Walla-walla streets are so bad that horses will have to bo employed to draw the steam fire engine in case of fire, at an expense- of 1,200 per annum, to bo raised by prirate sub scriptions. Another one of those fishes that burrow in the sands at high tide to spawn, was brought to the city yester day by Capt. Munson, and will be prepared for transmission to Prof. Baird at the Smithsonian institute, Washington. The fire alarm yesterday was oc casioned by sparks catching on the roof of Frank Fabers ice cream saloon, and burning through the front. The alarm drew the entire department out, but a few buckets full of water squelched the flames. Damages slight. The Steamer Gen. Canby got caugbt at low tide in Bakers bay yesterday, and could not get out in time to complete her trip. The tug Mary Taylor made her afternoon trip for her. When the extension is made to the Ilwaco dock such incidents will not be heard of. Mr. Fred Gere, manager at Hills varieties, is in receipt of a letter from The Dalles announcing the death of John Coyne. He was killed by being run over by a train on the railway. A painter was working in the glass con servatory of Mr. Frank Dekum, whiie the sun was at its hight. The con centrated rays through tho glass made it so hot tho mau was overcome with genuine sunstroke and waa immediate ly taken to his home. At last ac counts he was recovering and no seri ous results are anticipated. H;ro 's a keerd for you. A Sau Francisco paper has struck the follow ing purely local aud highly original method of boosting the fish ef a California firm: "The Sacrautoato river salmon, packed by King, Mrse & Co., i.s acknowledged by epicures to have that delicate flaror and fiaeaess of grain that is not found in the fish that frequent tho waters pf the Co lumbia river, Oregon. These fish being packed in the cold climate of San Francisco, are far superior to the salmon packed in the hot and humid atmosphere of the Sacramento rivor." 1 We can tell our cotemporary this: that the delicate flavor and fiuonoss of our sturgeon are preferable to his salmon. The cold climate of San Francisco is a good joke. " i Fire-brick and fire-clay in lots to I suit at M. C. Crosbv's. Use Nicholas' Balm of Gil cad oil, for sore or chapped, hands. Max.
