An article on Ingersoll in last Sunday's issue, in which that indi vidual was alluded to as a plagia rist, started a discussion in relation to the merits of the uhole'system of religious teaching. "Wc have received several communications, which are carefully filed away, as being of the class that, like wine, improve with age. The charge against Ingersoll, of plagiarism, is only a side show in this circus: we are all plagiarists as far as that is cencerned: the ideas in this article are all token from another man: every one has to get his ideas from his fellow-humans: no one that wc know of, ever came into this bright world with a stock of knowledge on hand. He had to beg or bor row or steal what he knows from his neighbors, and unless he arro gates too much praise 'to himself, he is not to be too severely scored for his efforts to get hold of a few ideas and thoughts that the human race have had in common, from King David down to David Davis. But the matter of free thought is a world-embracing one. As a general thing, men ought to grow wiser as they grow older. Some do. Others do not. All who have prof ited by the garnered experiences of time who have mingled much with, and learned the ways of, the world, the flesh and the devil, and of the church, also; and who, abo've all, are actuated by that spirit of kindness and charity that should prevail in our dealings with our fellow beings, all of this class will agree with us that a bl nd and un reasoning opposition to the estab lished religious methods for the world's redemption, is not wise. One may believe all systems of religion 'to be false as the out growth of barbarism, -or as founded in the ignorance aud superstition of man's undeveloped nature, and yet he cannot intelligently deny that there is a necessity for religious restraint over the minds andactions of men ofsome men, of many- men not all, perhaps; but of such a large percentage of the race as to make tho mainte nance of the church, in its varied forms of worship, an essential if not the main prop of society. It may be, and is held by most free thinkers, that5 if all religious -teaching was supplemented by proper instruction in the laws of health, sobriety, and right living that if science was made to take the place of faith and levelation better general results would follow than are now witnessed. This is extremely doubtful, for the reason that the average man lacks the ca pacity for philosophical application of the truths of science. The les sons of nature and the laws of life are nothing to him. Ho can only bo reached, and that often indiffer ently, through hi? fears; or stimu lated to right action through hope of reward. It is with this somewhat seriously damaged article of hu manity the average lot, which most people will concede is a bad lot that society has to deal, for it is the lower stratum of this disa greeable average that causes socie ty the most trouble. He who derides all church influ ences and religious teacings would hardly caro to reside in a commu nity where there were no auch influences and teachings unless ho were permitod to select his neighbors, which would scarcely be possible. Churches and grog shops may exist s-ide by side; and yet most persons who take no stock in either, would rather the two should exist together than that the grog shops should have it all to them selves. It is only the inconsiderate and unreasoning infidel the one with but one idea, and that badly demoralized who would p'ull down thp churches and destroy at a blow the pious faith of their de vout membership. The human race is still in its in fancy is only beginning to walk. It needs all tho helps and encour agements of religion as well as science to keep it from stumbling: and they are not always sufficient. Although groping amid shadows it is ever reaching out after and struggling for the light. And it will find it sometime the true light the rigctric light of Wis dom. The taw of eternal progress is graven in the heart of the rock cf the plant of man. All life is barbed with a divine purpose ever penetrating and reaching for ward holding fast to that which it gains, and never going back wards that is, in its entirety and ultimate. And so we welcome all helps to growth, spiritual or intellectual care not whence they come whether from saint or sinner, Jew or Gentile, Pagan or Christian. He is our brother who loves his fellow men, and- would do unto them as he would that they should do unto him who strives by word and act to so live that when death shall have placed its icy seal upon his lips,- the fragranco of many a tender memory will permeate the hearts of those who knew him best. In Memoriam. The thousands who have read his works with pleasure and de light will feel a personal loss in the news that Henry "W. Long fellow died at Boston last Friday morning. "Were those whose hours of pain he has solaced, and whose hours of leisure beguiled, to give but a dime, each, he would have the proudest monument of any in the list of illustrious Ameri can dead. Born in 1807, he, for half a century contributed a wealth of poetic literature to his country, and every line of it chaste, enno bling and refined. His great co temporary William Cullen Bry ant passed away, full of years and gracious fame, in 1878; of the trio of American poets, but one now remains, Whittier, and his advancing years weigh heavily upon him. To those three American poets our country owes much of its pres ent literary ability. "When it was fashionable to sneer at American authors and ape the sickly senti mentality of Byron and the soft nothings of "L. E. L.," Bryant, Longfellow and Whittier found in thp woods and waters of their own land inspiration that was breathed in tho loftiest numbers. "Evan geline," "Thanatopsis," "Hia watha,"' will long endure, and "Tales of a Wayside Inn," com pare favorably with the polished English of Tennyson. Of the dead poet's works it may be said, as he himself said of a brother peet: "The pages of thy book I read, and as I close each one; my heart responding.ever 8aid,'Serv ant of God, well Jone.'"
