"r'C- f - "- F-r&V!?y ' -fmagS? SCIjc JJaxlt stoiian. ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY MARCH. 30, 1882 J. F. UALLOE.IX ..Editor. "Sarkazzum." Profound contempt for igno rance and stupidit' has probably never been more delicately insinu ated in polite -languago than upon the occasion of-a -recent xicquittal by which -a San- Francisco jury let loose upon society a murderer whose criminality the evidence brought forward in the course of his trial had left no doubt upon tho mind of the Judge. His honor, before dismissing the jurors from duties which, in his opinion, they had so ill-fulfilled, addressed them with ironical courtesy in the following terms, "brentiemen ot Uie jury ihe in tellectual process by the aid of which you have arrived at this re markable verdict is one, if I may venture to say so, altogether be yond my powers of cmprehen sion. But, gentlemen, I conceive it to be my duty upon so memor able an occasion as tho present, to call your attention to the fact that the right to pardon criminals is re served, by the law of this country, to the Govornor of the State for the time being as one of the most precious privileges of his exalted office. This being so, you will ex cuse me, gentlemen, for express ing ray humble opinion to the effect that it is scarcely altogether correct, or even decorous, in a common jury arbitrarily to arro gate this prerogative to itself. I speak, of course, under correction, and with all imaginable deference to your superior natural sagacity and legal knowledge. My appre ciation of the naturo and character of your functions, being that of a mere lawyer, is not likely to have much in common with your own. Such as it is, however, gontlemcn, you. are extremely welcome to it. I have the honor to wish you pro tracted exemption from the cares and responsibilities of tho jury box!" ,- . The Baltimore American come3 near the truth when it says: Blaine has never been nominated for tho presidency, but yet he has always led the victorious column. It is because ho. has been and is now the truest exponent of repub lican ideas, as they are held by the vast multitudes of American voters. He lias that fine tact, that intuitive sense of what Amer icans feel and think, th.it make tho true leader. He says at the right moment the thing 50,000,000 people are dumbly thinking, and says it in a way that goes to the heart like tho proclamation of Napoleon on the eve of battle. Both ho and Conkling are in re tirement one because of tho na tional calamity of Garfield's assassi uation; tho other because of his own stupendous folly as a leader, resigning for "a vindication." But one is still the leader of vic tory, and the other tiro leader of defeat. A Washington despatch says: Certain settlers at Juneau, Alaska, having made application to the secretary of the treasury for arms to protect themselves against na tives, the request was referred to the secretary of war. It was found upon investigation, arms could only be supplied if it appeared that they were needed for protec tion of government property. The postoffico at Juneau consti tutes the only government proper ty at that place, and Acting Post master Geneneral Hatton, has ac cordingly mado application for -arms to be used" in protection of the postoffice, so as to enablo in habitants of the town to defeud tne'mBelves. Wiseacees in politics archeard from up the country.. 'Tis time enough to commence developing tho spirit of prophecy. What they don't know about politics is not worth knowing.
