C2J glxc JDnnu-storXnxu ASTORIA- OREGON: !EHURSDAY APRIL 7, 18S1 I.C.IUELAND. .editor. 3Kr. Hillings' Dispatch. The Tacoma Ledger prints the following telegram from the Presi dent of the Northern Pacific railroad company, to the Gen eral superintendent. Gen. J. "W. Sprague: New York, March 31. I can jiot keep track of all the statements in the newspapers. There is no mistaking the purpose of those -who are tryinir to got control of the Northern Pacific. It is to arrest its construction west of "VVallula, and make it tributary to the Oregon Railway and Naviga tion company. Fidelity to the charter as well as to the interests of the Pacific coast and the interest of the company, all require the road to go to Puget sound. Any scheme to prevent its going there J think will not succeed. Fkedekick. Billing s President. Hillings Answered. Mr. Viilard, president of the Oregon Railway and Navigation company, sends the Oregonian, under date of April st, the fol lowing statement of the relations between the Oregon Railway and Navigation company and the Northern Pacific. He says: "I arn advised that you have published a dispatch from President Billings to General Sprague, stating, among other things, that the object of myself and friends in obtaining control of the Northern Pacific, is to stop its construction west of "Wailula, in order to make it tribu tary exclusively to the Oregon Railway and Navigation company. I pronounce this allegation un qualifiedly false, and defy Presi dent Billings to produce the evi dence. Myself and friends own and control over 30,000,000 of Northern Pacific common and pre ferred stock, representing an in vestment of 10,000,000, which we propose to make permanent. It is absurd and ridiculous to assert that wi should deliberately pro- ' ceed to make this investment un productive by preventing the de velopment of the Northern Pacific enterprise within the proposed limits. Our interests in the North ern Pacific represent five times the monev value of our holding of Oregon Railway and Navigation company stock. The Oregon Rail way and Navigation company itself does not own a single share of Northern Pacific stock. You may publish this over m' signa ture. " H. Villakd. The Dead Commander. The liglit-liouse steamer Man aanita, with the body of the late Commander C. J. McDougal, ivho was drowned off cape Mendocino March 28th was detained at Hum boldt by rough weather, but has probably reached San Francisco before this. The body will be trans ferred to Mare island, where it will be interred with appropriate cere mouies. Details of the death of Commander McDougal report that, being at cape Mendiocino Sunday night, Captain McDougal decided to land on the following morning i everything was favorable. At half-past seven o'clock on Monday morning the boat was lowered and Captain McDougal, Captain Kortz, Mr. Butler, of the Argonaut, and six seamen started for the shore. The boat carried a surf-line, which -was anchored outside the outer line of breakers. When between the outer and inner line an extra and unexpected sea swamped the boat, throwing all the occupants out. Five of them, who clung to the boat, reached the shore in safety. Captain McDougal, when last seen, was within thirty yards of the beach, where he went down for the last time before aid from the shore could reach him. Captain Xortz, after being in the water forty-five minutes, reached the shore in an unconscious condition, and was taken to the Ocean house, where by prompt and skillful at tention he was resuscitated. Mr. Butler and Gus. Peterson, a bailor, were seen but once after the boat swamped. Their bodies had not been recovered at last accounts. Tlie Borus Lust. It is now time for Mr. J. Lusk, of Oakland, to step in and aid us in the effort to ferret the fraud of A. Lusk & Co. The following dis patch from Messrs. W. T. Coleman & Co. is self explaining: Enrrei: AsTem.vx: A.
