Cash Vailuc r Missionaries, j The popular estimate of foreign missions is that it costs a dull ir so I send twenty-five cents to forc'gn lands, and that the same zeal, la- I bor and money expended upon pagans at home would yield much larger results. Dickens' travesty of the missionary cause in '-Bleak House" the flannel jackets and moral pocket-handkerchiefs and Borriaboola-sha mission has been generally accepted as a measure of the wisdom, the disinterestedness and the usefulness of those who bel:eve in this method of extend ing Ciiri tianity and improving the world's morals. Alter a trial of over sixty years the missionaries have sometliinjr to say, and in a recently? published treatise have gathered together testimony to' the practical value and efficiency of their woi k. Tuet put it on the same bisis as that from which it is assailed, unci main tain that in dollars and cents the system has already vindicated It self. To,th'e question, "Do missions pay?" they say "yea." They have yielded large returns to the kuowl edgo ot mankind its geography, 'geology, philosophy, hiitory, gen eral literature, medic il science, music, commerce and the arts. Noted travelers and sc enlists ars.c.tid in favor of their indeb tedness to the researches and dis coveries, of missionaries. Carl Bitter, the famous geographer, says be could not have written his great work without the aid of the Missionary Herald, in which "the reader must look to find the most valuable documents, that have ever bpen sent over by any socie ty." Professor William D. Whit- ney, of Yalo College, the famous authority on language, very em phatic in admitting his "indebted ness to the value pC missionaries to science, and the obligations whichthe American Qriental So ciety and othet . Oriental societies 'feel toward them. . Richard H. Dana, who recently died, Iho author of "Two Irears Before the Mast," says of the Sandwich Isla'id missiens: "Every mission family' was a source of civilizing influence; each mission house a dispensary, and each mis sionary a school-teacher. 1 ha e seen in their homo- collections oi animals, plant, shells and lionets, valuable to science, and they have often pre-crved the best, some times the only, records of vocanic eruptions, earthquake and meteor ological observations." Many other missionaries hae attained in heathen lands crreat reputation and usefulness as doc tors, sotiu of them by t.ijhing modern medicine to the na'ives, others by substituting scientific meMical treatment for the supr . stitious practices which constitutes the healing art. Thpy hft-c csuh lished secular institutions of learn ing, like the college at Beirut and the Roberts" College in Con stantinople, and they challenge comparison with any other similar work for the same period of time in civilizing tho people with whom they have como into contact. If it does not pay qarti-rly dividends in cash, they claim that the returns, if reckoned by decades and half centuries, will prove it the best -paying investment on the earth.
