Small pox is spreading all over the Eastern and Southern states. The grain shipping business is lively at the O. R. & K. Co'a dock. It brings a laugh every time Dearin gives his. "chin music." It is rumored that Gen. Pope will soon be assigned tho command of the division of the PaciGc. Forepaugh's circus in distress at Liberty Hall last night was greeted .with roars of laughter, The wreck of the Harvest.Home was sold last Thursday afternoon to Martin Ford for 300. Judgo McKenzie, the man who -signalled to Gen. Sherman to. "Hold the fort," died oil the 16th. The- boys did even better last night than they did on Thursday. 'Tis a good show and. will bo better. The County of Bute, Alert, Aca dian and Clydebank went up the river yesterday. The Carnegie came down. Capt. Hustler gives notice that tho-ddenide; begins, discharging to day. She has 10,000 sacks of Bait aboard. The boys in the gallery help pay iKe show's salary, but that does'nt jus tify them in- kicking up such a row as they do. ThtfLevi G. Burgess is discharg ing railroad iron at Flavel's dock; it makes the dock look liko a demoralized railroad depot. On the 23d inst., articles of the Soattle, Puget Sound and Gray's Har fcor railroad company were filed at Seattle. The object is to build a rail road, from Seattle to Gray's harbor. We informed that the Sisters of Charity in charge of St. Mary's hos pital intend to build an addition to hpir nmrwrtv this season. This -speaks well for tho success of that e cellent institution. In the German language there will be divine services at the B.iptit church to-morrow, afternoon, at 2 o'clock, by Rev. John Gantcnbein, pastor of the reform church, Portland. AJ1 Germans are cordially invited. At 12, midnight, Saturday, in New Tacoma a cannon is fired, tho 'saloons immediately close; the boys go home because they can't go anywhere else, and leave the world in possession of the temperance folks for twenty iour hours. , -r-Owing to the increase of his Tianking business and a desire to make 'Bssnrance doubly sure, Mr. Case has bought a safe of latest mako and finest quality. He is now doing extensive banking business in the way of de posits, drafts and transfers. TheEdderside wilT discharge 750 tons of tiri plate at this place. This is, we believe, the largest importation of this metal'that has ever come here at one time. The ball was comfortably Oiled Inst evening to seo the second oerfurnmnco of the minstrels, whom, it was hoped had sufficiently; recovered from their sea sickness to stand the strain that an entire change nf pri-gramuie en titled. The opening olio contained seViTll new features, nlnl si u-i.il old one-. The "Sweet Ee!ina," l.y Gil bert was good, but siiiiiiihing fixsh would hive been better. Fur several years wo have heaitl the assurance that "my love for you can never, never die," but after one hears a song about one hundred and twenty times though encored as Gilbert was, he wants a change. The gags and puns were about average, and Dearin's "Biddy Magoon" was tho principal feature at his end of the lino. Miss Lottie Allen again gavo the jig that requires such lively playing on the part of the orchestra to satisfy her quick step, and Thompson brought in the "Old Black Jot." delineation pretty nell; his make tip is uood If the stage -were a little larger the jockey clg dancers c-mld do a good deal better; their dancing is good and is a leading feature of the performance. A ballad by Gus Miller and some amusing specialties by Gilbert, were followed by Dearin in his comical per formance on many instruments. He is a h"le show in himself and is the leading fe it tire of this troupe. The "Last Sensation" gave opportunity for 8i une first class circus business, and the character skutc.li of "Who Broku the Clock" closed the evening's entertainment. The troupe go to Portland on this morning's boat. They are north seeing, and will, n doubt do a goirtl business thtongh the interior. Gus Miller iu "Leaf by Leaf the Rose Fall," uas gnod last night. Something About a Field "Boom" Two Years Ago Blaine-The Bane of Oregon Newspapers. (From our Regular Correspondent.) Portland,. Jn. 24. Frank Pixley, editor of the Argo naut, writes to his p iper from New York as a bit of news that a syste matic boom is being worked up for Mr. Justice Field, of the Supieme bench, for tho Presidential nomination on tho Denuoratic ticket in 18S4,.aud announces Cyrus W. Field as the man ager. This will not be news to a num ber of prominent Democratic politi cians in Portland who are friendly to Judge Field. Unknown to tho rank and file of the party, agood sized boom was started in Oregon during the spring of 1880, under the direction of Colonel W. H. Effinger, with Mr. Barney Goldsmith as business man ager and Mr. A. Noltner, then editor of tho D lily Standard, as advertising agent, and it was successful in a meas ure. Although the Oregon delegation to Cincinnati was supposed to be solid for Tilden, but not instructed for him, live out of the six voted for Field. If there bad been any such contest as sprang up in the Chicago convention, they would have made a strong fight. But the Hancock cyclcne on the sec ond ballot swept everything before it, including the air castles luiilt hy the Webfoot delegates. Expenses of the boom they were about $3,000 were paid by Cyrus W. Field. The Beeds planted in 1880 will blossom in 1884.- Judge Field per sonally is very popular with all classes of Democrats in tho State as popular as any man occupying a station so far above the average citizen could hope to become. His record is spotless. A thorough organiz ition iu his behalf iill be .made, and 1 venture that he will receive the- six votes of Oregon in the next Democratic National Conven tion. This prediction is based on the fact that he is the strongest man for Pacific Coast States that workers in the ranks will have greater chance of preferment in the event of his elec tion, and that pride in having a man from one's own section will direct a majority of delegates to the State Con vention toward Judge Field. That Blaine will receive the solid vote of Oregon at the next Repub lican Convention, is generally admit ted. Every Republican newspaper in the State is outspoken in his favor, and it is a safe estimate that this is the sentiment of five-sixths of the voters. Those who will protest against his nomination are a few ultra Grant men and a few veterans who still worship the hero of Appomattbx; a few capital ists who favor continued 'Chiuese im migration and a handful of men a lit tle too good for this earth and not quite good enough for heaven, who al ways wail until they read the Spring field Republican before forming opin ions on national questions. Of this latter class, Bent. Killen, a well known lawyer, remarked: "They can never accomplish, anything because no two could agree on any oue proposi tion, but as a crowd, they make a nice, easy "tonic" for the party, and I reckon they do more good in the end than harm." Another disgrace has befallen Ore gon journalism. Personal abuso of their mother carried beyond limit, necessitated two young men to casti gate h publisher who probably did not know the meaning of an unfamiliar, horrible word which found its' way into the columns of the "Suuday Wel coino. The New Northnest is not blameless. For years its senior editor has not spared bitter words for those who disagreed with her on any subject, forgetting that in these attacks -jit in her battle for woman's rights-'sh'e descended from the high pedesta6f respect on which men place women, and besmeared a shield and armor which, except for .these undignified personalities, would have been kept bright in a worthy cause. In this par ticular instance the insult to Mrs. Dnniway was too great to be borne in silence. The people of Portland, and I may say the people of Oregon, are proud of thusa j urnals which are kopt clean, and givo all such hearty support. They hoped that the days of useless, uninteresting, senseless vituperation had passed; that the tragedy four years ago which caused the death of McDonald and the long imprisonment if his slayer which had a far more trifling beginning than last Sunday s disgrace would end the disreputable business; that editors would be able to discuss matters of real interest with out having honest motives impugned by contemporaries; that a man con ducting a newspaper would not forget that the public -demanded of him the sauio gentlemanly conduct required from lawyer, physician, or minister. I am glad to note that The Astorian during the later years of Mr. Ireland's management, and particularly under its present editorial direction, has been free from this bane of Oregon journalism.
