The table of population :ts fin ally corrected by the census bu reau, shows a population of 50,- 155,783, an increase in ten years, of 11,597,412, equal to a gain of thirty per cent. The whitapopu lationjs 43.402,970, the negroes number C,580,793, the Chinese, J05,465, and 60,407 are Indians. Theincrease in .New Hampshire has been only 1,735. or a little more than one-half of one per .cent, while Dakota has grown from 14,181 to 135,177, showing the unprecedented in crease of 853 per cent. The in crease in the New England states is below the average Maine show ing Z per cent, Connecticut 10, Massachusetts 22. None of the .Middle states,- with the exception of West Virginia, which shows an increase of forty per cent, equal the average gain in the country, ranging from ten per cent in New York through seventeen in Dela ware, twenty in Maryland, twenty two in Pennsylvania, twenty-three tte .. . ..:.. XT 111 Virginia u iwuiiiy-ssix in jbh iow, .Terse'. The central western states do not, taken as a whole, show that phenoininal growth which has heretofore distinguished them, as Indiana has increased eighteen per cent, Ohio twenty, Illinois twenty-one, Kentucky twenty-five, Missouri twenty-six, Iowa thirty six, Michigan thirty-eight, and Minnesota sovnnty-eight per cent. Of the extreme western states and territories, New Mexico shows the slowest growth, stopping at thirty per cent., from which the percent age increases to forty-seven in Nevada, fifty-four in California, sixty-six in Utah, ninety in Mon tana, ninety-two in our own state, ninety-four in Texas, one hundred and seventeen in Idaho, one hun dred and twenty-eight in Wyo ming, one hundred and seventy three in Kansas, two hundred and fourteen in Washington, two hunt dred and.sixty-eight in Nebraska, three hundred and nineteen in Ar izona, three hundred and eighty eight in Colorado, until it reaches its highest figure, eight hundred fifty-three per cent, in Dakota. Arkansas leads the southern states with an increase of sixty-six per cent, and is followed in their or der by Florida, with forty-four, South Carolina with forty-one, Mississippi with thirty-seven, North Carolina with thirty-one, Georgia with thirty, Louisana with twenty-nine, Alabama with twenty-eight, and Tennessee with twenty-three, only the last three falling below thy general average increase for the country. Consid ering the political complications of that section and tiie difficulties it has encountered, owing to its - mixed social conditions, of secur ing foreign immigration, the show ing is an excellent one, even tie- ' spite the inaccuracies of the pre ceding census, witn which com parison must be made. These figures, taken as a whole show that while the class of immi grants has improved, they yet be long to that class that want to better their fortunes, who seek the very cheap lands f the west, rather than those of the east which are cheap in comparison with the countries from which they come. They "also demonstrate that immi grants who go to the west incline' to become agriculturists; while those " who, stop in the cast continue to incline toward the great cities. The systematic ef forts made by railroads and immi gration commissioners" in the states to scatter this new accession of new population over the vacant lands of f lie west are now show ing their efficiency; and as the same machinery will continue-in operation and be still farther per fected, the same result will natur ally be evident in a much greater degree during the -next ten years. While" "the" influences whiph have tended to make immigration from Europe heavy may not be so potent in this decade as in the last it is certain that tho old countries will continue to distribute over all sections of this country a strong contingent of their citizent, which will tend to complicate rather thau to solve the problems "which we are continually encountering, and the entire country bids fair to grow in population and wealth with as great rapidity as is con sistent with our even and well; balanced mental and moral de velopment. Brewster, the new Attorney General, hasWrne good ideas. In a late address he said: "The high est public distinctions in this coun try have no attraction for right minded men unless they are the unsought reward of personal worth, dignity and character, mental abil ity and- a blameless life. Obtained in any way they are a disgrace to those who hold them. They were intended to be great honors, not rich sinecures. The compensation attached to the best of them is not equal to the income that any man can earn who is fit to have them and discharge the duties." NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. MISCELLANEOUS. Bealtb le Wealth!
