AAV If ' Vr 2 ..JUKE 20, 1M52 J.F IIILLOUAV. .Editor The Oneon of the Pacilie. The fleet that plies between As toria and San Francisco is justly famed for the elegance of its ap pointments, the courtesy of its officers -ond the regularity of its arrivals and departures. The new steamship s,The Queen of the Pa cific," now en route from Philadel phia is pronounced by those who have seen her to be even superior in finish to the Columbia, or State of California. The new vessel has been built to obtain the" highest clas3 in the Bureau Veritas for transatlantic service, and . holds a certificate to that effect. She is 33G feet long, 38.0 feet beam, 22.G feet hold, and 30 feet to awning deck. She is 2727.S0 tons custom house measurement. She has 1,200 tons dead weight cargo capacity, 400 tons bunker capacity on 1G feet draft. She is half-brig rigged with iron masts all one piece, and is well canvassed. She has an inverted direct-acting compound engine, with 43 and 90-inch cylinders and -iS-inch stroke of piston. She has valve pistons, the first ever applied in this countrv, fcimi lar to those on the Alaska, and is expected to develop 3,000 horse power, and a minimum speed of engine of SO turns per minute, which, with 1G0 pounds of steam, will give her a speed of 1C, knots an hour. She has eight boilers, 11 feet in diameter and 12 feet- long; with shells one inch thick, and 370 feet of grate surface, and will burn about GO tons of coal per day, working up to its full speed. The piopeller wheel i l(i feet in diameter and 23 feor pitch, the blades, and a spare set on board, having biin inade in England of magancse itionze, costing (with duty added 40 per cent.) about 815,000. ' One of the - features of the Qmcn of the" Pacific is the dome which covers the main staircase. Tliis is a true circle 14 feet in diameter ajid six feet high from the base, and from the main saloon deck to the apex of the dome in side is 22 ft. Tire dome is made in twenty-two segments and the filling is of figured stained glass, and from the center hangs an ex qu sitely jeweled electric chande lier. This dome is enclosed In a safety cover on the promenade deck, and between it and the dome proper there ai c placed bix elec tric lights which at night give a most ch'armilig effect,to' the dome and tho hocial hall. Tho grand saloon proper is 37 feet long by 37 feet wideband 7 fe'et -9 inches in height, and is lighted from the sides by twelve 15-inch side ports, and contains even tables capable of seating 200 persons at one time, giving to each person a seating width pf 25 inches, which is great er than tiMially allows J. She is lighted throughout by the Edison electric light system, which has been piit in under the personal superintendence of Mr. Wilson S. Howell, and she is the most per fectly lighted of any vessel in the world, there being 250 elcctriij lights distributed through the ship, with connections for placing lights on' wharves, at' hpr loading and dis charging ports on her route. This system uses- tho incandescent light, which-is small, soft and steady, and neither tiresome or "hurtful to the eyes. The lamp- consists of a pear shaped globe about 4 inches in height, exhausted of air, into' which is sealed" a filament of carbonized bamboo, slightly thick er than a horse hair. Tho steamer Columbia of this line' was fitted with the, Edison lighrs in 1879, and tho success of the sytem has' beon very marked. She had 115 lamps in circuit in February last, and they have been run over 415 hours, without even one lamp going ' 'out, the expense'being, for the 115 lamps, with coal at SG per ton, only 18 cents per hour. The vessel' will" arrive here about TUESDAY Want to Know, Yon Know. It would be interesting to know just what the parties to the unfor tunate strike which has beguu, think of the tariff, apropos tho ex isting stato of things. Men who ought to know better, not content with taking the tariff at what it is worth and stopping there, waste their breath "in arguing that all the country's prosperity and none none of its adversity is due to pro tection. The workman has been told from time immemorial that ho would have high wages as long as there was high tariff; but at the moment when everything else is highest, and his earnings go the shortest distance, he finds that the tariff or something else has goiie back on him, and that his wages cannot be raised. The employer has likewise been led to under stand that the boom of the ldbl few -ears was due to the customs laws, but though the duties are as stiff as ever he finds himself un able to pay his workmen the better wages which they ask, and Ins fur nace fires therefore go out. Not one or two, but several trains of events lead up to the lookout which now extends all over the country. Both the employer and employe know very well what the tariff has done for them, an I at times like the present cannot be blamed for inviting the doctors who prescribe more tariff for evt-rv ailment to throw their physio to the dojrs.
