Rosenberg, of Salem, is visiting friends here. The mornings and evenings are be coming a little more clastic. Five inches of snow and ther mometer ten degrees in Union county. Tho warmer temperature of up river points ha. dispelled all fears of a freeze up. Prayer meeting this evening at the Young Men's rooms, at 7 o'clock. All cordially invited. Reference to our files shows that thu3 far we've- had unusually dry weather for January. Regular communication of Tem ple Lodge No. 7, F. & A. ,31. this evening p.t 7:30 o'clock. The Norwegian bark Alert has discharged one hundred and twenty tons of coal at Gray's dock. . . Tho Portland City Council has passed an ordinance levying a tax of three mills for dredging purposes. Steamer day, Oregon tip, Colum bia down. Tho Oregon has seventy three tons of freight for this place. The Standard seems to be the only paper in Oregon that is disposed to make much present fug's about poli tics. Scoville continues his argument in the Guitcau trial; it is thought the case will go to the jury about next Wednesday. $Iajor Morris, Collector of Cus toms, is now the sole representative of the United States government in southeastern Alaska. Portland patty thieves aro play ing it pretty low down when they will steal a five-gallon can-of coal oil from a poor newspaper man. Tho American ship McNear, Tay lor, nlaster, arrived in yesterday, Gfty fivc days from Hongkong. Iler burthen is, 1,308 tous; sho is in ballast. D. P. Thompson has the contract for grading the railroad across the Blue mountains. This includes a tun nel Dfteui hundred feet long through basalt. Henry White, bettor known as "Big Hank" and of happy memory to Astoria, was arrested in Portland last Thursday on a charge of assault and battery. The Oregonian's last editorial on tho Columbia bar says that thero is twenty-one feet of water on St. Hel en's bar. River pilots say there is seventeen and one-half, but then tho infallibility of the Orcgonian lifts it abovo and beyond all criticism. The Levi P. Burgess arrived in yesterday. Captain Sterrall says that during the thirty-sue days ho was out side there was but ono day that he would have been willing to risk his vessel crossing in, and that ho thinks tho efforts of the tugs in thoir en deavors to got vessels in with all pos sible despatch worthy of commenda tion. . David Newsoinc died suddenly at his farm, on Howell prairie, near Salem, on tho morning of the 18th He was one of the pioneers of the State and was well advauced in years, being nearly eighty. He made him self prominent by tbe parts he tpok in politics and temperance, and his let "ters upon various current topics, pub lished in nearly every paper in tho State, attracted gre3 attention.. LOSS OF TH3 HAHVEST HOME. Wrecked on tho "Weather Beach. THE CA.PTAIXS STQRy-OF THE DISASTER. FAITHLESS CHRONOMETER. Late on Thursday night word came of the loss of the Harvest Home bound from San Francisco to the Sound. Various rumors were afloat, but the Gen. Canby, which came in at tv.o o'clock yesterday afternoon, brought up the Captain, A. M:-t json, who gives the following account of the wreck: The bark Harvest Home, 593 tons register, sailed from San Francisco on the 4th inst. for Seattle and Port Tottiisend. The first two days out had thick fog, later on strong 2f . W. viiuds, nhich shifted on the 17th to N. . W. and blew a gale. On the 18th had ery rough weather, and at noon by obsen.stion was 324 miles from Cape Flattery, bearing N. N. E. ; ves sel steered in that diiection, and at 12 midnight, had, according -to patent loi, made ninety-four miles. At twenty minutes to one on Thursday morning, tho 19th, the vessel struck on a sand beach ten miles north of Cipe Hancock; the weathec was thick and the vessel was hard afost, no amount of effort to save her being of any avail. As soon as day broke the ciew removed the ship's stores and personal effects, taking them ashore. The Captain left the scene of the wreck for Astoria at half past seven yesterday morning; when he left, there nasvix feet of water in the hold and the men were engaged in taking out freight. He says he can only account for the disaster by reason of tho defec tion of the chronometer; ho has had tho 'ame chronometer for tho last eight years, and it never before failed him, but on this occasion it was neaily five degrees out of the way. The vessel lies about half way be tween Shoal water bay and the mouth of the Columbia river, directly op posite Captain Estabrook's place, and at low tide is high and dry. Tho cargo, consisting of two hundred tons of merchandise for the Sound, can be saved, the vessel itself is a total loss. The Harvest Home was owned by Preston, Nuttsen and Mattson of San Francisco, and was partially insured. Safe iu Port. GAitiB'LDi, Jan. Hi, 1882. Ennei: AsToniAN : After a long and wearisome trip wo managed to cross Tillamook bir at mid-night, the 11th, and if ever I prayed to get into Tillamook, I prayed that night; hut wo got in all right, and ai soon as daylight camo, all the people were glad to see us, for we looked like strangers, being away 0 long; 1 hope.from this on the weather will be a little more moderate, so that the lucky little craft, Alpha, can make her regular trips. Hex. Tho scow Amelia is loading fifty tons of coal at Gray's dock for Brook field. Tho foundry of the Astoria Iron Works had a large run on Thursday and will cast agiin to-day. - Tho editor of tho Bunch Grass Gazette, in announcing the suspension of his paper, gives reason for such re turn to sanity that he has spent 18C and received 34. A hen w e read the exchanges and see an account of murder and lynching m ono town, rapo in another, seduc tion iu another, nnd all kinds of ras cality in still another, wo conclude that this community is to be congratu lated on the orderly and peaceable disposition of its citizens. Will. Watkinds, of ToiUaml, has appeared before Judge Stott. and offered to let tho court set the amount of the bonds to guarantee the State against loss in the prosecution of its caso against W. Stanley, for libel. Tho court refused to fix the bonds, whereupon Mr. Watkinds offered security to the amount of 3,000, but District Attorney Caples considered tho sum insufficient, and Judge Stott has taken the caso under advisement. Complaints como to ns from sub scribers in various quarters that they don't got their papers regularly. This is always a source of annoyance, and yet we aro powerless in the matter. The paper i3 mailed promptly and correctly and our boys make no mis takes. Tho other day a gentleman who had been anay, and who, like all good Astorians, ordered tho paper sent to him during his absence, told us that whilo away, he got it scmi occasionally, generally five together tied in a bunch. It wm very thought ful of the gool Samaritan that tied thoin togtnher, buMf wo might bo al lowed a little say in the matter would rather that they be sent right through on tho morning boat. wrsic o.v tiii: half sheIx. He waited for his oyster stow, And drummed upon his pint A solo with his plated fork. And thus did meditate: -I think ono plato will not suffice; I think I would not rue it, If I should take another dish : I'll do it, yes, 111 duct." He took his stew, he took his two, And then he heaves a sigh, 0, And murmured in the waiter's ear. -'Another dish 111 trio." Another, nnd another still : In fact, when he had ceased, This human oyster depot had A quartet at the least Mozart. Shanghaiera. The Standard says the cases against Lynch and Franklin, who were ar raigned in tho police couft charged with enticing sailors to desert their ship, were dismissed on motion of the State, as tho captain of the ship was ready to sail and could not afford time to attend court and prosecuto the cases. He paid the amnuut of costs, amounting to $23, but got his sailors and is headed for the ocean now. It is rather, singular that men who aro given to the rough, hard Hfo sailors will allow themselves to bo stole and sold for a couple plugs of to bacco and a "souwester" every time they como into port. So singular is it, in fact, that some people are bo ginning to believe that .rack tars are by no means the imposcd-upon angels their lawyers try to make them appear, and aro often quite willing to desert without any enticing on the part of land lubbers. Another Case for Vigilantes. Tho Lafayette correspondent of the McMinnville Reporter, writing under date of tho 18th inst., says: 1 just learned from Mr. Jas. Olds that his nephew Frank, son of Green Olds, of Stringtown, received a letter some time since, supposed to be from the East, bat without date or signature, which contained what was supposed to b'e a smallpox ssab, nnd this laconic sentence: "Read this and dir." Olds, I hear, is down and broken out with smallpox. If this is true (and there is no doubt of it) the government should set detectives on tho track of such scoundrels, and when found, hang them. In commenting upon the letter, the Reporter says: The letter above des cribed is a etc simile of tho3e mentioned in tho dispatches a day or two ago, as being distributed throughout the East. It behooves us all to use the utmost caution in handling letters whoso ap pearances are strange to us, and oven then there is no knowing wha't fearful havoc the heartless villains may sow throughout the land. No private teams are employed on tho grade as had bpon the manage ment under the former administra tion. The forage is procured from Spqkan county, and the farmers are reaping the advantage of con venient market. At present hay is -worth 20 a ton delivered at the station, and oats and barley are in equally good demand. All kinds of vegetables command excellent prices. Tho boarding of the white men is under the management of DuBois & King, of Portland. The charge for board is S-l.oO per week, and a hospital feo of one dollar per month is deducted from each man's wages. From this fee, in case of sickness, jthe men can have medical attendance at the com pany's hospital uutil thoy are de clared discharged by the physician.
