuable, but in the name of Heaven, for your own sake and for the sake of a huge number of worthy people in your profession, do no! button-hole your neighbors and whine like a weak cur about giving ''support" to the papers asking them for an "ad." .It is contemptible. It is outrageous. It is outrageous that every time these neighbors yon have whined to and button-holed and bored meet with a newspaper man they look upon him with con tempt, and are free with him, think ho has no money, and le gard him as a proper person to make a butt on all occasions, and to belittle in many ways.,J (.. i - .r-- Tin: Democrats of California Ifavu nominated General Stone- man, of Los Angeles, as their candidate for governor at the en suing election. The piominent contestants were IIearst,who30 only claim was that he owned 820.000, 000 worth of property, and John son, who based.all his strength on tho fact that he wasa"C. P. man." Stonetnan is a rarity in these days, he is positive, honest, with clean hands, and a good record, and rep resents tho better element of Cali fornia politics. Thr.ee years ago, under the new constitution craze, there wero three rail road commissioners olected , J3eer9tetober, of .. Saii Francisco, Cone",' of-Red Bluff, and Stone man. The first two fell down beforo tho potent" influonce of the sack; Stonetnan was not purchasable, and voted in the minority. He deserves credit, and will bo a hard man to beat.
