'I he steamer passed up the water front of the city nearly to Ross island and then tuniint; start ed for the mouth of the Willamet. She ran under a good head of steam, but not to her highest capacity, and reached the Columbia and sighted Vancouver in just fifty minutes, being a distance of 121 miles. On the return trip the stonier let heielf out a link or two and made the run in forty-nine minutes despite a strong hortd wind. With proper Iwdlast on board, the Fleetwood will make fifteen miles iver hour easily. The steamer runs ery prettily, and all who were on board were pleased with the trip. The Fleetwood is lir feet long, with 111 feet width of. beam. Her engines were made at Honeyntans foundry, and are 10-inch stroke. There are two cabins, both elegantly ujmohtfer- i od, and everything about the boat is arranged with regard to economy and utility. The steamer has a carry ing capacity for 25G passengers, and can carry fifty tons of freight. The Fleetwood will run to the Cascades, where she will connect with the Gold Dust for The Dalles. Capt, V. 15. I Scott will have command. Mr. G. Uox will be purser, and lleury Drake, engineer. We predict a successful career for the Fleetwood. The Hay ward and the Fleetwood started out for a race from the Asto ria dock yesterday morning at six o'clock, followed by the government steamer Lincoln, all for Portland. Ladies on Tillamook Hock. Gillespie and Mr. J. A. Riperton has taken the general agency for the sale of the productions of the Astoria boot and shoe factory. Mr. C. A. McGuncs horse Rec ord was taken to Portland yestorday by his trainer Johnny Wall, to pre pare for the races July 2Gth. If a good roport follows the present exploration in the Nehalem, j tho building of the railroad from! Astoria will begin at once. We hope for the best Capt. Geo. J. Ainsworth was in the city last evening on business in connection with the proposed Oregon Ilailway and Navigation companys im provements at Astoria. Capt. Cleveland Rockwell has just taken from his easel a beautiful little water color entitled Early Morn ing in Rakers Ttiy. Its view is j towards fort Canby, with several bar- j bound vessels neatly portrayed. The remains of Mr. N. Ronton were consigned to the grave last even ing, attended by Reaver lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was a niombor. The )articulars of the drowning of Mr. Benson, and the recovery of the bodjT, have been published heretofore. A man by the name of John O'Connor died suddenly in a house of ill fame on Conoomly street yesterday morning. The body was taken in charge by Coroner Franklin who held an inquest. Friend of the family nfe invited to attend It is staled that the Oregon Rail way and Navigation oomjany will send a through lwmt to Ilwaoo on the Cth of July. Yesterday Mr. J. A Miss Eunice T. Perkins, and Mr. F. C. Norris of Thk Astokiax, and his sister, Miss Lizzie It. Norris, visited Tillamook rock, on board the Astoria, and landed upon the rock. This is the first time that ladies have landed at the rock, and the incident is worthy of much more than passing notice. They were congratulated by all, upon landing; and were particularly well received by Mr. Rowe and Mr. Holt. They speak in glowing terms of the J dolights of (he excursion, and inform us thai the published account of our visit to the rock, "in our imagination;" was substantially correct, with one material exception. Where- we say: None would wish lo go again, etc., the ladies exclaim. 0, we want lo go again!" Well, certainly, they deserve credit for their courage, and while we freely admit that we were timid about the matter, in refusing to accept the protler of a ride in the cage from the steamer to the rock, we will take their word for it that the sensation was de lightful, and when we go the next time will endeavor to profit by their experiences. Rut two pei sons can go at one time in ihc cage, so the ladie have been vindicated, and in Mr. Chitwoods case no doubt the wrong doers will be punished. Slander, the assassin creej up silently m the dark, and lays its ictim bleeding at its feet. Malice the natural accomplice of slan der, is yet more cowardly. Malice seeks to make innocent friendships the weapon of assassination. There is ik) protection so powerful, not even the brotherhood of man; that slander and malice cannot break it down, and there is no language that can ndc qatly picture the distress. There is no redress but in the strong arm and majesty of the law, and we hope and trust that Mr. Chitwmd, whom we have known for years, and known so well that when he says a statement is a lie it is such! we say: we hope he will push this matter just as far as iwssible. He is a poor man, but justice can be moled out to the poor as well as to the rich, else our forms of government and loasled libortics are but idle mockery. We should like to sec manhood triumph and feel that the voice of slander and malice can be silenced at least once forever. The Salem Statesman tells this for a fact: "Oh, 1 suppose he loves Sarah, and would be glad to marry her," she was saying to another woman I it. the postoftice corridor yesterday, "but I dunno." Isn't he a nice young man?" asked the other. ' Well, he's nice onough, but very reckless with his monev. At Christmas time he made us a present of a French clock for the parlor, and there's not one of ub in the house could speak a word of French. Ue might as well have pre sented us with a German thermometer or a Spanish umbrella. We had to trade it oil" for a barrel of molasses." Will reeehe orders at the store of 1. W. Not long since Mr. Quinn had a net and boat come in through the surf on North beach. He went over to re cover his property, and was con fronted with a bill of S150.
