It is probable, that wc will not have a new scboolbouse this sea son; the trustees deeming it ad visable under the circumstances to postpone any further letting of contracts till next year. At the time they advertised in-TirE Asto eiak for bids they received sev eral, and accepted one from Port land, but just about the time the contractor was read', the shingle mill there turned down, the high water compelled the shutting down of a saw mill, the Yaquina with her cargo of lime burned, there was a "corner" on sand, and talc ing everything into consideration it was, deemed best to accede-to his request and cancel the -contract, for the season is so far ad vanced now that it would be im possible to commence operations and .get through in anything like season. The old Fchoolhouso has had -sundry necessaryattentions, and has been" put in better shape than thai of last year, so that the future citizens, will, during the coming school year, occupy their old quarters to vacate them uevt year for what promises to bo one of the finpt buildimrs in the .Mate l Few iFfcures. Tuoumrtlie official count of the vote cast at the election hold in this state on iho th insf., will not be till to-morrow, yet enough is known to predicate a few state ments relative to the results of the vote, and a comparison with prp JDOHSeIjDj:tions.iiijhis jjtate. In 1878,Whiteakvr,lthe Domo " craticvcaTididatefor' congress, hid 1,151 majority. The total vote of i tlie state tint year was 33,020.. In. June, 1SS0, George, the II ' publican "congressional Candida to, - received aA majority of 1,397, out .of a 'total vote of 38,OG0. This sliGwed an .increase in two years of 5,030 votes, and a Republican in crease of 2,548 votes out of that 5,030. In the presidential elec r tion of November 1S80, there were 40,823 votes cast, this-was a . large voje, but presidential elec tions are famous for the alert style in which the franchises arc brought .'.out and enumerated. The Republi cans carried the state by GG4 ma jority, showing an apparent loss .of 733 votes in four months. In the same ratio of increase thai was exhibited between June 1878, and 'November 18S0, the total number of votes cast at the last election should have been &(' least 45,000. Bu"t therewere only '4.0,003 votes cast on the 5th inst., being 800 votes less than two years ago, "though fifteen counties in the state " shov,a gain, Multnomah county polling 0,250 votes in June 18S2, against 5,039 in June 1880. The only inference is. that the outlying districts" take more interest in presidential elections than any other. j v In Clatsop county, the vote has . exhibited. 'some fluctuations. In '.,-178 wo pollod l,03u votes, giving a -jiDemocrati mnjofity'o'I " 18. In the June election of 18S0 but 9JM votes were cast, with a Republican majority of 43; in the November elctwrftrjfrth"atycar 970 votes were "pIIell; tbej Republican ma- fix Twenty days ago there were 1,200 votes -cast in thi- county, an in crease of' 236 votes in" nineteen ' 'months, the county giving George 8C "majority. ..That gentleman' vote seems something phenomenal. 51n'78 Whiteaker beat Hines 1,151; in '82 George beat Whiteaker ,,228, a, difference in four years of,379 votes. Probably on a square Issuo the state would bo found" o bo Republfcaffby about 1,000 majority. " An editor offera tbreo dollars ,t tor the bestvritten lovo letter. There are some people who would igweAmore'than that to get back "some they have written.. Not only nautical men and mei chants all over the worl d, but busi ness men of all ktD ds who under stand that "timo'is money" 'will appreciate the practical value of a report recently presented in behalf of the foreign affairs committee of the houso, in which is recommend ed the adoption of a proposition that the president invite other powers to unite with us in fixing a common prime meridian for the computation of time throughout the world. "With the rapid exten-1 sion of telegraph facilities in all parts of the globe, this has become a matter of -ery serious import ance in all the pursuits of life. The enormous and yearly extrud ing business done by the great ocean cables strikingly illustrate-, the necessity for such a measure. New York to-day is very much nearer. for the practical purpobes of business than San Francisco Avas twenty years ago, and yet the re port shows that in rcgaid to :h exact computation of time at wide ly severed points wo are not to day, much further advanced than the world was in the time of Riche lieu.
