Under tho heading "More Big Colts," the Oregonian rings in some extraneous and supplementary remarks from a Yamhill correspondent regard ing the birth of triplets in the city of Amity. Capt. Mattson thinks now that it was the fault of Tenneut's Nautical almanac that ho lost his vessel. A little matter of 300 miles, more or less, makes a difference in the loca tion of a vessel. The Standard attributes to tho announcement that a secret society of lathes has been organized in Washing ton, to be known as the "Guardian Angels," for the purpose of reforming and otherwise looking after Congress men, the immnse Oregon crop of Re publicans anxious to succeed M. Thi is one of those profligate grants made by congress for which tho public has received no equivalent, nor ever will. Oregon is suffering from half a dozen huge jol3 of this kind, which have ab sorbed in the aggregate millions of acres, but from which not the slightest bonefit has ever been received by gov ernment or people. Every other day tho name occupies space in the local columns. Up rirer reports Bhow cold weath er at every point. All d ij' yesterday 'it was a nipping and an eager air;' the thermometer at eleven i n. stood at 20 abovo zero, the stars had a steely glitter, and tho wind wa3 from tho N. W. Inquiry into tho recent alleged shaughaiug of sailors of tho Indiana show that it was the evident intention of the men to jump tho vessel if they got a chance, and that there was no intent to coerce any of them. Cap tain Morrison has them on board and will, we learn, have no trouble-in get ting them to go back to duty without resorting to rigid discipline or punish ment. Tho social at Capt. Merryman's last Friday evening was fully up to the usual good time enjoyed by those who attend those deservedly popular gatherings. The various religious organiza tions of Astori i deservo praiso for their efforts in behalf of social intercourse among the citizens. The Oregon Statesman aays: "A party of engineers surveying a route for the Canadian-Pacific Railway across tho Rocky mountains have been su completely cut off from tho world in tho wilderness, that it vias only a few days ago that they learned of the death of President GarCold." Bar pilots tell us that on boarding inward bound vessels for tho last six months, one of the first questions is, "How is Garfield!" and when told of hi3 death the next remark is ono consigning his assassin to eternal perdition. Wo learn from what can 'only be considered tho best authority, says the Walla Walla Journal, that under tho orders of Mr. Villard, one new steamer is being outfitted, aud two others are being repaired for service in the in terest of the O. R. & N. C3. on the upper waters of tho Columbia. It is aaid that ono will navigate above Priest Rapids, another will work abovo Kettle Falls and a third will navigate the tributaries. The immense mining and timber regions of tho Upper Co lumbia are at last attracting the atten tion of practical capitalists. Owing to low water in the Wil latietto and Columbia rivers, steam ers carry very light cargoes; and only 5,000 sacks of potatoes aro sent down oach stream when they could carry 20,000, with plenty of water. If Port land would stand aside and let Astoria bo our sea port, Oregon products could be sent off much moro expedi tiously Willaineti e Farmer. Let Port landers improve on Yillard's advice about buiidmg warehouses at Puget Sound, and with greater consistency and belter judgment accept tho inevi table by coming to Astoria. lire. Twilight and llrs. Illsley have iaseu cnarge oi merioneer liestauranr, which has been thoroughly reuovatcd and refitted. Mrs. Illsley has charge of the cuisine. Good coffee a specialty." Heartless Villainy. In an account of the bigamy and desertion caso to which wo gave publi city a few days ago, tho Standard says that at a respectable boarding house in Portland, Mr. James A. Lawrence and wife formed the acquaintance of Miss Nellie Sloan, a modest appear ing girl of 19 years, daughter of ex police Captain Sloan, who was living there. About a year ago Mr. and Mrs. Laurence began housekeeping and took Miss Sloan with them to board. Secretly Sir. Lawrence made love to the young boarder, and on the lGth inst. married her at Astoria, tak ing steamer immediately for San Fran cisco. In order to quiet suspicion and give themselves ample time to escape, Miss Sloan pretended sho wa3 going to Salem, but instead went to Astoria and registered under tha namebf Miss Miller, and Mr. Lawrence told his confiding wifo that ho had to make a trip to San Francisco for his employ ers, but instead .got off tho State of California at Astoria, registered at the Occident hotel as P. F. Squires and was married under that namo to Miss Sloan who gavo hor right name by Rev. J. V. Milligan, in timo to take tho same steamer for San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrencevame to Port" land about three years ago, and formed the acquaintance of a large circle and were universally liked. At first Mr. Lawrence was employed as a teacher at the Bishop Scott Grammar School, and may be recollected by many as the organist at Trinity Church up to six months ago, and at the time of his elopement Was employed as a clerk in the lighthouse department under Col. Gillespie. In appearance he was short and stout, but otherwise good looking parting his hair in the middle. The wife he leaves behind him is a lady of much culture and refinement, and up to the time of his villainy lived hap pily with him, nover suspecting him of duplicity oven after he had failed to go to the Palace hotel as ho said he would. On New Year's day Mrs. Von Bolton, of London, mother of the for saken wife who is now here visiting her presented lier with 300 and Lawrence took that with him, even leaving his poor wife, to pay for a diamond ring which he presented to Miss Sloan as a token of engagement. Miss Sloan also supplied herself with 3,000 which was in tho bank in her name, half of which being her father's tho proceeds of the salo of a piece of property left by the late Mrs. Sloan, tho runaway's mother, Lawrence left a few debts behind him, but his for saken wife has made arrangements to satisfy all creditors. Broken hearted, and her home 'desolated by a wretch, Mrs. Lawrence will soon leave with her mother for her old home m Eng land. She is well rid of the wretch, and we hope that the punishment of her base -husband's crime may soon overtako him and be meted out with no unsparing hand. Guiteau's Opinion. A "Washington dispatch says: When Guiteau arrived at the jail after tho verdict, his pale, haggard face indicated great depression, mingled with anxiety and fear. The jail officials remarked that he was more depresspd than at any time since his arraignment. To Warden Crocker ho remarked: "The verdict startled me, but I was not surprised. Judge Cox's charge was a very fair one, with a single exception. He did not dwell with sufficient force on the recent decision of the Now York court of appeals. Had he done so the jury would have acquitted me. Judge Porter's bitter speech had too much impression on tho jury. I saw the effect and henco was somewhat prepared for the ver dict." "Do you have any fears that you will die on the scaffold," asked the reporter. "I am in the hands of tho Lord," replied the prisoner, "and I have no apprehensions. Life is but a span. It'is appointed to all men once to die, and no man will die beforo his appointed time. No man can say to-day that he-will bo alive to-morrow." Guiteau expressed the hope that the court would grant him a new trial. He believed he would have the assistance of a prominent Bal timore lawyer and the question of lunsdiction would come up. After the trial Judge Cox was asked if he was surprised that the jury returned a verdict so soon. He" said he could not say he was. The jury was an intelligent -one and the case had been too plainly stated lor them to do otherwise. The inordinate vanity of the pris oner had led to this result. He woujd not say what he thc.ught of the prospect of a new trial. For Sale. An English retriever, well trained, and invaluablo to any one wanting a good hunting dug.
