r) gnc nil3 Jvslxrctotu. ASTORIA- OREGON: FBjyjAY. JULl . ihju .C.IKELAM .Editor. Condition of the President. The record of th presidents case is one of steady improvement. Little can be added in the way of details to facts in official bulletins and telegrams to consulting sur geons. The doctors seem to have one language for the public and another for private persons, but the confidence of the people in the recovery of the president has not been shaken. From Alaska. The California broke her cylin der head near Pearl straits and proceeded, after a short delay, with one engine, and arrived at Harris-, burp-on the 11th inst. She went to the new wharf, which is now completed, and is certainly one of the best north of Portland. Very little work has been done on ledires, but the prospects look bet- than ever. Ledge arc showing up well and have every appear ance of being solid and permanent. A mail service has been estab lished between Sitka and Harris burg, in accordance with the peti tion forwarded last February. The hills arc full of prospectors, many having gone, far into the in terior. New locations and dis coveries have been made, but none of any great value. The citizens of llarrisburg have issued a call for a convention for the purpose of sending a representative to "Washington, who will be instruct ed to urge upon the government the necessity for. the establishment of some form of government and laws. The California will go to San Francisco from Puget-sound. Prospects of an election in Al bany aie no better than last week. Canadian Pacific railroad share holders passed resolutions author ising' the issue ol -25.000.000 for bonds. The first locomotive for the Cali fornia Southern railroad has ar rived at San Diero per brio" Ori ent from San Frane.iwjo. Seven cargoes of railway non now afloat, and fiw loading, will be laid down in western ( Iregon and AYashington as. soon as it ar rives. An agent of a Kentucky liquor hou.te says his firm i uwe.ll pleaded with the demand for thi'ir whisky in Oieo-on." It would be funny if they were not pleased. There will be a first-clas tan nery in full operation in The Dalle within ninety days from date. There is no business in Waco county with a capital of $5,000 or S10,000 that will pay more hand somely. The Standard ays a man i in luck these timas if he escapes be ing robbed, even if sober, but a drunken man stand no show at all, and strangers at riving in Portland had better deposit their coin in the safe of their hotel. The government steamer Wa chusetr, McArthur, and Ilassler, have just left San Francisco. The "Wachussett goes to Sitka to re lieve the Jamestown, which is ordered home; the Hassle r is bound for Alaska, and the McArthur goes north on a general survey. Colonel Mendel, assistant engi neer Payson, and commissioner Knox have visited the brush dams of Yuba and Bear rivers, Califor nia, and report them in a flourish ing condition. The dams were not so badly injured by the fresh ets as was thought, and, except in in a few spots where breaks oc curred, the willows are growing in a way to strengthen them. They are not designed to impound the fine sand which floats alonjr with the-Avater until it forms a stagnant pool. This fine sand will float along and settle in the waters of the bajr and harbor of San Fran cisco. It is impossible to avoid this result. The brush dam sys tem might be useful to hold in check the debris now in the moun tain streams; but as a remedy for the evil of hydraulic raining, they are entitled to little consideration. SSThere is not now any better news paper, nor oue more consisteiitlv de voted to the building up of the country than The Astobiax. At the price of. TwoDolIars-peryear it is the cheapest, as well a3thobest "With your aid and encouragement we shall be able to make further Improvements to enhance its field of usefulness. f Buy the Weekly.
