OJ gftc Qnihl staimx. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY MAY 8, 1881 . C. IRELAND ... i:Utor. Froude writes to the London Times that in 1871 Carlyle gave .him the manuscript of his reminis cences, with instructions attached thereto. Froude expressed the opinion that a greater part .df the reminiscences should be published as it was. Carlyle replied that be left the matter to Froude. He accepted the trust only out of re gard for Carlyle, and two years ago surrendered it lo Carlyle niece. He should he very loth to give further explanation. On a certain day, years ago, two men and an Indian 'squaw arrived at a swamp spot with a wagon. They went to work and Muck up a rude shanty. A man snot a woodchuck and the squaw skinned and cooked it. They ate the woodchuck, ihen they all crawled into the shanty and went to sleep. These proceedings, ridiculous as they may seem, are to be cele brated in grand style with much braying of trumpets, and beating of drums. Much gunpowder is to be fired and several men blown up to celebrate the shn-ing of the woodchuck. In the proceedings of those two men and that squaw consisted the founding of Chicago. One of the great mineral won ders of the world is the iron moun tain in the stale of Duration. -The mountain is nearly two miles in length and one mile wide, and about TOO feet high. About the surface, uncovered and in bight, is shown about 00,000,0(10 tons of pure ore ready to be shoveled or rolled without anv cost of niiiiinjr, into the furnaces at its base. Much of this ore ranges from seventy to ninety per cent, and some is car ried directly to the forge. It works very kindly, and there is every reason to believe ores of such superiority, when subject to all our modern improvements in iron working, will produce iron and steel unsurpassed anywhere in the world. The grain movement down the Mississippi from St. Louis to New Orleans shows an incresising vol ume. Last week three tows went down having fifteen barges in all, and carrying an aggregate of 71G, 000 bushels of grain. In all there have been o.730,000 bushels of bulk -grain shipped from St. Louis by river since tin; opening of navigation February 10th, which is 570-OOt) bushel, more than had been shipped at this date last year, although navigation was resumed just six weeks sooner in 1SS0. Everything indicates that 1)3' the time the river has been open as long this year as last year, shipments will be double what they had been last year. The Pacific Northwest lias a reputation in other parts of the world for being an exceedingly wet region, where rain falls about two-thirds of the time and the people are compelled to wear gum boots and oil-km clothing. 13ut for the last month or so, while the country east of the liockies has been visited by snow storms, wind storms, floods, etc., this section has experienced the most beautiful spring weather, exceedingly pleas ant, with just enough rain to make vegetation grow and flourish as it does only in Oregon and the ad joining regions. We ought to hear but little about Oregon rains and floods and bad weather after this season. Don' you think so? John Grossley & Son, of Eng land, have instituted a. suit against the city of ?ev Orleans, in the United States Circuit court, for the sum of $43G,7S2 50, being the amount of drainage warrants held by them. One hundred and seven ty thousand dollars of these war rants were issued by the city as part of $3,000,000 purchase price paid by the city for the rights and property of the Mexican Gulf and Ship Canal company, of which the petitioners are successors, and the remainder of the warrants "were issued for work alleged to have been performed by said company. The petitioners allege that the city has made no efforts to collect the drainage tax levied to pay these warrants; that there is S70,000 of this tax now due, and they ask for such order in relation to this mat ter as the court may see fit to issue,. nawuaMtikaNfj Flushes from tlio Wires. Br MAIL, A3tt TELEGRAPH Washington news is unimport ant Parties in Cincinnati have or ganized to secure the right to adopt the cable system such as is in use in San Francisco street cars. Miss Minnie Pinnes, of Greeley, Colorado, has published a card ac cepting the challenge of Miss M. IS. Williams, of England, to a twenty mile race for 200 a side. News from the TrausY.il tends to increase fear that the natives will attack the Boers. When the British withdiew, :t number of Cafire chiefs formed a league against the Boers. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe and the Chicago, Texas and Mexican Central railroads have perfected arrangements for joint connection with the St. Louis and San Francisco at Dallas and Paris. Some malicious scoundrel cut the dyke at Madison levee St. Louis, on Frida-, and the water is pouring in an opening fifty feet wide. Fifteen thousand acres will be overflowed, all fine farming land. What's Beeehcr trying to get through him now? In a lecture last Friday night speaking of the Chinese treaty, he is reported to have said: That the boasted institution and policy of America were a sham if its people were not willing lo have Chinese or any other people as citizens. Said he: 'We will assimilate all people who come to us. When a lion eats an ox the lion does not turn into an ox, but the ox turns into a lion. So an emigrant comes to our common schools, which are the stomach of the country, and he and his children are assimilated by our people As a mild, but effectual laxative, as a safe but sure tunic, blood purifier and general strengthened use King of the Blood.
