Sprague divorce case will he qui
etly and peacefully settled and
the prurient imaginations of thou .
sands of salacious people must -go
untickled. But though the
papers announce such, one can
not very well help wondering
whether it is in accordance with
the soundest public policy that
suitors for divorce, even in the
Sprague Station of life, should he
permitted to enter into a formal
agreement for divorce, as the
parties in thib cae .ire reported to
have done. In most Slates the
obtaining of divorces by collusion
is expressly forbidden by statute;
and in no State where the ad
ministration of -justice has d
vanced'beyond the code of Lynch,
would a self-respecting court grant
a divorce where collusion was be
lieved to eist. 'Yet the Spragnet,
by their counsel, not only agree
upon divorce and the terms there
of, but tippn the grounds which
shali be regarded hy the court in
granting the decree; and it doesn't
seem to enter the heads of eithei
parties or counsel that the court
before -which the case is peiid-ng
will hesitate for a moment to in
dorse this usurpation of its func
tions. Perhaps they are; right. . They
probably know better than the
- outside public can what a Rhode
Island court can be expected to
do. Cerfaihly, if thoy had -any
doubt on the point they would
make some effort to conceal their
plans and intentions, instead of
taking ihe .Associated Press, and
through iff the whole world into
their confidence? 'Cut nf 'they are
right, irVthe Rhode Island courts
are the nonentities they are as
sumed to be, the dimutie New
England States.' will soon have all
the divorce business it can attend
to, acd Indiana will cease to be
the Mecca of mismated. For,
even in Indiana) the courts insist
upon going through the form of
deciding divorce c.iscs and refuse
to let the parlies agree on all the
details.
A Little Mistaken.

had done something besides talk
ing, picnicking and dancing, they
would have been'in full enjoy
ment of all that traffic .many years
ago, but now it has passed from
them forever. The only way of
again getting that trade into the
hands of citizens of the Territory
is by the building of a largo "town
at Gray's Harbor or by drawing it
to Seattle, as. proposed bv the
Puget Sound & Gray's Harbor
Railroad Company. In either
event it will take more than talk
to accomplish the desired end.
