Jsevekal years ago, says the Se attle Post-Intelligencer, an attempt was made to procure halibut off Cape Flattery by vessels fitted in Sau Francisco, and also belonging to Puget Sound, but without suc cess, and the enterprise was aban doned. In 1S79 tho schooner Emily Stephens, of Astoria, OS 80-100 tons burthen, Capt. Alexander A. Henderson, arrived at Xeah bay on the IGth day of July, from San Francisco, and sailed on the ISth j on a cruise for halibut, and ie-1 turned on the 2Gtli with 1C,000! pounds of halibut on ice. These fish were renorted to have been taken 10 miles off Cape Beale, at the entrance to Barclay sound, in 35 to 40 fathoms of water. Capt. "J ---- ---.r rsjLiLjajj.vrjJigJgrfr'.rr,",,.--T: Henderson stated that lie caught! ri quite a number of large halibut, some of them measuring seven feet in length and weighing 250 pounds. ,.,, , ... ... tnese halibut were sold in the ,San Francisco market, and al- though good prices vvero said to have been realized.yet the voyage was "ii urmmfilnliln .. -...I sionallv for f;lstilllt, A .' i.,.T iMOUJ" "r pastime. Their usual time of starting is early in tho morning at the top of high water. They then run out with the ebb tide, and on i caching the banks they fish until the return of tho tide, and as oon as the current runs too strong to enable them to keep their linos on the bottom they start for homo, and usually return late in the Hfternoon. Owing to the .strong cuireiit and tide rips al the entrance to Fuca sfrait, and the danger ol" go ing to sea in an open canoe, Hiis fishing can only bo pursued at sueh time as the .winds and tides are favorable; consequently - the amount of fish taken is lift as large as might be expected, nor as large a would be the result il" schooners wore employed capable of remaining on. the liani: at anchor to ride out gales or await a favorable state of the tide. During the usual run, common almost nvety season, the tribe catch and cure enough halibut not only for their own consumption, but have large quantities to noli to the Indians of other tribes. But I as they cure their fish without the addition ol salt, they find no -ale among the whites. The ancient method adopted by these Indians for taking halibut, which is pretty generally altered to at preseut,.is by fishing lines made of the giant kelp, and by hooks made of splints from hem lock knots steamed and bent into a shape like an ox bow, with a barb of bone fastened on with a thong to the underside of the bow, and the line being made fast to i thc upper side NTEV TO-DAl -- ......
