(I) gfce Sail stnriwa ASTOItfA-OKEGOS: SUNDAY - APB1L SO, 1M2 J.r KlIAUXiS.. r.(J:.-.r. The Lord's Day. It was Sancbo Panza, vro be lievo, the factotum end servant of tho Knight of the Rueful Counten ance, who gave utterance to the memorable saying, "Blessed be the man that invented sleep." We might supplement the saving, or move as an amendment, "Blessed be the man that invented Sun day' Looked upon simply as a human institution and in that light we legardit it is the- very embodi ment of human wisdom. Indeed it is the grandest of all inventions one fraught with the greatest con sequences to the race. It is the sunburst through the cloud the light upon the tower tho gleam of hope and joy to the soul. To all mankind worlc of some sort is a necessity. To the va3t majority it is the weary bearing of heavy and often times painful bur dens, with no rest nor respite save that which comes of the precious custom which dedicates and, in a religious sense, consecrates one seventh of the time to rest. Al though Sunday is claimed by the church as a holy day, to be de voted exclusively to religious uses, it also belongs to the world to be enjoyed as reason and conscience should ever dictate. It was made for man, and is the property of all who claim it. "Let no man there fore," says Paul, "judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy-day, or of the nw moon, or of the Sabbath days." A heaithy public sentiment needs no Sunday law to enfoice z. general observance of the day. By making Sunday a uon-jtidieial day, wherein no civil business is re quired to be performed, the state acts most wisely. In this it has the approval of every citizen; and in this also it invites a general suspension of business, that, as far as pos-iible, all may enjoy the rest they nerd. To secure tho best and truest blessings of Sunday it is found necessary thaiTu few should work in order to enhance the comfort ind enjoyment of the, many Whut society wants is a higher apreciatio'i of unday. But more than alii:, wants an order 01 hu manity that will have a higher ap preciation of all days, and of the opportunities of life generally. It cannot well have tho former until it secures the latter . All that hurts or degrades man. physically or spiritually; all that leurds his moral and intellectual advance ment; ia short, all that is not a help to him in some way, phouhl be discountenanced. To this end every good citizen should lend a helping hand. For in that direc tion lies the truest welfare of so ciety. X Chanea for Biicnssiou. Tee Oregonian is reliably in formed that an interview has been held between Mr. Moody and Sir. Smith, nominees for governor, at which it has been ci rouged, bv mutual agreement, that there will be no "joint discussion," and neither tf them will make public speeches in the campaign, nor will either be represented by a speaker. "Each will probably visit various points in the state to meet the peo ple, but the extent of the speech making by each will be limited at most to a single address at his home town. This it creditable to both parties, as it avoids the un seemly spectacle of public sparr ing and fencing exhibitions be tween those whose position ought to be a guarantee against a pro ceeding so undignified." So even that much jfmi.it denied the boys! Of cour;e,-asMr. George is attend ing to his duties at Washington, ki3 antigonUt, .Mr. Fenton, cannot in courtesy "make an aggressive canvass of the state. We shall probably have to depend on local talent to enthuse the voters. lil HI It BpSaiJ.H The anti-Chinese bill, vhich passed tho house two wcoka ago by a voto of 201 to 37, parsed the j senate last Friday by a vote of 32 ! to 15. It now becomes the pain- ful necessity- of His Accidency to j sign it. He can't belp tho matter by refusing; for, should he bo far forget the requirements ot the hour, theie will be mora than tvrc thirds of the American congress not so unmindful of tho dignity of American citizenship. It is a vic tory for the Pacific coast, a victory of common sense over flabby sen timent and ensh. The business of the late A. T. Stewart in New York is to be closed. Since the great merchant's death, six years ago, Judge Hiiton has been running the business. In July, 1877, ho made a mortal mis take in ordering that no Jews be admitted in the Grand Hotel at Saratoga, which was part of i e Stewart estate. Seligman, -.&- man aimed at in tho ridiculous at-1 tempt at ostracism, said then that Hilton would wind up in five vears, and he has. DIED AtSkamokwa. W. T..
