It is ajrostituticm of jour nalism for personal ends. The great mistake of Horace Greeley's life was that he aspired as. a news paper man to office, Fromtheday" he consented to become a Presi dential candidate his career as a journalist was closed. He was never the same man afterward. He died in a few brief months, a broken-hearted man. X either ought the managers or stock hold ers in great corporations to be can didates for political offices. If they seek such place? they are sure to employ capital and corporation agencies to insure an election. They never can under such cir cumstances, represent the people. The moral of the whole business is well understood. The incumbent has cither created or employed il legitimate machinery to elevate him to office. He owes allegiance to that capitalized machinery that has created him. . It has, says the Bulletin, come 10 be a favorite plan of operations on the part of ambitious candi dates, who have vastly more con fidence in the machinery created by capital than in the people, to se cure a newspaper ortran as a sort of hydraulic lift to elevate them to the desired position. A vat deal of pumping is required, and some times the lift is not strong enough to accomplish the purpose. What kind of an idea does-a political as pirant have of the province of jour nalism who buys a newspaper for the sole purpose of making it the special organ of his election to of fice? of who" employs the ma chinery which capital alone can procure for that purpose? A jour nal which can be secured for such a purpose can never be a newspa per in the better sense, and never an organ of public opinion upon any -footing to command public confidence. It may have the ad vantage of capital and oven exhibit enterprise. But it is attacked by a fatal diseaso, as sure to work mischief as the woolly aphis at the root of an apple tree. It is impos sible for any journal thus handi capped and hampered to get above a certain dead level. It is a mere person'al organ, and so long as it is that it can be nothing more. An Iron Tree. The iron palmetto at Columbia, S. Boarding Prisoners.
