ty 3Pe gttilij gistxwism -! ASTORIA-OREGON: TUESDAY JULY IB, 18S1 D.C.IUELAXO .EUor. Aii Important Publication. Ira G. Hoitt, Business Manager of "The Commerce ami Indus tries of the Pacific Const," and "W. B. Bancroft, are in this city collecting information for this forthcoming book, projected, and in a few months to be published, b- A. L. Bancroft & Co., of San Francisco. The work is beiug compiled and written by John S. Hittol, who was for nearly twdnty five years, one of the editors of the Alta California, wrote the Resources of California, History of San Francisco, etc., and is bet ter qualified for the work in hand than any otlier man on this coast. The book will be a quarto of 000 to SOO pages, will give a very complete account of the rise, pro gress, products, present condition, and prospects of the useful arts on this side of the Kooky moun tains, with an elaborate treatment of our fisheries, manufactures, transportation, agriculture, mining, and our various departments of business. A more useful or a more valuable book to this coast and to people of our own state, could not be contemplated. It will treat the advantages of every part of the Pacific side of tle continent im partially. Mr. Iloitt was a mem ber of the last assembly in Cali fornia, has resided in San Fran cisco for seventeen years, and brings with him credentials from V. F. Babcock, Posident of the Chamber of Commerce; Jacob S. Taber, President of the Board of Trade; William T. Coleman, R D. Hume, Goodall, Perkins & Co., Lloyd Tevis, President of Wells, Fargo & Co.; William Alvord, Piesident Bank of California; Louia McLane, President of Ne vada, of San Francisco; Geo. C. Perkins, Governor of California, and others, all of wixxn endorse the work as one of great value, and say that when it is circulated in the east and Europe, it must greatly benefit this coast. The' also endorse Mr. Uoitt us a ivli ablc business man. W. IS. Ban croft has been for many years at the head of the printing depart ment at the house of Bancroft & Co., and is wll known to many of our business men. These gen tlemen will mak; the tour of Ore gon together, and our merchants, canneries, and husiuess men should give them all the information and aid in their power, to make their work as complete as possible con cerning Oregon, and thus attract immigration. Salem is anticipating a business boom to result from the late trans fer of the Salem flouritiir mills. A home insurance company is about to be incorporated in Port land. Every town the size of As toria ouirht to have one. A little son of G. W. Lawson, of Salem, is the xsessor of a small toy pistol, and on Wednes day, to be satisfied that the ball came out of the pistol, he put his hand ovei the muzzle. The States man says he is fully satisfied that it did. Only a small piece of the third finder is erone. Russia is fast drifting into an arch'. The czar still keeps him self a close prisoner at PeterhofT. Occasionally when business on state affairs requires his presence at the capital he leaves his fortress, enters St. Petersburg almost by stealth, and returns as quietly. The nihilists did not exaggerate when they told the czar the other day that there was no longer oc casion for the use of dynamite, as the whole fabric of the empire was about to explode. Ballot 200 was a printed ballot with the name of Hon.-'D. P. Thompsou for mayor of Portland. Somebody who wanted to "scratch" Mr. Thompson wrote Joseph Simon on the ticket, and omitted to scratch, hence the ticket went into the box with the two names upon it. That ticket would have elected Mr. Simon if the scratching part had not been omitted. Mr. Thomp son claims that the ticket is not valid, and holds that his successor has not been elected. The matter has been referred to Chief Justice Lord, of the State Supreme-court, both parties aggreeing to abide by the decision whioh he may render in the case. THE HEWS. KV MAIL .VXD TEVCOnXTil Ninety-seven degrees in the shade at Omaha. The President is stoadily im proving and is out of danger. Republicans chose a successor to Senator Piatt, in New Fork assembly, in the person of Hon. Warren Miller, on the IGth. Thirteen highwaymen robbed a train on the Rock island road near Winston, Mo., on the night of the IGth. The conductor and one pas senger were killed. It was a bold scheme and has caused great ex citement. Fourteen surveying parties are in the field on the Rocky moun tain division of the Northern Pa cific railroad. By the end of the 3'ear the track-layers will reach Pompeys pillar, on the Yellow stone. New Ulm, Minnesota, a town of 3300 population, was wrecked by a cyclone on the IGth. The scene was appalling. The track of the cyclone was a scene of awful grandeur during the storm and of appalling wreck after it. An Ann Arbor man claims to have discovered another comet. This is the fourth comet discov ered .since Ma- 1st. Dr. Swift thinks, from the present position of the comet, that it is the ex pected comet of 1312. It is mov ing very slowly towards the northwest.
