rescue in "defence" of Christianity.
Ingersoll's articles are readable.
"y.hat is new is not good, what, is
good-is not "new; yet they un
readable. The irreverent Robert
argues about the Christian relircon
like any other paid attorney argu
ing the cause of a criminal .elieti;,
against his conviction. He picks
out a good deal that is shaky in
the old Testament and some things
that are not tenable in the New and
argues that the Christian religion
is alie, a sham, a monstrous fraud:
and unworthy the"belief or support
of-thinking men. The upholders
of infidelity are fortunate in their
ch'atnpior.; did the truths that
Christ taught depetid to-day, upon
the feeble rejoinder of the two
men who-uttempt to answer him,
it would indeed be bad for the
millions who hold their simple
faith in the doctrin.'S'of the cruci
fied Redeemer as being above
and beyond anything that this
world can give or take away.
Ingersoll's arguments are spe
cious, his opponents weak; his
pleas are cumiing, their defense
like a broken sieve; his- thoughts
are well expressed, their words
dome like raw recruits' firing in
each others faces. If the' matter
depended on the book on our desk,
any one would say after reading
it, "this man is right; the Chris
tian religion is ahumbug." It is. a
matter of . , regret that Messrs
Black and Fisher, in conceiving
the idea that Ingersoll deserved
an answer, did iiof or could not
get; up something that would in
deed be an answer, and not a
mumbling whine. This is an age
of infidelity, of doubt and ques
tion. It is not that people don't
want to believe, nor- that they
don't want to be saved; but; we are
passing through a cycle of disbe
lief, and if, as the current of infi
delity rushes bysotne few -.nay be
found who go with it, that need re
flect no discredit upen the many
who simply throw out an extra
anchor and cling to the ancient
faith that has. done so .much for
them.
Ingersoll1 is' a clever plagiarist.
Any man can see where he gets
his ideas. ' He has read all the
works of radical thinkers from
Arian to Rousseau, and dressing
up these stolen children of fancy
in the racy diction of the day cx-
' hibfts'thern as his own offspring,
and thousands, -read ami admire
; Jus-panted, words; ignorant of the
' fact thafe-she. is nothing more or
less than!a clever literary, pirate
. who talks, that way because it pays.

devil in, who have used the Chris
tian religion for a cloak to cover
their own wickedness; it need

think of a man,- who, going from
