Anthony was in -New York recently looking ex ceedingly well, though somewhat fatigued from the long winter of hard work which she has bestowed upon the history of woman suff rage in this country, which she and Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with the assistance of Mrs. Matilda Joslyn Gage, are busy in compil ing. There are no other women in this country who could do this work so well, who have stood from first to last so persistently and fearlessly in the breach, ns these; and no others to whom the honor in New York state .so truly be longs of having rid women of their most flagrant legal disabilities in the ownership of property and children. Whatever individual opinion may be in regard to the right to vote, every one must ad mit the courage, the steadfastness, the unflinching heroism with which they have lived down all attacks, and still kept to their self-imposed work. The two volumes will be illustrated with steel engravings, two of which are excellent port raits of Misti Anthony and Mrs. Ernestine L. Hose, a Polish lady, well remembeied in the active work for women of twenty to twenty-five years ago, but lately of England. The dedication is to Che prominent women workers in the cauce, now deceased. The state department is "hurry- iug up" at a snails pace in consid eration of the question of Mormon . immigration with a view to check and diminish the influx of deluded female converts. Mr. "Whitelaw Keid already owned a very fine house, double the usual width, with a magnifi cent music room, on the corner of Thirty-sixth street and Lexington avenue; but this will probably be exchanged shortly for a residence farther up town and upon one of the more fashionable thorough fares. His present neighborhood is eminently respectable, but not fashionable. At the opposite cor ner from him resides Secretary McCullough; straight through the block, on Park avenue. J)r. J. G. Holland and Mr. "Win. Alien But ler, the author of Miss Flora Mc Flimseys pitiful appeal; and in near proximity theScribners, May or Grace and Mr. John Kelly. Whenever Kate Claxton is iien tioned immediately comes to the mind remembrances of the terrible holocaust at the Brooklyn theater in December, 1S70, and the burn ing of the Southern hotel, St. Louis, later. On the 17th ult., Miss Claxton arrived in Denver and stopped at the Grand Central hotel. Immediately fears of the destruction of the house by fire were present in all minds, and extra precautions were taken against it. Despite these precau tions, however, a fire did occur in the hotel a few hours after Miss Claxtons- arrival. It broke out in a room adjoining the one assigned to Miss Claxton, filling the entire house with a volume of smoke and creating extraordinary excitement. The fire brigade of the hotel were quickly on the spot, and extin guished the incipient conflagration before any great damage had been done, and the panic was allayed. People "generally, and emi grants in particuiar, who were recently reported to be preparing to join the proposed American col ony in the Mexican state of Sono ra, will be interested in hearing that the land grant on which they propose to settle is occupied by In dians of powerful physical build, brave and warlike temper, and with resolute disposition to hold their domain bv force of arms if necessary, against all comers. The Mexican government in granting fifty leagues of fruitful territory to two residents of California, Sam uel Brannan and Manuel Castro, partly in liquidation of a claim and partly for the purpose of founding a colony, did not grant possession of the territory, 'as well; for the very good reason that it nevei had it and is not likely to get it for some time to come. :onora is a beautiful, rich and fertile territory, but whoever proposes to settle it must fight for existence, and is pretty sure to.have his hands full. A Dive from the Clifc John Muir, the naturalist of the Sierra, writing of tho vild sheep of the Sierra and of their well authenticated habit of diving from precipices and alighting on their horns, relates the following anec dote in Scribner for May: At the base of sheep rock, one of the winter strongholds of the Shasta flocks, there lives a stock- raiser who has the advantage of observing the movements of wild sheep every winter; and, in the course of a conversation with "him on the subject of their diving habits, he pointed to the front of a lava headland about a hundred and fifty feet high, which is only eight or ten degrees out of the perpendicular. "There," said he, "I followed a band of them fellows to the back of that rock yonder, and expected to capture them all, for I thought I had a dead thing on them. 1 got behind them on a narrow bench that runs along the face of the wall near the top, and comes to an end where they couldn't get away without falling and being killed; but they jumped off, and landed all right, as if that were the regular thing with them." "What!" said I, "jumped a hun dred and fiftv feet! Did you see them do it?" "No," he replied, "I didn't see them going down, for I was behind them; but I saw them go off over the brink, and then I went below and found their tracks where they struck on the loose debris at the bottom. They sailed right off, and landed on their feet right side up. That's the kind of animal they is beats anything else that goes on four legs." .UARUIED.
