McfSuire go up the river to-day to attend the Uillsboro fair. The Columbia slid over the bar at 8:30 a. m. yesterday, and disparted up stream at 10. The Comity of Rothes arrived down from Portland yesterday; Ockla hama towing, Reed pilot. The father of Mr. A. E. Withers arrived by steamer Columbia yester day from the Atlantic side. The front of the new JVL E. church is rapidly approaching com pletion. The spire was being put in place yesterday. I. S. Jones gives notice in another column that any one who pays taxes in Pacific county, W. T., has now an excellent opportunity. Regular communication of Tem ple Lodge No. 7, A. F. and A. M. this evening at 7:30 o'clock. Work in the M. M. degree. It was currently reported on the streets last evening that the State of California, due here from Portland, was aground at Swan island. Under the head of "New To-day" ever' one will learn that M. D. Kant has just what he says, and the fact is not to elude any one's memory. Davenport1 now hails fiam the port of Astoria. Her register was changed on the 2Sth, to enable Capt. J. C. Ainsworth to act as managing owner. The Astoriax acknowledges calls yesterday from Hon. II. W. Scott, editor of Hie Oregonian, and Hon. 'A. F. Moody, Speaker of the late House in the Oregon assembly. A very pleasant party was given by Mr. Thomas Russell, at their resi dence, last Thursday evening. About twenty couple were present and left at a late hour, having enjoyed a very pleasant time. The skies that flush in crimson splendor to the north and west were overspread yesterday afternoon till nearly sunset, when the slantin light shone out from a cloud-rift in a Sep tetnber good-bye. Capt. M. M. Oilman and his wife contemplate leaving for California on the Columbia next Wednesday. If the Capt.'s health is beneGtted to the extent he hopes, he will probably re main below all winter. We are requested to -announce that cu Monday next another depart ment will bo opened in the room ad joining the primary school. Miss Eliza Boelling ivill he the teacher, which is sufficient evidence that the exercises will be well conducted. Holden's real estate auction sale was postponed from yesterday till to day, on account of tha custom house sale of smuggled goods occupying a longer time than was expectea. The city lots advertised in anotherjcolumn wiU be offered this morning at Hol den's auction rooms. Sale to com menoe promptly at eleven o'clock. Jackins & Montgomery have in a new ad., and arc prepared to sell anything in their line at the lowest available price. Give them a call. A Salem dispatch of the 29th ult. says that on that day the body of Patrick McManus was found in the mill race near the agricultural works, with his neck broken and some severe contusions on the head. The newness of our surroundings must sorve as explanation of any dis crepancy in news items in to-day's issue. Wc shall take it as a favor if our friends which includes the entire reading public will post us as to hap penings and occurrences of which they ken. - At V, o'clock last Wednesday af ternoon the new steamboat Elizabeth J. Irving, while on her second trip to Yale, took fire at the town of Fort Hope, on Frailer rivor, and was totally consumed. She had on board the mails, eighty passengers and a full freight of railway and other goods. Everything was destroyed totally. All the while passen. ..s, it is thought, were saved, but it is believed a num ber of Indians lost their lives. A correspondent to the Eugene Journal say a: A curiosity in insect life has been discovered a mile and a half from the springs by hunters. They say every bush, tree, and shrub is completely covered, and stripped of every Testige of foliage, by thousands of caterpillars of all sizes under an inch and a half long. A person pass ing along the trail soon wears a coat of these insects, and his gun is covered with them. Whence so many of these disgusting pillars come so suddenly is a mystery unable to be solved by. local inscctologists. The Oregonian correspondent from Albany has not a very flattering opinion of the exhibit at the Linn County fair. And in relation to the matter of fairs in the abstract he takes the high moral stand that their influ ence is bad upon young men and women, particularly young men. "Every species of vice is spread out before them in alluring forms. Gam bling in a dozen forms 1 do not re fer to the races, which benefit the stock interests of the country is licensed and given the lest stand on the ground, frauds of evory sort are openly permitted and practiced all for a little money for the society. It would be eas' to prevent these very grave abuses." Mr. Henry Yilhml and party ar rived at this city yesterday morning. Said putty included several well known gentlemen. Among them were Ilerr Herzog of Berlin, fJormany, Sec retary of State with Uismarck; Profes sor James Bryce, of Oxford, member of the English Parliament; Gen. Henry H. L. Burnett, of the .New York law firm of Bristow Burnett; Junius Henri Brown, the well-known Now York journalist and author; William Lloyd Garrison, of Boston, son of the famous reformer; H. 1. Winser, late Consul at Sonneburg, Germany; William W. Hates, the celebrated Chicago ahip-builder; Charles Fairchild, a Boston capitalist; S. G. Reed, Charles F. McKinn, a New York architect. Mr. Spolford, son of the Librarian of Congress, is private secretary ioMr. Yillard. The party also includes George A. Pills bury, of Minneapolis, the greatest miller of the world, and J. C. Hender son, engineer and constructor, who built the Columbia and Oregon, steamers, and Alfred L. Stokes, of Chicago, General Eastern Passenger Agent of the Oregon Railway and Navigation compairy. Upon arriving here they were met by a large delega tion of distinguished citizens from Portland who had come down in the steamer Wide West. After a brief sojourn, during which time the tour ists strolled along the cit' front, the Wide West swung out with all on board for Portland.
