Up country papers are talking of some "rival company" that is going to build a railroad down the north bank of tho Columbia. Wo are in receipt of invitations to the masquerade ball which No. l's in tend giving on the 14th inst. Those in chargo aro determined to mako it a success. The Multnomah county clerk's fees and emoluments for 'SI- aggro gated 2,345. During that year the sheriff of that county recoivod a total of 11,363. Lots 1 and 2 in block 1G have been sold for 81,500. This salo shows quite a marked improvement in values of Astoria real estate, having been sold one year ago for $750. The fact that a Humboldt, Cal, man, in digging for clams, brought up some fine oysters, leads the Times to very naturally infer that there is a bed of oysters in that vicinity. Great preparations aro being made by the committee for tho coming nia querade to be given by Astoria Engine Company No. 1. Professor Roos, of Portland, will provide the music. In landing at the now dock at Fort Stevens at ordinary low tide, tho steamer thumps where two years ago there were two fathoms of wator. The sand has built out over 100 yards. Thollwaco Navigation company are having; their new tug "salted,". technically speaking. All space be tween her timbers and lining down to about eighteen inches below the wa ter line is to be filled with salt. In the course of time the wood becomes thoroughly impregnated with the salt and effectually resists decay. atasqneraftc Costumes for Rent. Railroad Contract Yesterday, cays the Oregonian of the 30th ult., tho Oregon Railway and Navigation Company concluded nego tiations with J. 1J. David, 0. D. Bates, R. JL Steel and others, conipo3int;tho newly organized Oregon Construction Company, and awarded tliein a con tract foi constructing the railroad grade from Pendleton to a point near hx Grande, a distance of fifty-seven miles. This includes tho heavy work over tho Blue mountains. As origin ally surveyed there were four tunnels, but the company now think they will be able to get through with one, which will be less than four hundred feet long. The contract leouires that the work bo completed by the 1st of Octo ber, 1882. Operations will begin im mediately. Puzzle. . You will find me in Astoria, a little tiny thing. Can it be possible We are in receipt of a large col lection of almanacs. What seems to bo needed by pedestrians most is an appropriate form of words by which Christian peo ple might suitably express themselves on occasions of great spiritual provo cation. Mr. Eells, writing from the Sko- horaish Indian Reservation, Washing ton Territory, siys: On Smidiy, New Year's day, wo had a Sabbath school, a wedding, preaching services, bap tism, reception of two members into tho church, communion and a birth all within about thirteen hours. A dispatch to the Oregonian from San Francisco Ia3t night states that Chas. F. McKim, who is iu tho em ploy of tho O. It. & N. Co, comes to Portland for the purpose of superin tending the construction of their im mense depot, the plan3 and specifica tions for which are in his possession. Tho dopot is to be 500 by COO feet in sizc,Jand will cost about $1,500,000. An Olympia correspondent of tho Oregonian says that the strango course takon by tho late legislature in refus ing to pass the pilot bill, and even go ing so far out of their way as to repeal tho old pilot law, is the subject of general commont and is likely to be very damaging to their commercial in terests in the future. That it was meant to throw good American money into tho hands of British Columbia seems now a foregone conclusion, and those who refuse to pass a good law on the subject will be well remembered beforo the next election. Colonel Cann received a letter this morning from W. P. Miller, warden of the Oregon penitentiary at Salem, says tho Seattle Chronicle, giving a full description of the two men who were hanged there one week ago for the murder of Reynolds. Warden Miller says that Sullivan had just served out a three-year sentence in tho peniten tiary for bnrglary committed in Mult nomah county, Oregon. Ho left tho penitentiary on tho 7th of tho present month. This was the larger man, whose left arm was gone. Tho smaller man, Howard, completed a two-year trm on the 28th of last November. Ho was sent up for grand larceny for two years. Both names given hero were aliases. Their real names we did not learn. Mrs. Twilight and 3Ir!.
