The ball at tho Scandinavian can nery to-morrow evening will be a pleasant affair. The Walla Walla was ashore last Friday at Double Bluff point, opposite Foulweather bluff. The Gen. Oanby yesterday towed a raft of 550.000 foot of logs from Buckeye to Knappton. .The Eddersido is at Brown & Go's dock, where sho will discharge tin, salt and cannery supplies. The Jockey twelve aro said to be tho finest thing in tho way of clog dancing ever seen on this coast. Thoro will be a social at J. D Merryman's to-morrow evening, un der the auspices of the M. E. Church. The gigantic troupe are on to day's steamer and if the vessel gets in in cood season will civo ft street parade. The Norwegian bark Alert has discharged 475 tons of coal at Gray's dock, and is now discharging ICO tons at-Flavel's. -r-The New Tacoma council havo levied a tax to' raise $5,000, the esti mated expense of the recent- small pox visitation. Tho Occident Packing company will commence making cans, tho first of the month. Fred. Davidson is su perintendent The greatest combination of first class minstrels that over visited this State will givo our citizens a rousing bill to-night Be on hand. Masquerade Costnme for Kent. Any special suit will be ordered by telegraph at the iowast ratw. Tho Vesuvius. Tho Vesuvius, 210 days from Phila delphia, with 1038 tons of iron for tho 0. R. and N. Co., arrived yesterday after many trials and tribulations. In an interview with Captt Call wo learn that up to the -lth of December, when he was within 488 mils of the Colunv b"a, he had good woither, and ex pected to mako a quick voyage though there was considerable sickness among the crow. .Several of his men who had shipped at Philadelphia had just come off East Indiamen, and the scurvy was still in their syatems. When they arrived off the bar ho was anxious to get in and proenre them medical attendance, the constant stand ing on and off and incessant exposure setting heavily upon them. When the condition of the crew rendered it ne&ssary for him to go to the Sound he was obliged to ship a fresh crew thero, and somo of the old crew whom he had to leave thero were so sick that their recovery was doubtful. The statement of the Oregonian that lie had been discharged by the owners of the vessel rather amuses tho Captain, as he had heard nothing of it. Ho will go up to Pnrtlinil witli his vessel to-day. Portland's Sensation A Couple. Runaway Tho steamer Columbia that went to sea last baturuay afternoon had on board a couplo that had been married in this city that morning by a promi nent clergyman of this city. Tho couple. who gave fictitious names, were noticeably perturbed, but nothing transpired of the nature of the affair till a few days afterward. Tho parties are well known residents of Portland. The man had a good position, was married and looked upon as a steady and sterling individual by all with whom ho .was brought in con tact. It was a terrible surprise to his people in Portland, to nono more 30 than his deserted wife. Rumor has it that the funds that enabled the guilty couplo to compass their purposes vrerc obtained in a manner that was in keeping with the object to which they were applied. It is thought that they have taken passage for Panama or tho Sandwich Islands. Council Proceedings. The council met last Tuesday even ing, Mayor Hahn presiding. Tho usual routine of business was trans acted and tho council proceeded to act upon sundry nominations. The nom inations of Ferguson for Auditor and Logan for Street Superintendent vrero lost. The nominations of Holdeu for Treasurer, Winton for Police Judgo and Fulton for City Attorney were confirmed. Tho nomination of Sehlin for Chief of Police wir lost. Sundry ordinances wero passed and bills al lowed, and tho council adjourned. The Indians Object The Lewiston Teller says that tho position taken by the Flat Head In dians against tho N. P. B. R. extend ing through their lands, is liable to give that company troublo and may give some trouble to tho Government. It seems that their chief had givon his consent, but that his people havo re pudiated his authority in this respect, and will resist, by force, all efforts to build the road across theirroservation, nor will they allow tho surveyors to mako the necessary surveys. It is to bo hoped that tho matter may be ad justed without any calling of force. Remember tho Auction sale of the "Harvest Home" this afternoon. Tho hull and ship's effects will bo sold to the highest bidder for cash, and tho sale take place at Holden's auction rooms, half an hour after the arrival of tho Portland steamer." The American bark Vesuvius, 210 days from New York; the British ship County of Bute, 38 days from Shanghai; tho British ship Argosy, 87 days from Montovidso; the British bark Aoadian from Londonderry, and the bark Whistler from San Francisco, arrived in yesterday. Thero are about twenty papers on our exchange list that we get but semi-occasionally. If any publisher finds The Astoeian ceases coming he will know that ho has been cut off on account of lack of attention in refer ence-to mailing. We aro tired of mailing papers to editors who are too careless to see mat tnmrs coruo in ex change "Dear Sir: How many churches. 8choal3 and saloons in Astoria? What is the leading occupation of the citi zens? How many dentists are there? Does your river frcezo over in tvintor time? Pleaso send me two or three copies of your paper. I may go out to your section next spring." All this from Illinois, and never a cent, not I even a portage stamp. Not any. - "The Swing of the Pendnlnm." Tho audience that gathered at the M. E. Church last Tuesday evening to hear Rev. J. A. Gray, of Portland, was favored with an intellectual treat. The lecturer prefaced the lecture proper with a short dissertation on social placings, upon our general viow ings of the universe, and the im pulses, desires and promptings that occasioned all of ua to think and act as wo do. Epitomized, it may bo said that ho viewed all men as being their own world, assimilating and utilizing that portion vi the great universe ac cording to the selective power of that greater universe within. In graceful phrase and glowing imagery he por trayed the swiugaand sway of human passion, and likening it te the surging of a mighty impulse, he, in the swing of his . subject, swung into an arc of thought subtended only by the chord of universal ideas. Then, illus trative of that principle which per vades all nature, animate and inani-. mate, he spoke at length of tho gulf stream; of Ihe unceasing heaving and tossing of tho mighty waters; of the swinging of those great pendulums that tick the weal or woo of all earth's mil lions in the rise and fall of all the cur rents of the earth and sea; the sun lifting from their tossing bed the wa ters from "old ocean's gray and mel ancholy waste," which, borne upon the wings of tho willing air, were wafted far over the earth to fall in cepious showers and glow in the flower, and wave in the wheat, und mako melody in the crystal brook, and glis ten in the prismatic tints of the rain bow that spanned the arch of heaven. Then ho spoke of the great swing ing of life's pendulum that sometimes so fearfully demonstrated the jrreat law of physic3, "Action and reaction are equal," of the mighty potency, of misdirected force, and showed how the human heart, when swung in the arc of interest or passion may go 'in dark rebound to tho farthest verge of earth's circling segment. Tho perora tion of Mr. Gray's lecture was a gem of poetic thought and vivid word painting. His aptness of illustration, readiness of language and fitting phraso of faultless diction was a pres ent joy when listened to, and forms a satisfactory remembrance when called te mind. At the close of the lecture, which was heartily applauded, Mr. Parsons announced that on next Tuesday even ing Rev. G. W.'Izer would lecture on "Literature."
