Tue" platform o the- Democ racy, wMbh Vili be- found in an other column, is about up to the usual platform standard of that party, -and 'is chiefly remarkable for what it does not say. Upon points that are conceded by all to have but one sensible status, it is very emphatic, upon points of special importance it is silent; upon points of great and surpassing interest it indulges in platitudes, more objectionable than silence. We look in vain for a clear ring ing declaration against monopoly power wrongly applied; where wo expected to hear a clarion voto of defiance we only hear the cackle of an antiquated hen; perhaps the third clause is all that the leaders wore permitted to say. The sixth clause comes with peculiar grace from a party who cannonized Jackson, the founder of the srioils system. There is a great deal, in the platform that though good is not new, yet it is good for all that. We believe the Democracy in earnest in the admirable doctrine of the fourth clause: that is good doc trine call it what you will: the eighth clause is also sound politi cal sense. The ninth is simple "taffy," so is the. tenth: the elev enth is a good statement: wo hope that will prevail, and also t!ie thirteenth: the democrats always have discountenanced any whin ing, skulking, midnight offbrt to ostracise men that preferred to worship God .as" they ''believed was right, arid as"a party, deserve credit therefor." .As . whole, the Oregon Democracy have a fair platform. 'Tis wide enough fo tha candidates to stand on, -.md has soma good, sound timber in it. The great merit of it in our eyes -.a -its omission to iug in Jefferson and all that 'OS busi ness, sis Democratic conventions are prono to do. Tiio frmners of the platform before us showed sa gacity, .jthere. .If they, had put a good plank in -the platform rela tive to Uic necessity of radroad corporations returning forfeited land grants to their rightful own ers, we are of the opinion that they would stand a better show to capture rx-otes in this cud of the state. As this part of the com monwealth was entiiely ignored in the matter of nominations it was the least ,they might doto throw us that much by way of rec ognition. JUut, probably, it is not of much "consequence. Quid Coinage. Tne limited amount of small gold coined was long a source of inconvenience, to the general public- It was iterated and reiterated that the demands of the country require a greater percentage of the gold coinage to be of smaller de nomination. Of late years the matter has been better done. From the organization of the Mint in 1792 to the close of the last fiscal year, there -was coined in gold the sum of $1,211,837,116, of which 935,100,000 was in double eagles. Thus over 77 per cent, of our gold coinage is in pieces that are practically of littlu use as current money for every day transactions.- Tho 20 gold coin is of service to bankers where there is no paper money in circu lation, because it is convenient to handle and counts up rapidly ia largo transactions. Tho next smallest coin is the eagle, or S10 piece. Of this, description, 110, 119,520 had been coiued to tho close of the last fiscal year. Hero is nearly 10 per cent, more in a coin that is of comparatively little use alongside of. papjr money of the same ; .denomination. This leaves only about 13 per cent, of small gold for ordinary transac tions of business, yithin the pasttwo or three years more at tention has been paid to the coin- ago of gold pieces under S20, in response to a popular demand, as voiced through the press. Tue apologetic declaration is mado from Washington that the President '-vetoed tho Chinese bill j without any especial reference x tho future of his party. It was unnecessary to telegraph that fact any more than it would be to let us know that rain is wet, or that cork will float. Tho occasion, -was one of these where the good eff tho country and the good of the party went together, and what -would help the one would redound to the credit of the other.
