Tho Yaquina, which came in lastWednesday night from an ex ploring expedition, -brings news of several isolatpd und self-sustaining little" cotafiifirirticsSiHdepcB(lejTt people who .are linng along the Chehalis river" for a distance of seventy miles. It is, we are in formed, a virgin country, entirely pastoral in its surroundings and characteristics, and as remote from the ordinary lines of travel and communication as though it were some lone island of the Pacific. The land is of unequaled fertility, the timber of sturdiest growth, and the resources of the country give promise, when developed, of causing this section to be wealth' and prosperous in an eminent de gree. -'Tis now some fi e or six years ago since a steamer first wen; up the Chehalis. and we be lieve the Yaquina is the largest craft that ever visited those shores. This vessel, which left "Astoria about nine oays ago, made n brief stay at Chehalis City at tho en trance to Gray's Harbor, and then went inland some sixty miles, find ing a good channel and safe land ings as far as she n ent; the cistern limit was reached at Montesano, where there is twenty feet of water and an apparently safe channel extending up far into the interior. There are no buoys, nor anything else to indicate the channel, but soundings taken show no diiliculty in navigating those waters. To some of the dwellers in that sec tion the sight of a steamer was a new s'ensatioti; many of the young er residents having never seen a steamboat before. Though the cost of running the Yaquina (she having a crew of sixteen men) will not at present justify an attempt to build-up a ttrade with this sec tion, yet it is certain that a smaller schooner would make handsome returns on the amount invested by making regular trips up the river. The people are mostly engaged in farming, stock raising .and the pro ducts of the dairy. By reason of vicinage, location, and feasibility of access, the trade of that country of, the future belongs to Astoria, and a little eiFort on the part of those most interested can easily secure it. 'Tis a country that will, once opened up, increase in wealth and population. " From Hoquiam, along to Montesano, Sharon and other places, is a stretch of land that, when it becomes generally known is open for settlers at the government price of SI 25 an acre, will shortly be taken up. The pioneers now living there are but as "tho first low rush of waves where soon shall roll tho human sea," "Some flowers of Eden we still inherit, but the trail of the serpent is over them all.' The Northern Pacific railroad has a cinch on some of tho finest of this fair domain, and, having been granted "in demnity lands" by act of Congress, has secured thousands of acres in alternate sections. Oxi: great 6et back to the full measure, of success to which our public schools should attain is caused by the desire to have pu pils learn too much: to pay more j regard to the capacity than the lability. "Evcrv educational re former," says the Chicago Times, "desires to add something to tho course of instruction pursued in the public schools." Xo on e, ho w- evpr, suggests the propriety of taking anything out!" All "are ap parently unconscious of the fact that only 20 per cent of the pupils in the public schools ever pass be yond the primary grades, and that only 1-J- per cent ever get be yond the grammar grades. Fully three-fourths of all the children who enter tho public schools leave before they have acquired any thing but a rudimentary know ledge of reading, spelling, writing B. B. It would bo well for the persons ho desire to add anything to the present course of study to designate what they vt ould leave out to make room for it. Would they deny to poor children the only opportunity most of them will ever have to learn to read easy words, to write their own names and to reckon up their own wages? It is absolutely necessary to" curtail or omit altogether in struction in reading, writing or simple arithmetic in order to make room for any now branch of study. Devotiug the first forty minutes in each day .to a. new studv would amount to reducing the time now given to practical branches at least one-fifth, as the first morn ing hour is worth much more than any other in school work. As. a large proportion of the pupils in the primary grades attend school but half tho day, one-third of all their time would be spent in re ceiving ethical instruction. BOOK STORE.
