I N CJ 5?Itc -nals. Ssfcrofcxtu ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY- JAN. o, 1SS2 J. f. Il.tLLOU.VX Editor. ltailroatl Connection. way company, ;ncbrporated in Port land last Saturday From the Standard we learn that the enter prise in which said corporation is to engage is: First, .the .construct ing and operating,of a railroad or railroads from, a point on the east ern boundary Hne of the State of Oregon, at or nenr the junction of the Snake ami 'Malheur rivers, westward, crossing the Cascade mountains, by way. either of the McRenzio river, Minto Pass, and Santiam river or,, by way of the middle fork of the "Willamette river to the city of Portland; sec ond, to- construct a road from the same 'point on the eastern bound ary of the. state, northwestward via .Baker City to' the Columbia river, at the- town of Umatilla, or such other point as may, be found most practicable, thence by way of said river on the south bank thereof, tothe west side of the Cascade mountains, and thence to the city of Portland. Third, the construction, etc., of an extension of said lines, or with one thereof from Portland nortnward to some point on the Columbia river. The 'connecting .with such other rail road and' navigation company, owning or operating lines of trans portation in the state of Oregon, or any other state or territory in the in the United States, as may be deemed expedient, and entering into agreements therewith for the pro-' rating'on" freights, and fares on either or both. It is the intent and purpose of the corporation to build a line of railroad in connec tion" w'itfr, and a part of the Oregon Short Line of Wyoming Territory, and to ultimately consolidate with and become a part of said line. It is expected that the 0. R. &N. Co. wiljcxtend their line to Baker City-aiid that'the" Sliort Line will be built from Granger to Boise by the end of this year mid MB" Te- maining 120 miles between the two termini to lie built and oper ated by one 'of the other, roads, as may be mutually agreed upon, and earnings divided pro rata, but Mr. "Williams says that Mr. Villard haa a charter to build through Idaho and Wyoming, and the Short Line must be ready to return the com plimenT iJy'Ccoming. "to" Oregon, hence the-preparation, as it is barely , possible that this agree ment may be'riiillified. ' 'Whatever may be the future of the Short Ijinef?h Oregon, its -headquarters will be in Portland, and if it does not join Mr. Villard's enterprises, will make that city its western terminus ? A Brother's Opinion. Tn' an interview with John Gui teau, brother of the assassin, on .the3rd,3he saidt..accordirij to a Washington dispatch, the prisoner receives about three hundred let- ,'ters'' "a day'. They are no longer sent to him. We have not time to read them, as there are too many, other-.important things to . do. ' It", would not be proper, of .4 :W.&$ftfcl2end them to him. Al- '. -t losBp bjtn to hold levees, read 'J j'plpere see letters, send out Jet- 1rfcte,3S!)ff?hingsof that sort, is not t'shMWPr'nipe- - prisoner so . -situated might get up a conspiracy. ". . Of55ifse' there Is notliingof that kind to be feared in this case. "Whatls your opinion as to the result of that trial." "I "believe 'the jury will hang liitn,,anq3or insane. 1 have al ways told oiir people so. The 'tendenchf this expert testimony has been very .strong against him. These gentleman have a theory Ahafc tnefeScannot'be'insanity with out disease. We all knew that as soon as they' came here and began , JV? ?$C$5!i,,e,r' he i Jfl- been -sick or not, what the testimony would , bcggeptlemen .are honest in their theory, but their theory is wrong. They are partisan de- " fehderi'"of a"nw ideV When sharp lawyers began to gain an acquittal on the ground of emo tional insanity and his being monomaniac, the experts got to gether and decided that the brain must be found Jo be diseased in order to establish insanity. It is a IvMwijr wiuv uuum iiiiug any iikiij. The truth is my brother is an idiot? les, an ldtot," 'continued Mr. Giteau. In response to an ex clamation of surprise, he said: "There are different kinds of idiots. He was born without ordinary common sense. He ought to be thinking about other things," said MrJ Guiteau, speaking of letters received for the prisoner, "he ought to be thinking about his latter end." "In the event of his being hanged what disposition will be made of his body"?" "I have my opinion but I don't like to give it." He hesitated a moment and then overcoming his momentary scruples, said, "I think the prosecution will do anything to justify their course, and there will be no post mortem examination made." Guiteau further expressed the opinion that the jury would not be out more than two hours before deciding a verdict of con viction. "The truth is," he said, "pressure of public opinion is too great. It is bulldosing the judge and jury and everybody else. I wll say for Judge Cox, however, that he has shown remarkable dis cretion and firmness during the whole trial." The present surplus of coin in the federal treasury has developed numerous schemes for expending it. Speculators and public plun derers of hhjh and low degree have projects for constructing all sorts of public works which they will own and the Government will pay for. The worst of it is that many needed improvements; many measures of national importance in the matter of river and harbor improvements are, for' that very reason overlooked. By the time the "jobs" arc pretty well put through, many legitimate bills come up just in time to share in tho odium the passage of the for mer inspires and are killed. In a late speech at Carlisle, Lawson, a member of parliament said in reference to the Irish questien: "If peoplo had some thing disagreeable they did not stick to it, but got rid of it. If tbey had a housemaid who was constantly breaking crockery, get ting into hysterics, and acting in such a way that two or three had to b'e called in to her, they would say, 'wayward sister, go in peace.' And if they did not get the Irish question settled, he would cast away all prejudice and look the question impartially in the face. He did not see much argument in the way the leaders and everybody dealt with this question. There was one thins;, they said, which could never be allowed the utsintcrgration of the empire. "A five sylkilile.ii word always fetched John Hull, and yet we have been disinter grated over and" over again, and it did us a great deal of good. Once upon a time we ruled America, but the Americans did not want us to rule them any more, and were disintegrated." A California negro minstrel recently employed in a lucrative engagement failing to act in his usual hilarious manner, gives as his reason that he had lost in real estate ventures. The manager now brings suit that his troubadour be funny by order of the court, or show cause why his engagement should not be cancelled. MARRIED. Durnsido J.nmley. In Astoria, Jan. 3d. by Rev. J. V.
