Mail and telegraph daily brings us word that men are falling dead in the streets of eastern cities, also in Europe, by sunstroke. The heat has been intense east of the Rocky mountains and fatal in hun dreds of instances. It is consider ably warmer in the valley than at Astoria, but anywhere the climate of Oregon is cool and pleasant compared with what we hear of other parts of the country. "We have often said that the very worst weather we have here is preferable to the very best they enjoy over on the other side. We have no occasion to qualify the remark. One peculiarity of this climate, which greatly increases health and comfort, is that when evening comes, even after the warmest days, the air is cool and delicious, and sleep is sound and refreshing. This climate, with its immunity from all extremes of heat and cold, is scarcely equalled on the face of the earth. Exhibit D. The chief clerk of the house of representatives, has received noti- fication in due form of fifteen seats which will be contested, most of them accompanied by volumi nous testimonv. Alabama has four. Except one in Iowa and one in Maine, all the contestants are from southern states. A curi ous piece of evidence accompan ies the package of testimony in the case of Robert Smalls against Gr. D. Tillman, in the fifth district of South Carolina. The sealed package, which can only be opened 03 the house committee on elec tions, is about eighteen inches square and four thick. To this is tied a stout hickory stick, about four feet long, which i labeled Exhibit D. The nomination of Burcn R. Sherman for governor of Iowa by the republican convention is :i tri umph in the moderate vr'ing of the temperance party. Mr. Sherman is in favor of submitting the pro hibition amendment for the adop tion or rejection of the people. Justice Clifford died at 0 o'clock on Monday. Judge I'ooley, of Michigan is mentioned as his most probable successor, and there are some who talk of ex-Senator Conk- ling for the place, but likely if ConKling should 1 appointed to the supieme bench he will succeed Hunt, whose retirement is only a question of a few months. The reception given to Mr. Yil lard at the Metropolitan, July 15th, was one of the most noteworthy events that has occurred in St. Paul in years. Jt was a most felicitous blending of social cour tesies and business relations, and was carried out in the most pleas ant and mutually profitable man ner that could have been desired. A Liverpool correspon dent says that the police believe that the story about the discovery of in fernal machines in barrels pur porting to contain cement from America is a hoax. Another cor respondent says that information about clock work, dynamite and infernal machines received by steamers from America is correct, but the authorities are reticent. It is the general opinion of the press that Mrs. Garfield ought to decline the proposed donation of 250,000; but one editor, more practical than the rest, says the money will be needed to pay the doctors bills. The donations now foot up 150,000. Perhaps under this view of the case the re maining $100,000 may as well be made up. Four of the persons' in attend ance upon the president have been seized with malaria since he was confined to the "White House. This is the pleasing result of congress ional inactivity upon a question of serious importance now, because constant doses of quinine alone will probably ward oil' some trouble from the president. "When con gress meets next winter we shall doubtless see something done about the Potomac flats and the sanitary condition of the White House, but legislative inertia brings a heavy penalty when it endangers the health, and even lives, of the president and family. Porcelain XaVtwg In Clatsop. A porcelain factory near Asto- ria is to be a thing of the future. It is now an established fact that kaolin, feldspar and flint, for the manufacture of fine china, are found in inexhaustible quantities in the vicinity of the Sea-side, and it only needs capital to start the manufacture of porcelain. Skill ful operatives from Bohemia could be imported to work in the factory. The quality of the china, judging from samples of the material which we have seen, will be far better than any made in the United States, and will compete favorabby with the fine chinas of Europe. Gen. Grant has just bought a thousand dollar pair of horses. They are Hambletonian geldings, sixteen hands and one quarter inch in hight, respectively; six and seven years old. One has white hind feet, the other is dark all around. They are very beautiful horses, gentle, kind, and perfect in appearance. Ex-Queen Isabella, of Spain, is a great admirer of the Paris Figaro, and frequently drops in of an evening to see the staff at work, always ending her call by inviting the force out to a banquet at her expense. "We don't see how an editor can work, with a queen rummaging round the office knocking over type, and reading manuscript, that is none of her business. It would annoy us to death'. Miss Mary Wells, of Sandusky, Ohio, is 17 years of age, and weighs 3 GO pounds. Her foot is exactly seventeen inches long, seven and three-eighths inches wide at the widest part, and could take a No. 2G boot, though a No. 30 would be just the thing. The ball of the foot is nineteen inches around, instep eighteen "and one half inches, and the heel measures twenty-two inches. The ankle measures sixteen and one-half inches. T he storm of Wednesday night did great damage in Wisconsin Property was deluged, dams swept away and death and destruction marked its naih. The house of a Norwegian was surrounded bv a torrent and his wife and six chil dren, ranging in age irom six months to fifteen years, made a frenzied attempt to escape. The rising flood, however, soon en gulfed them, and they wore swepH along lifeless with the waters.
