w gfts nfl& &:sfatfaa. ASTOK1A.0KETOK: SATUIIDAY JULY 16, 16S: B.C. IRELAND .Editor. The Water Supply. Astoria will soon be obliged to adopt the course of nearly all populous cities, and discuss the water question. There are few cities in the union where the water question is not under discussion. In some places it is to complain of the high rates placed upon con sumers, but ffpnerallv on account of the growing inadequacy of the supply. This in a few instances may be attributed to a drying up or diversion of the sources of sup ply, but the chief cause is found in the rapid expansion and in crease of population, which is of late years without a parallel. New York is among the complainants. Her legislature is reminded that the volume of rxtcr must bo in creased to prevent scarcity and possible famine. Mayor Grace has addressed a letter to that body, one paragraph of which tells pretty much the whole story. He says: "For ten j'ears the Croton aqueduct has been taxed to its fullv capacity to furnish the daily supply, and the same quantity of water which in S L was consumed by :I population of 042,000, must now suffice for a population of V20S,000. The d'ecreaso of pres sure in the delivery of water is already felt as a grat detriment to the comfort and convenience of a' large part of the jxipulation, ifnot to the public liealth: and with our present prospects of the unexampled growtli in population, commerce and manufactures, tiie inadequacy of our water supply will become daily more serious.' A considerable number of artesian we.lls have been sunk in New York, some to the depth of -2,000 feet. President Killing. In a nation of fifty millions of people it would indeed M.cm strange if some crazy fool did not deem it his chosen mission to slay a president occasionally. The won der is it does not occur oftener. With the contagious example of a Booth and a Guitteau before the country, it should not henceforth be considered safe for tlie Presi dent to mingle freely with the peo ple, as has been the practice here tofore. He should surround him self with a body-guard, and never go out in public without some pro tection of that sort. And then there should be a special law for th? punishment of persons who at tempt the life of the President. It should be made permissible for any person to slay such a would-be as sassin on sight, and without trial, where he was positively known and insanity should be no excuse. If 'Certain death was known to be the punishment for this crime, we should seldom have occasion to resort to such an extreme. Dr. Hamilton considei's tlp Presi dent out of tlansrcr. Damages to crops from floods in Iowa cannot be estimated. At the celebration of the battle of the Boyne, in Ireland, some dis turbances are reported. Senator Conkling called alone at the executive mansion, at 8 i if. Thursday and left his card, but did not pass inside the door. The purpose of the tour of King Kalakua is t lift the mortmain? which Claus Sprcckles holds on the islands, in the monopoly of the sugar irade, by inviting compe tition. Think of it! Tlie town of Tuc son, Arizona, which without the railroad might, for years to come, as in those that have passed, have reposed in an airof bomnolency, has its directory, published in a vol ume of one hundred and fourteen pages, and containing, besides the the names of residents of the town, much valuable, information con - corning its history. St. .Tulicn and Maud S. arc in Chicago. Maud S. lowered her record a quarter of a ""second at Pittsburg on the 14th. The track was heavy by rain and Jiad been rolled twenty feet out from the 'j pole to the disadvantage of the mare, but like a shot from a cau- " non she sped and crossed the line in 2:10i-, beatingher best time a quarter1 of a second." ;Some say 2:10.
