It is suggested that there ought
to be a daily steamer from Astoria to
Ilwaco during the Summering Season.
We refer the suggestion to the Ilwaco
Steam Navigation company, presum
ing that if there is business in that
direction to justify the enterprise they
will perforin the service. -
A dispatch from Mr. J. W. Crow
to The Astokiax informs us that Mr.
Minaker reports having found Mr.
Burnside'a boat yesterday afternoon
with floats in it, anchored in a small
slough between Knappa and his place,
but could find nothing of the old
gentleman. It is thought that he
must be somewhere in the vicinity,
probably dead.
A little steamer to run on the
Ohehalis river has just been implied,
and will commence as soon as she
passes inspection. Several attempts
have heretofore been made to run
steamers on that river, but business
would not justify their remaining, but
as the country tributary has been
rapidly settled up of late, the new
candidate may meet with better suc
cis. We hope so.

Another Objection on the Boat Light
Question.
Fisherman m yesterdays Astomax
forgot to mention one of Hie most im
portant of all objections to th;s foolish
regulation. A light constantly burn

darkness so intense that it becomes
almost an utter impossibility for the
fishermen to see m what direction he
is sailing. This objection alone ren
ders the regulation dangerous, and wo
heartily trust that the outrageous law
may not be enforced.

Iiiterary Chit-Chat
The Youth's Companion has become
one of the most widely circulated and
popular publications of America,
If you want something nice for your
boys, send for Golden Days. Address
James Elverson, south-west corner
Eighth and Locust streets, Philadel

Harper's last Weekly and Bazar
have sermons in pictures which do
more than all that lias been written
upon the topics of which they treat.
Instance the streets of Paris and New
York; in jail as a witness and out of
jail as a thief; and that beautiful illus
tration, the Bend of Sympathy be
tween the United States and Russia.
We cannot describe it. It is worthy
of a place upon the walls of any man'a
library.
Good society is, according to their
different lights, the aim of every rank;
and in one little room n man may be
come surrounded with the noblest
minds of those who have taken kingly
rank in the empire, of intellect. For
him Shakespeare wrote, Milton sung,
and Bacon and Newton toiled. The
results of their labors lie close to his
hand, and he has but to resign himself
to their influence, and earthly trouble
and care will be soothed by their siren
voices.
Kate Greenaway's painting, prom.
ised for the January frontispiece of I
Babyland, arrived from London jn
time for March. '-Let us make the
songs of a. nation and I enro not who
make its laws." was an inspired utter-J
ance. An American senator said in
one of the fiery speeches he delivered
upon the war, that Tho Star-spangled j

more to send men to battle than forty
years of legislation. And so it is with
literature. Start the babies with such
reading as comes from the house of D.
Lothrop and company, Pern- Mason
and company, James Elverson and
others of such class, and when the
child becomes a youth and the youth
a man, that man will be a useful mem
ber of society, and will assist to sup
press the vile publications and prints

and the Rev. A. T. Perkins, rector of
Grace church parish Astoria, having
been invited to preach a sermon

thus neglect his own Parish on an

when the sermon will be delivered.
