Hero is a new ene: A hollow log drawn from a Michigan river, on being sawed through the centra revealed fourteen black bass and one bull-head. Tho fish were so large as to lead to tho bolief that they found their way into tho log through a small hole, and afterwards grow so much that they could not get out. Of courso lots of it gets to be stereotyped, and the only wonder to me ia that we ever do get anything right new and fresh." "Yes," chipped in Ilaverly, "jokes get to be public property very quick, and if tho people only understood it as well as wo do they wouldn't kick about old gags. Xow, for instanco, we opened at San Francisco; nil our gags'were new and bright. Nobody could say that they had heard them before. Well, there was a fellow who ran one of theso little programmes in newspaper form. Ho thought tho jokes were pretty good and just sat down and took notes on them all. Nest evening tho little paper had all the jokes and gags in it, and from thero they were copied everywhere After that, when anybody would hear of our jokes, the chances are they would say, 'Oh, I saw that in sumo paper. J Hat s wnat tnaues it so naru now gags. I see some shows advertise, 'AH our jukes new and fresh nothing stale, etc' That can't be, because after a joke's repeated onco everybody who wants to bo smart takes it up and it ceases to be. new any more. "Wo depend a good deal, too, on the papere for our jokes," said Mack, with an evident desire to give tho pcragrapher his meed of justice. "Talking about newspapers and, gags," said Havorly, "I'll tell you a little stery: 1 had a gag that i3 as old as the hills, now, but I got it up my self, and it was a good one. It was that one about tho Mississippi,: Why don't they stop tho Mississippi from overflowing? Why, dam it, they can't. See? Snedo to this country, and he's a Swede still; bring a Russian, and he's a Russian; bring a Turk, aud he's a Turk; bring a Span iard, and he's a Spaniard; but bring an Irishman, ajjd he's a policeman.' That's a good end gag, but was taken fromscmo newspaper." The whole three nights we wevo thero I don't think we got off ono old gag, and the people flocked by the hun dreds to hear us." "Nearly every mar. has Ids special ty," said Ryman, "and, as a matter of c-jurss. that includes more or less jokes, good, bad and indifferent. That tells tho whole thing in a nut shell. Some make them up them selves, some-have somebody to write them and some steal them out of tho newspapers." Contrary to the general impression, Kalama is by no means n detrted vil lage. At least fifteen families live there, and every dwtdhng house worth occupying is occupied. Thw business of the town is limited, and there h but Iittlo hopes of increase for many yesr3 to come. The location there of the county seat makes Kulnuit the homo of a number of officials. It is also helped considerably by the loca tion there of a number of important CJnitcd State3 and Territorial Courts. Further, there being the end of tho railroad from the Sound and the point of connection with the steamers of the Columbia river, a vast amount of freight is to bo handled two or three timos, amounting to two or three thousand tons, a month, and necessi tating a. nutnberof men in addition to these on boats and trains. There is also a good hotel there, and , store. besides Methodist,, Catholic and Epis copal churches, a doctor, a telegraph office, ticket office, &c. In acensu3 bulletin just icceived from the bureau at Washington there are somo interesting statistics of farms in tho several states. The following figures are for the state, of Oregen: Tho total number of farms sn tho state, according to tlw census ol 18S0, 10,217; census of 1870, 7,587; 18G0, 5,800; 1850, 1,104. Number of farms occupied by owners in 1880, 13,928; number rented for fixed money rental, 741; number rented for shates of pro duce, 1,538. Tho following is tho classification of farms according to acreage: Number under three acres, 13; three to ten acres, 172; ten to twenty, 207; twenty to fifty, C79; fifty to ono hundred, 1,723; ono hundred to five hundred, 11,791; fivo hundred to ono thousand, 1,230; over ono thou sand, 452. Tho last item is greater than New Vork, which has only 181 in hat clas. California has 2.531 farms of over one thousand acres.
