"So Say TVc All of Us." ,-. ra, y . -. One of that class of writers con-1 tinually talking of what has been, takes the ground in a Portland print that Portland must and will continue to'-Jbo what it has bi?en. He says: Portland has the Willamet val ley to sustain her, and that is no small support. All the connec tions of the Oregon Railway and Navigation company with eastern Oregon and Washington will oenter their trade here. Until the Cascade branch of the Northern Pacific is completed, the trade of the northern counties of eastern "Washington must come here, aud whether they cease to come here will depend very much upon the inducements Portland merchants shall hold out to retain their trade. To suppose that Portland merchants Avill ever be so dull as to allow trade to leave them that they have once had, is to suppose that they will fail to deserve suc cess. Very many fine schemes have been permitted to sleep the sleep that knows no waking, from the very cause supposed in the con cluding portions of the above par agraph. A portion of the plan for Portlands future policy is thus eutlined: What Portland should do, it to study the inteiosts of the whole region and then work to help all outside interests. Complaint of selfishness is made against every metropolis, and our citizens should see to it that no such complaint shall be well founded. Let the people of the whole country see that the city realizes the needs of the country and identifies itself with those needs, and it will disarm jealousy and make-the city doubly strong. Portland has no natural rival for future pre-eminence, for the Columbia river is the natural highway for trade. I f it is least expensive to the producer to have his products taken direct from the Cascades to Astoria, why not? Portland merchants can control all avenues of trade, and while As toria cannot become a trade rival, it can be made a shipping point to the advantage of all. The future of Portland can be made whatever its citizens deserve and the growth of the region requires The field is broad; the future certain. A liberal policy and thoughtful pro vision for the needs of commerce, to tax products, lightly and encour age production as far as possible, will do much to ensure such a fu ture as our merchants hope for. Thankful for the crumb of com fort thrown to Atoria, we recog nize that there is some sense and reason in that argument. Nothing can be fairer; but as it seenib to be in continuation of Tin: As tokians argument of years past, we hope our friends at the me tropolis will read it with wisdom and act accordingly. 1 somebody were to come along and knock -lI .t ,r .1 Hfil it mas prop oi me w manioc vaiieyi out lrom under L'ortland, and let it fall into the lap of Astoria; and direct shipments from The Dalles to Astoria were to continue, it would be both a liberal and a thoughtful policy for the advance ment and encouragement of com merce and production of the country, as it would assuredly be the least expensive for the pro ducer of the valley, as well as the producer of eastern Oregon, to have his products taken direct to Astoria; why not? "So say we all of us." A hurricane struck near "Wells, on Monday. An old couple named Chaflee, were killed, sever al houses wrecked and several per sons severely hurt. A telegram states that a hun dred persons were killed and six injured by an earthquake which rCwcrillv" devastated a number of villages in the passalic of Van, Ar raenia, Turkey. The cyclone in Kansas was first seen near Ninnisab, on the Ar kansas river, and traveled rapidly in a northeasterly direction, pass ing Mulvane. During the storm large hail stones fell in immense quantities, and a hot wind pre vailed, making it difiieult to breathe, and turning the leaves of corn as black as dirt. After leav ing Mulvane the cyclone wheeled off in a southerly direction and struck Floral, a small town about four miles from Seeley. One per son was killed there, and two more or. "less dangerously wounded. Crops are much injured. S. Danzigcr, San Francisco clothing store, has the largest and best selected stock of clothing in the city. Also, gents furnishing goods, boots and shoes, trunks and valises, hats and caps. lu Bad Taste. r 1 11 1 r t x. l I c fenau always ieei mat u una been bad taste and unwise for one j faction of a great party to exult over another faction, as the half breeds of .New York did over the confirmation of Robertson; for uiciu uuuics i Liiui; wueii $ iiaurv lover the common enemy is only . J J possible oy unity ana narmony oi all factions. He is not a wise leader who seeks to antagonize these factions. - What - we may have said with respect to that faction of the press which holds only the offal of the party up to view, is true and we fully concur with this view from the San Jose Mercury, which says: The wholesale denunciation of Conkling and Piatt, bv republican journals, is not exactly the right way, it seems to us, to heal tnc breach iu the republican, ranks, or to gam votes for the partv. bonk ling represents the stalwatt wing of the part', that is, republicans who have been true to the colors of their party through good and evil report. There are hundreds of thousands of such republicans in the nation who admire the stal wart statesman from New York. Robertson, who had to be rewarded for the part he took in securing the nomination of Garfield, sup ported the Democratic nominee for the presidency no longer ago than 1S2. To" give over the New York custom-house with all its vast patronage, to Conk lings political enemy, and that too after exalting Blaine, another of Conklings enemies, to the premier ship; and to do this thing, too, knowing that it would humiliate Conkling; and doubtless for that very object, was about the rough est piece of business of which a republican president could be guilty. "What astonishes us s that republicans should stand in and defend the" president in this matter. The appointment of Rob ertson was not a necessary act on the part of the president, either to establish his supremacy or to re ward his friends. And certainly the removal of Merritt was not made in the interest of civil-service. This idea that the president can do no wrong, is stupendous nonsense. And we reiterate: The exultation of the friends of Gar field over the supposed annihil ation of Conkling is not wise, to say the least. Besides, they will be' apt to find Conkling a pretty lively sort of a corpse, before he retires to the seclusion of his po litical grave. - Mr. .fohn Rogers of the Central Mar ket, has made arrangements to keep all the finest Irish fish, etc., in their season.
