A -wniTEn in the current num ber of the Pacific Christian Advo cate, speaking of the scenery of 'thrColiriatrhr river-, says'.-- - "When in '1792 'the barb Colum. bia cut its perilous way across the bar and opened to the- astonished eye of civilization tha broad vista of river and bay and island that swept into the deep embrace of the distant mountains, there was unlocked to future enterprise one of its grandest theatres of toils and triumphs. The immobile Indian living petrifaction of his remotest father had possessed its unfilled shores and looked out of his dark leaden eye on its unappreciated capabilities of commerce as well as its unmatched lines of beauty for all the ages. But the shadow of the widespread sails of the Colum bia on the waters was the shadow of the coming change. The mighty future was sweeping out of the dim and shadowy past. Entering the river and sailing eastward, both the northward atid the southern view are bounded by distant parallel ranges of moun tains, presenting every variety of outline. Now they arc bold, craggy 'and precipitous, or again they roll with it gentle easy swell into green and golden summit, among which the valleys of the mountain streamlets gracefully meander toward the river or the sea. Tongue Point shoots sharply out into the river, a mountain headland, from the south, while somewhat above, Csthlamet bay compensates the river for its loss on the south by pushing out into the mountains on the north. This scenery in this vicinity has the most charming mingling of beauty and sublimity. The river fivo miles in width, the mountains, the islands, the ever green forests above, relieved below along the margin of the river by a red and golden fringo of tlecidu .ous undergrowth, and all in every possible blending of beauty give a prospect rarely equaled, never ex celled. Above this vicinity the liver loses its bay-like character and diminishes its normal width, about one and a half miles, for the first hundred miles of distance from the sea. Many islands gem its surface. Eastward Mount Hood lifts its glittering pin nacle into tne sky more than a hundred miles away. Fur ther to the norih the round dome of St. Helens seems to lloat above the dark body of the mountain. Sailing up tiro lowei Columbia, when the clear hlue of an early summer r-ky answers down to the crystalline water, or the deeper bluo of the ii ti tu uiu hcavetii is re flected away 'upward again from the broad aud liquid mirror be neath, and the near mountain sides are kindled by the flaming red or golden yellow of the forest-touched leaves, gives the mind images and impressions of beauU that awake an unsung poem in every heart. Thirty voars aco Theodore Parker, Kin, Holmes and Emer- time prigtiiiited u celebrated bavin?; concerning fame: "What do you get for such' fcervice?"' asked a Boston friend. 'P.ikio," was the reply. "And is that all?'' exolaim ed the friend. "Fame, tir," said tho orator, in his consequential manner, "means 50 and my ex penses " Emerson wns noted for bis clear and musical voice, whiali, though by no means loud, was very penetrating. His lectures were always- read, and his eyes were fixed on the manuscript, but -there was such a fascination in his reading that it seemed that any other mode of delivery would bo undesirable? ,'-.., C.
