P) ASTOKIA. OREGON: TUESDAY JUNE 7. 1331 . C. IttCI,.lM liriilor. Business ts. Jaw Hone. If the churches and other relig ious and moral organizations dis like Mormonism as intensely as they say the' do, why don't they fisrht the peculiar institution with its own weapon? Mormonism is increased and maintained only by immigration, for, contrary to natu ral supposition. I'tnh families do not average more children than those of other territories, and the faith is not maintained with groin fervor by saints of the second and third generations. Eurojean ig norance and poverty form the mainstay of Mormonism. The thick-headed peasant may not be much excited by the alleged mis sionaries story of the spiritual g-lories of the new Canaan, but he more fully understands an offer of a free pass to I "tali and a farm for nothing; when he reaches the New Jerusalem. Many a man not an ignorant peasant would outwardly assent to any faith if he could, by doing so, get a homestead and free transportation to it. The facts being as above, why cannot the churches organize an unsec tarian colonization society, the agents of which shall follow Mor mon missionaries throughout Eu rope as closely as detectives arc supposed to follow other mischief makeis? Let the agents work just where the Mormons work, but instead of preaching any machine made gospel let them offer free homes to the poor, and education to the ignorant, all through the spirit of the gospel that is concen trated in the Golden Rule. Let them fight Mormonism not onby by offering equal material induce ments, but by opening the eyes of the ignorant to the reputation of Mormonism among respectable people throughout the world. The Mormon Missionary prefers to work in localities from which no one has ever emigrated to Ameri ca, for letters home from our foreign born citizens always severe ly injuie Mormon prophets. Opin ions of Moi monism, however, for general circulation, can be had in quantity from foreign born Ameri cans whom the- peasant can iden tify, and the endorsement that our government would give such an enterprise would have immense effect. Such an organization would have to be in competent business hands on this side of the Atlantic and prepared to complete the! European work by having its proteges placed upon homesteads worth having, or located in colo nies, but the land, as a rule, would cost them nothing. For, with the ! money expended in the conversion of one single Mohammedan to Christianity, a liuiubed ignorant, under-fed, tax-oppressed peasants might be placed where their chil dren would have enough to eat and wear, and live better in every way than their parents have lived. "With the money that it costs to convert a Jew a prosperous coun try could quickly be made out of a desolate valley in some western territory. such an enterprise! should every year use as much money as a prosperous missionary society; but if the churches were half as earnest in lighting Mor monism with cash as they now are in talking against it, there would be no lack of funds. Here is a glorious chance for opponents of Mormonism to prove their faith by their words. At Canton, Ohio, on Sunday, a vault in the cemetery was found broken open, that had not been opened for ..twenty-five years, and bones of corpses strewn all around. The supposed object of the dese cration was to o;et jewelry from dead bodies. John Jacob Astorand wife were in London for a few days on their way to the continent hist week. London weather continues exceed ing! v hot. The street clenninir: and watering' are utterly inade quate. The smallpox epidemic is increasing. There was a "-eneral exodus on Sunday. I Genoral Le Due has unbobomed himself in a sort of valedictory in terview in which he sets forth that we have fifty million consumers iu the country and each mouth de mands annualry forty-two pounds of sugar. His last little derange ment is caused by an attack of sorghum on the brain. Hurir, Governor Pitkin., of Colorado, offers a reward p'f 1,000 for Alli son, the leader., Jind 200 each for the balance rf a jrans: of outlaws in renting Conejos county. An attempt of the audacious, impudent, insolent class of poli ticians to procure the removal of Second-assistant Treasurer French on the irround that he lacks knowledge of customs laws, rules and regulations, and the general duties of his office pertaining to customs matters, ought to be nipped in the bud. On Monday night the tow boat Mastick, of Port Discovery, was run into by the English steam tug G nippier, near Crescent bay, straits of Fuca, and was seriously injured. It is reported that the (i nippier was towing a ship without lights, and had ihe Mastick Jnot slowed when she perceived the American boat, would paobably have gone to the bottom. The London Times says the opinion is growing that Great Ijritian should not attempt to bar gain with Fninceabouta new com mercial treaty, but should drop the negotiations unless it is dis tinctly understood that any change in the existing treaty shall be more, rather than less, inclined to free trade. Saturdays vote at Albany shows au unchanged front, but Mr. Conkiing savs his chances were never better. One of the stalwarts who has been managing the con test said to a Times reperter: "All the money in Xew York will not defeat Conkling." I know of three half-breeds who are willing to go over to him when their votes will elect him, and we have only to secure six more votes to make our success assured. 1 believe that we will secure those six votes dur ing the coining week, and if we do you will see a stampede for Conk ling which will astonish vou.'
