Grading on the railroad from Astoria will be commenced as soon as the line is finished to The Dalles. If men could be obtained this work would be pushed immedi ately, but the company have not men enomrli now by two thousand, on work at present in process of construction. The company now have '2,700 men at work on the irade between the Cascades and the Dalles. The track has been laid nine miles up the river from the lower cascade. and the oradinr will be done to Hood river, twenty-six miles within ten davs. Bridge and trestle work and track laying will follow the grade closely. The iron for the Astoria road has been contracted for, and will be laid down ai Astoria when it arrives. The Oregouian charges that money has been offered to bribe J. S. Keller, .J. J3. Kellogg, and N. 13. Iloneyman .severally, members of the common council of Port land, in the interest of Hon. Joseph Simon for the Mayoralty. These arc grave charges, and it may be found to have been the act of politicians as unscrupulous as those who put up the job at Albany recently to oust .Senator Pratt. AVheu such political buz zards as those are about it is some times hard to believe the things they will do to thrust an opponent aside, and all apparently under the iruise of virtue and iunooence. You know them, they are identified with you in the interest of keeping up the city, which is an organ ization for mutual protection, and. if you are cheated j ou know where to ap ply for redress.
