Will.un. Hi- Farm! r pub Irslies a Tt.t ni" its li-!iinpifiit s.il). " scriber. Whether it has a right to do that is not quite clear to us. ,No man likes to have bis name aud amount of .indebtedness par-ade"iii-.the" paper, and-"'w6"- think that the meat of thepaper's delin quent subscribers thus published will, when they think of the editor think this way. To him I owed an obligation. But be. unluckily saw lit. To publMi it to all the nahon, So be and I arc more than quit. The list aggregates Suj, and the Farmer says "there are 'hundreds more whose turn will come in due time unless we hear from them." This whole matter of delinquent subscribers is-in every way inter esting, to the man who publishes a newspaper. The Willamette Far mer no doubt feels aggrieved any one would in like circumstan ces to invest brains, work, worry, money, pay for everything, even the mailing of the papers, and then get nothing. In another column of the same issue of that paper we find this: "How would you like to sell your wheat, a bushel in a place, to thousands of people, all over this wide region, the greater part of whom you do not know, pay the freight in. advance and wait until they choose to pay you?'' The same complaint has been made ever since the first newspa per was printed, and will be until the millenium; when mankind will be so guileless and pure that news papers will no longer be a neces sity any more than churches, schools, sewing machines, and other adjuncts of progress. Ev ery nowspaper that has any circulation- at all, has on its subseri.itioii list the names.of a few individuals who are fcelf justified in any course they may take with a newspaper publisher, and aggrieved at an course that he may tnke to secure Ijtmsolf. The flimsiest excuse be comes invested with the strongest attributes of justification anil sound reason. They form about ten per cent, of the subscribers and afford vorry enough to anyone who makes worry of it, to make up "for their lack of numbers. The moral sus ceptibilities of such men are some what blunted to begin with; and in the ond they get tnad if the newspaper is s-ent and payniAiit asked for it, and thej- get. mad if it is stopped. In Mich caes, 'a .j long as they a re going to gel mad anyhow, the best way is to slop the paper, look pleasint, fc;iy noth ing, stand the loss like a little man, and reflect grimly upon the one bright and shining fact that in that far-off happy land where all good priuters and long suffering newspaper men go, they will nor meet any one who on f-arth beat them ojt of their hard-earned monoy. B.it we do not think that our Portland contemporary has adopted a sensible plan in "pub lishing" delinquents. They are not. worth blowing up. Any rmn who is so lost to shame, so blind to the commonest principles of honesty as to take a paper and re fuse to; pay for it, is beyond all help. Hisjiame is strickeu for ever from the muster rol!s.of duty, it does not appear on the lists of manhoed: he is content to slip down the back stairs of Time to an oblivion of musty forgetfulness, and when his brief candle goes out we "know not where is that Promethian flame that can its light relume." A Hardship on the Whole Public Of the Columbia bar, G. H. At . kinson, in the Oregonian says: Every man has an interest in it for the safety of life and property. Forty yearsago the public rumor was that peril attended every ves sel in its attempt 10 cross the bar ."!. rT t-- - i ,- . u.v V.WUIHU1U. ira leaving u.is- ton in 18J7 for the vovage to Ore- gon two dangers wero foreshad owed, viz: tho passage around ,.1 Cnpr Horn iiml tlic C'llunidi.i riv I ?ar. The rumor was a hardship on a few persons forty years ago. It was one factor then th.it came nearly depriving the United States of Oregon. Now it is a hurcLliip on the whole pub lic, and we may add to tho repub lic, itself. The Columbia drains an area unuiilu that, ot im'i! Britain or France, and of gn atc-r natural resources thin cither. Its outlet ought not to be made a bug bear. Our Tide Land. in writing up the desirability of Oregon as a point for emigra tion, little bus been said of the e.7 tensive tide lands that indent this coast in Clatsop ami Tillamook counties. In this county and in the immediate' vicinity of this est., there are thousa.-.ds of actc, t'l this class of hinds y'w in bodies convenient to great forests, that cover all the high ground around the bays. The commonly received notion that tide lands are too wet and swampy for use, is wholly er roneous. They are abo e the or dinary high tides, are only under water two or three times in a year and are then only for a few hours. So far as concerns the crop of h.iy on these lands, they are no more affected by the water than these on other lands are affected liy a heavy rain of a few hours duration. Immense crops of hay are pro duced on these lands, without any cultivation whatever. Two, and sometimes three tons of grass to the acre are mown on these grounds where none has been sown. Large numbers of cattle run at large on theie lands all the year, round, -and do as well as the best fed stock raised in other juris of the state. There are no better lands for the stock raiser on the coast. And not . only are these tide lands valuable lor stock-raising and dairying purposes, but with liule expenditure, they can be made to produce line crops of vegetable--, oats, etc. The proof of this is afforded by the prodtiLt of tracts now under cultivation which have been diked, the cost of tlio dikes being but little in ex cess of that of a good substantial fence. These lands will soon be appreciated at their frue value and will be as eager! v sought after as anv in the state. Ouu up-e.ountry exchanges who are getting up sun Iry tree items we wmil 1 remind that there are trees in this county 300 feet high, one hundred feet to the first limb and mpering in graceful symmetry. fiiis they are not to forget.
