ASTORIA. OREGON:
FRIDAY JULY 1. 1SS1
B.C. IRELAND.
..editor. ,
Our Anniversary.
Eight years ago tins morning
the first copy of Tun Astoria x
was printed, July 1, 1873. Re
ferring to the introductory remarks
in our first editorial we stand by
them to-day." Astoria has grown
in importance since then. Perhaps
not so much as we may have
hoped; but when we look back at
the town of July T, 1873, and then
look about us here, to-day, there
is much cause for congratulation.
The policy of Tun Astokiax re
mains just as it begun; liberal,
independent, fearless, honest, and
candid in all things; endeavoring
to accomplish a good work for all
Orenon. "What we claimed for
Astoria then as a Sea-port for the
whole interior, drained by the
Columbia, wc claim to-daj', and
shall continue to advocate those
claims until the world recognizes
the fact; and this fact will be fully
and emphatically endorsed before
another eight years roll around.
Sessions, the Albany briber has
been indicted, and is held in bunds
for his appearance.
Germany is obtaining more than
her share of the iron trade. Low
wages and freights and cheap raw
material enable her to undersell
the English market.
Here is a fact illustrating the
value of industrial exhibitiens:
Since the centennial, o er a thou
sand printing presses have been
shipped to France from Philadel
phia. One of the Parisian papers de
voted to electrical science is of
opinion that electrie railways can
not be successfully employed ex
cept in tuunels or on elevated
roads.
During" the storm in Washington
Tuesday night, twelve hundred
and sixty shade trees were blown
down, scores of buildings unroofed
and damaged, four hundred stieet
lamps damaged and all gas blown
out.
Several hundred Scandinavians
who went to the Sandwich islands
under contracts made with Capt.
Lorange, are held there in what is
practically a state of slavciy. The
story creates a sensation and sev
eral communications have been
sent to Norway and Sweden, warn
ing the people against Hawaiian
emigration agents.
The American colony in Paris
is preparing to celebrate the
Fourth of July by an entertain
ment surpassing in magnificence
arrytlring' of the kind ever seen
outside of America. A superb
chateau, with grounds capable of
accommodating five thousand ex
pected guests, at Maison, and only
half an hour by rail from Paris,
has been granted for the occasion
by the owner, a Russian nobleman.
Rumors have been rife in Al
bany during the past week in re
lation to the prospect of an early
commencement of work on the
railroad to Yaquina bay. The
Democrat cannot yet state definite
ly, but seems to know for a fact
that some very- important dispatch
es have been received from the
east, and. that they intimate that
work will commence in a few
weeks. Surveying parties will
take the field within a week.
Arrangements have been made so
that six hundred Chinese can be
put to work on a few days notice,
and everything seems to indicate
that at least something may be
done. We hope so.
Piracy in the China sons has not
been enterely broken up, notwith
standing the many foreign ships of
war and the lanm number of
steamers in those waters. The
German bark Occident was hoard
ed last month by the crows of
two pirate junlcSj and plundered
of all the money and other useful
articles the pirates could ay their
hands on. The complement of
the bark consisted of only three
white men and seven Chinamen,
and the peculiar means used by
the pirates to gain possession of
the vessel by throwing stinkpots
and fire crackers on board of her
made resistance fruitless. Sin
gularly enough, the pirates con
tented themselves with robbery
and a little rough usage of the
barks crew.
Pacific Xorlhircst ItiTcrs and Lakes
The Columbia river is said to'
carry off a volume of water equal
j to that of the Mississippi. Though;
not so wide, the current is more
rapid. The channel is of great
average depth. This river may be
said to be in Washington territory.
Though for three hundred and
fifty miles from the sea to Wallula
it is the boundary line, from the
latter point it meanders northward
through Washington territory, a
distance of nearly 500 miles to the
British line. After its passage
into foreign soil, the river returns
to the territory by way of Clarks
fork, and meanders nearly
south to lake Pen d'Oreille,
a distance of over one hundred
miles. The other great fork,
Lewis or Snake river, comes in at
Ainsworth, the present terminus
of the Northern Pacific going
cast. This fork is a large and im
portant river. Most of its great
waters arc also in Washington
territory. But there is still an
other branch of the Columbia,
along which the Northern Pacific
will be running at some time the
Yakima, the valley of which con
tains lands of superior grain and
produce raising qualities. This
branch starts in the Cascade moun
tains and near the waters of Pugct
sound, and runs southeasterly in
eastern Washington. Many of
these streams are fed by the moun
tain snows and for the most of the
year afford cold and pure water.
Though small by comparison they
are navigable for small steamboats.
In the old settlements the fine
grass and farming lands along
their margin have long since
been occupied. The explorer
will find, however, many fine
lands in the back country
along streams of similar kind.
Among the attractions of our
Northwestern territories are the
lake regions. The lakes are num
erous, many of them large, notably
Pen d'Oreille, about thirty miles
long north and south, surrounded
by good lands and pine timber.
The Northern Pacific wiil soon be
finished to this point and afford an
outlet westward. Near lake Cceur
dAlene, some forty miles from
Pen d'Oreille, is the old mission
and C(eur d'Alene reservation.
Here is a beautiful country. The
northern waters of Cieur d'Alene
aie some seven miles from the
line of the Northern Pacific.
Lake-Chelan, one hundred and
fifty miles west from Pen d'Oreille
and two hundred miles north of
Walla-walla by way of the Colum
bia river, is forty miles in length,
and situated in Stevens county,
Washington territory. Back of
Seattle, and but a short distance
from it is lake Wsishington, twen
ty or more miles in length. Near
Steilacoom, in Pierce county, are a
chain of lakes, one quite large and
a curiosit. American lake lias
no visible outlet, is the receptacle
of several streams and never
overflows its banks. It is likely
the source of many fine springs
pouring out through the hills far
and near. Those who are partial
to settlement near lake scenery
can be accommodated in the
Pacific northwest.
